On vacation in Burlington, VT. The place we're staying near downtown has a beautiful Insignia HDTV, hooked to a DTA getting nothing but SD programming. So, naturally, I pulled out an antenna and decided to do something about it. Hooked my antenna up and scanned. You guys really aren't kidding, WVNY is nearly impossible to pull in. I'm using a Terk HDTVi and after 20 scans, I ended up using my spectrum analyzer to max out the signal by holding it in an awkward position in the center of the room with the VHF elements fully extended. It finally scanned in, but breaks up and is unwatchable no matter where I put it. I have yet to see a clean signal from WVNY.

Got every other station, including W25BT-D which almost always scans in but never seems to actually decode. So as long as I don't want to watch ABC, I'm in good shape, I guess.

44-2 really should be running a simulcast of WVNY.

Downtown Burlington is a tough spot for Mt. Mansfield stations, of all types. Even WEZF and WVPS radio aren't the best down there, which has always confused me since that is the COL. WVPS HD locks south of Barre and holds all the way to just before St. Albans in my car staying on I-89. However, get off and go down the hill (US 2) into downtown Burlington and it drops a lot. I guess what is what WOXR HD is for. Back to TV, WVNY is my strongest signal, and that's with the antenna pointing at Montreal. To be fair, all of the Mt. Mansfield signals show 65 to 70% and WVNY is steady at 75 or so it's not that much different. WCFE is semi-blocked due to a small ridge, but it is still fine in the 40s. I used to get a couple of the translators on analog, but not on digital. CBC Montreal varies from 30% to 50% depending on atmospheric conditions, but locks most of the time.

That's not what I'm seeing. Excellent signal on all UHFs with minimal trouble, WVNY a struggle. WVPS sounded great all the way here outside of some picket fencing (multipath).

That is good to hear about the other TV signals. I have never done OTA TV downtown but I have in the North End when my cousin lived there, which has LOS to everything. WVNY is definitely antenna dependent. I have had good luck getting VHF with mine, but I definitely know that people have trouble with WVNY, especially with indoor antennas. My friend's parents are cord-cutters and I gave them an old indoor antenna I had. LOS and about 10 miles from Mt. Mansfield, they get WVNY well, but it requires making sure the antenna is just so. I used the same antenna here, and WVNY would (sometimes) scan in, but rarely show enough picture to tell what was on.

I have always based my thinking that TV would be tough OTA downtown based on the static on the radio and the TVFool maps. Click image for larger version

Ah, I'm just north of Pearl, so I'm definitely outside that apparent void. I'm actually impressed with how well I've done getting WCFE at the same time as the other broadcasters given its location in the opposite direction.

You bring an antenna and spectrum analyzer on vacation. Now that's dedication! My kind of guy.

Anyone else notice the choppyness of HD syndicated programming on WVNY and WFFF? It's as if they're running it off a laptop that can't process every frame fast enough. When it's network programming it's fine.

I've had a tiny indoor antenna in my travel bag to Vermont and to the Portland, ME area before. My last attempt was in Brattleboro on May 28th. However, the TV in the room was an old Panasonic CRT "tube" TV from 2000. Obviously, anything over the air was out! Besides, likely due to viewing habits and Keene, NH being their sister city, Brattleboro and Windham County get lumped into the Boston/Worcester DMA. I figured a current TV would get WVTA-TV (PBS) channel 41 of Windsor and WEKW-TV (PBS) channel 52 of Keene, NH. Of course Keene could get hampered by Mount Wantastiquet on the NH side of the Connecticut River. I then though maybe WNNE-TV (NBC) channel 31 of W.R.J. could be picked up, but it's still ~60 miles north of downtown Brattleboro (the hotel/motel I was in was in the town's north end, close to Exit 3 of I-91). I can't speak for Montpelier, Burlington or Plattsburgh, NY, since I've never been in any of those cities.

Yes, WVNY and WFFF are terrible. Choppy, soft, pixely. Even if you compare the network programming to the same shows on CTV/Global etc or another ABC/Fox affiliate and it's quite noticeable how bad they are. College football on WVNY is pixely and soft compared to WMUR/WCVB.

I have a question about WPTZ-TV and their sister station, WNNE-TV in White River Junction, VT:

Is anything local on WNNE at all? I stayed at the Super 8 along US Route 5 in W.R.J. recently, close to the junction of I-89 and I-91. Their cable lineup didn't actually look that bad. The cable channel card next to the TV listed cable 13 as "NBC".

All syndicated programming had the "5" bug in the corner from WPTZ. I was even able to see the New York Lottery Numbers and Win 4 drawing during Wheel Of Fortune. I can't speak for their news, as I watched some of the 11 PM news on WCAX-TV channel 3.

I found it strange that channels 4 (CBS), 5 (ABC) and 7 (NBC) from Boston were on the lineup. Even WMUR-TV channel 9 from Manchester was on the lineup. In other words...3 ABC stations!

WNNE no longer carries anything different than WPTZ. The news is the same, the lineup is the same, and they don't even try to pretend WNNE is local to WRJ anymore. I have WNNE on Directv and WPTZ OTA the only difference is the bug in the corner. I didn't know that WRJ carried the Boston locals on cable. Anything from Montreal? Any of the LP's in the area?

Windam Co VT gets all Boston locals, including NH, on Directv - well, at the moment 7 WHDH and 56 WLVI are in contract dispute - and all VT locals (not Plattsburgh, so no 57 WCFE or 5 WPTZ) and thus also has the same 3 ABC affiliates. People will say that WMUR and WCVB are the same, but their afternoon and late night lineups are different. I think cable in Windham Co has the same 3 ABC's AND the Albany DMA ABC from WCDC, which is a repeater in nearbyish Adams, MA.

Edit: I just saw that you saw the "5 WPTZ" bug - that is WPTZ. WNNE has the "31 WNNE" bug in the corner. I just switched to WNNE and am looking at it right now on the Meredith show. Like I said earlier, that is the only difference between the two. With Directv everyone in the Burlington DMA gets both WPTZ and WNNE as locals, 2 identical (except the bug!) NBC affiliates.

It makes one wonder what's the point of having WNNE-TV on the air? Do they still even have a local WRJ sales office or studio? I was told their prior sales office was at an American Legion Hall in town. That building must be gone, because I walked around that area on Wednesday afternoon/early evening (from WRJ village down South Main Street, then up Sykes Mountain Avenue its entire length) and didn't see the place! (I was last here in 1992 for a big BINGO tournament, held in that place. I had come up from central CT!)

The Super 8 cable definitely carried WBZ (cable 4), WCVB and WHDH (cable 7). WCAX on cable 3 looked to be a different format than WBZ. I had the TV set on a 4:3 ratio, since I knew I wasn't going to receive any HD.

Nothing from Montreal or any area low-power stations that I saw on this lineup. No local access stations either.

WPTZ-TV distinctly ID'ed as "WPTZ-TV - Plattsburgh | Burlington | Montreal."

Comcast in Brattleboro carries WCVB, WMUR and WCDC-TV (ABC) channel 19 of Adams, MA. It's a satellite station of WTEN-TV (ABC) channel 10 of Albany, NY. I wonder if it's like WNNE, as in nothing local about it? Western Massachusetts advertising, etc? (It's transmitter is on Mount Greylock in Berkshire County, the highest point in Massachusetts.)

It makes me wonder...had the hotel TV not had it's antenna TV tuner disabled (marked as "Hospitality TV" near the cable input), what would my little indoor antenna I had snuck in my bag up from CT received besides maybe WNNE?

I have thought it would make sense for WNNE to become multiplexed, putting CW HD on 31-1, NBC HD on 31-2, and MeTV on 31-3. Basically, flip the -1 and -2 from WPTZ. That way, the CW would be on a primary channel and be on Directv and OTA viewers wouldn't lose anything. WNNE distinctly ID's as WNNE Hartford | Hanover.

Noteworthy addition to the recent WNNE/WPTZ conversation:

Beginning around the start of the Olympics, WPTZ/WNNE went through a rebranding. Both are now known as NBC 5, no longer News Channel 5. The bug in the corner on WPTZ and WNNE during the news is now always NBC 5 on both stations. After the Olympics, we’ll see what the bug during syndication will display. The only difference between them now is the top of the hour ID (see photo – WPTZ shows WPTZ Plattsburgh | Burlington |Montreal for their ID). The news is still SD, way too bright, and blurry.
