Not trying to cast a cloud or anything, but if you do the math, he needs $100k over two years to afford to switch frequencies (assuming WBQC gets a new frequency, which I'll bet is likely). Break that down to advertising income based on a 24-hour clock and he'd need about six dollars an hour more in revenue. That's it. I don't know exactly how much inventory he gets from the diginets, but casual viewing seems to indicate between 2 and 4 minutes per hour per diginet (not including SonLife and JTV. Going with 2, that's 8 minutes an hour, or 16 30-second avails. That would mean a rate hike of only 38 cents for a :30, 76 cents for a :60. If he can't raise rates that much, then there aren't enough people watching for advertisers to feel it's worth it.

Of course, I'm sure you're all frequenting WBQC's advertisers and telling them you saw their ads on Channel 25, right? Nothing works better and making a local advertiser feel as if he's getting his money's worth than direct feedback (a tactic employed by several radio stations I've worked for).

Of course, if you're fast-forwarding through all the commercials and not buying anything advertised, well...

It will be interesting to see if there's a higher demand for both hi-VHF and lo-VHF once ATSC 3.0 is rolled out since it uses OFDM instead of 8VSB.

It is very unfair not to compensate the low power channels for their changeover expenses while paying for the full power stations.
(Its discrimination!)
I think the FCC is underestimating the time its going to take considering our unpredictable weather.

Not really. Owners of low-power television stations knew the rules going in. Any number of things could have caused him to lose the license without compensation.

Perhaps Elliot could start a Fund Raising campaign both online and over the air on his station over the next year or two to try to raise the funds needed to keep Ch. 25 on the air? I would be happy to kick in a few bucks. Assuming that i stay in the Cincinnati area I would certainly continue to watch some of the shows on Ch. 20 it was going to stay on the air and that would also be the case with Ch. 25.

While I think a new assignment is likely, there's no point in raising money until it's a certainty. Still, like I said, an 80-cent a minute rate hike isn't that tough to do if he REALLY wants to save it.

He got the $14 million from the auction so $100k is nothing for him. But he's not going to throw it away, either. Obviously, it isn't worth it because he isn't going to spend the money.

With regard to VHF LPTV, it sucks. Virtually impossible to pick up without an outdoor antenna. But if you have an outdoor antenna, the picture is impressive.

Skip season is upon us. Dxing with a good TV tuner and outdoor antenna will yield excellent results like you've posted.

Dr. Don, you have no idea about TV, no one can sell out 100% of your inventory, that can't be do with a LPTV station. And I can't wait to pull the plugs on both stations, and enjoy the beach somewhere. And all you complainers will lose 16 program sources, you just might have to bite the bullet and get cable. Dr. Don I will send you a post card, if I can afford it.
For those you you that have supported my stations for over 25 year, I have done the best I could, and I thank you from the bottom of my heart.

Hey, Elliot,

There IS life after TV.

I retired on 30-Jul-15 and have been enjoying the quiet ever since.

I have even learned to refer to Local 12 in the 3rd person; they & them instead of we & us.

Come on in. The water's fine.

73,

Thanks for the update. After installing a new antenna and doing a scan I was not able to find the channel. Thought I had a problem with my pre amp over power your signal. Now I know that is not the problem.

Aren't they on the same tower as WXIX Ch 19? They are strong as usual.

Question about Ch. 26 in Dayton. It appears that with the Repack it will be going off the air. That being the case, which channel or channels might pick up their programs? Will the Dayton Dragons games still air?

Will stations like WDTN spin up this new subchannel as 26.1 or make it a 2.x? The call sign WBDT is going away in any case since it's assigned to the frequency.

Good question. If Ch. 26 is going to go Dark then I would suspect that the sub channels will be listed as Ch. 2.

It doesn't have to. You can use 2 different PSIP numbers. So lets say WDTN adds CW on their RF station while keeping the existing channels. They can do PSIP as such
2-1 WDTN HD
26-1 CW HD
2-2 Escape
2-3 Justice

Its being done elsewhere where there are 2 different PSIP's off one RF number. The clusterf**k in Springfield, Missouri is a great example due to a company owning 2 stations and moving programming around
KYTV is
3-1 NBC
33-1 ABC
33-2 CW SD
http://www.rabbitears.info/market.ph...&callsign=kytv

sister station KYCW-LD is
3-2 WXNation
25-1 CW HD
25-3 Cozi
33-3 AntennaTV

It appears that this kind of arrangement will become more common when the frequency repacking occurs. (Which will be two years from now for the Cincinnati market.) It apparently will become the norm when signals start to switch over to ATSC 3.0 and markets have to support both ATSC 3.0 and ASTC 1.0 simultaneously for a several years. (5-10 years... maybe??? Who knows at this point?)

Once nice thing about both ATSC standards is that sub channels can be moved around like this. It'll be interesting to watch how this is done over the next decade or so with ATSC 3.0. One possible scenario involving WCET and WPTO (since they have the same owner) could look like this:

WCET - using ASTC 1.0
  • 14.1 (1080i)
  • 48.1 (1080i)
  • Perhaps one or two additional 480i sub channels.

WPTO - using ATSC 3.0
  • 14.1 (at least 1080i, perhaps 1080p or even 4K?)
  • 48.1 (at least 1080i, perhaps 1080p or even 4K?)
  • As many additional sub channels as they can fit.

ATSC 1.0 tuners would be missing sub channels. ATSC 3.0 tuners would see everything and when available in higher quality than is possible today.

P.S. Anyone want to take bets when an ATSC 3.0 broadcast of the Super Bowl in 4K will happen in Cincinnati?
