Is it just me or is their no Fox 7 HD sports today? Just limited to Fox 7 or is it Fox in general?

Yeah, that happens a lot on the local channels. Also most of them go to SD when they have to insert weather warnings.

I really wonder why local stations even exist. It would not be hard at all to hook up all the OTA towers to a single satellite feed controlled by the networks. And they could allow local ad slots to be fed in, just like the cable-only channels do.

But the FCC keeps broadcast and cable in separate domains. How hard would it be for the local cable franchise to feed an OTA antenna from their satellite downlink and put the broadcast stations out of business at least for the network feeds?

Another way for this to happen is for networks to go cable only. ABC, NBC, Fox, and CBS would probably love to get out from under their broadcast station hassles.

There was a huge outcry with the switch to digital (government getting involved and delaying the change). Can you imagine what would happen if you had to tell all the OTA only people you MUST subscribe to a pay service to get the major networks....cable theft would increase, for sure.

no, I saying how easy it would be for cable franchises to take their network feeds from sat downlinks, and uplink them through an OTA antenna farm. This would be no cost to the OTA audience, and cut out the middleman (the local stations).

I know this is utopian thinking because the local broadcasters have a huge financial stake in maintaining the status quo.

Another example of my questioning is: why do we have local car dealers? Why are the manufacturers not allowed (by law) to sell directly to the public? This is essentially a tax on the consumer which lines the pockets of fatcat car dealers.

Again this is utopian because there is a huge number of dollars involved and a huge desire to maintain that from the car dealers across the country.

Freakin dumb bleeps have done it AGAIN. The entire halftime show, and now the second half of the Saints game, is on the SD feed. I am OTA so it's not the cable network.

Who do I call to wake someone up?

update their web page says to email engineering@fox7.com for HD problems. So I did. We'll see.

OH it just got flipped back as I was typing!

Another user error issue. With Win7 I managed to merge 31.1 with another 31.1 that was tuned to nothing. Technically a software bug + user error.

I noticed this too. BTW how is your FOX 7 signal? Mine has been pretty ugly. My system shows good signal strength, say in the 80's then out of nowhere it will drop to 0 and back up again.

I was thinking FOX was maybe doing some maintenance on the system.

I recently went from SAT to OTA due to cost and better quality PQ of OTA signal. I've actually been using OTA for several years now. I'm wondering if they are messing with OTA to encourage people to go back to cable/SAT.

Ummm....broadcasters are messing with OTA inorder to encourage people to go to a distribution system that means more competition for them? I don't think so! What we're probably seeing here is more of the engineering skills of a Fox station that's starved for capital.

I'm not an expert but it appears to me that broadcasters get some sort of compensation for being rebroadcast via alternate providers.

Isn't this why FOX is threatening to pull out of DISH Network?
FOX Dish hardball

I don't understand why FOX doesn't just rely on their commercial revenue. Why do they think they should get additional revenue for being rebroadcast? Seems to me they should get more money from advertisers this way because they are increasing their coverage.

I don't get cable and I don't get the broadcasters...Here's some decent info. Guess this is why the fee mess exists.

Regards,

Mike

While I don't think they're doing it (it they are doing anything ) drive people to cable/DBS/U-verse it would mean more dollars for KTBC since they get retransmission fees.

Antenna for channel 7. What are you guys using? I've been using a Clearstream 2 which is technically a UHF antenna, but I'm close enough that I can get reception.

Seems something has changed that's made the antenna finicky. Things are good, then all the sudden, a day later, the signal is a mess. I'm planning on adding a VHF, in serial to the UHF.

Will this work?

EDIT: Found a thread describing a combiner, thus it can be done. Now I just have to try it out.

Regards,

Mike

It was on a couple of months back, with some indie movies. But I haven't seen it lately. But then, I'm at Steck and MoPac, not exactly in its prime territory.

I asked because they just filed a covering app (meaning it should actually be on the air) yesterday, and I believe are supposed to be the RTV affiliate for Austin, for those who miss RTV.

Also, SiliconDust shows it as on the air, but isn't providing images of it for some reason. http://www.silicondust.com/hdhomerun...lineup_2896634

The local stations, at least here in Austin, don't see a dime. It's the corporation that collects the money and I know for sure that in one case in particular, those funds are not being reinvested locally.

NO station, or station group, is actually "encouraging" people to go to cable. In fact, the stations are even now fighting FCC proposals that would cut back the broadcast spectrum and award that territory to mobile Internet services.

I also noticed KVAT broadcasting on 17.1,2,3,4. Last time that channel was on, their website kvat17.com showed them as an RTV affiliate but the programming schedule didn't match what they were showing.

As far as OTA, I hope it doesn't go away anytime soon. There was an article in Wired a few months ago about how to go about cutting from cable, and getting a good OTA antenna was one recommendation.

Folks...I have finally had it with DirecTV and it's continual broken promises of various HD channels, Tivo-based receivers, and whole-home DVR service that doesn't work properly.

I'm considering switching to Dish. I was wondering if anyone out there could recommend a local installer and if someone might have a HD Dish system with current model DVRs that I might view, preferably one working with OTA reception here in Austin.

If any of you are resellers, I'd love to talk to you. I can be contacted directly at mikewantsdish@softhome.net . And yes, this is the ONLY thing I will ever use that email for!

Many thanks to anyone who can help.

Ok, I am at a loss here so I am trying here for advice. About a month ago after working great for over a year and a half my OTA signal started randomly dropping. Sometimes I will go for a few hours with no problem then it will drop for about 5 minutes and pop back to normal on almost all channels. The odd thing is at the same time my garage door opener remote stops working, my car alarm remote stops working and on my HD radio the signal drops as well.

This is very frustrating. Anyone have any ideas?

You are getting interference from something / someone. Without looking around your house, it would be hard to narrow down. See if it is at the same time everyday / week, etc. See if you can find a pattern.

Well sometimes its every 15 minutes and other times everything works fine for a couple of hours. It is driving me crazy, especially when I try to open my garage when I come home and it doesn't work.

I never had a problem until about a month ago. This morning it was doing it every 15 minutes so I powered off every braker except for one, that one powers the sockets to one room, where one TV and my computer is. So far no glitches for two hours. I am just going to slowly flip one on every hour and maybe find out what the heck is causing the issue.

It sure has to be some potent RFI/EMI to affect the wide frequency ranges that those different devices use. Checking an AM radio on a vacant channel during an "event" would reveal if it were being caused by any severe electrical arcing near you (and all the fire risks that might imply). Beyond that it might be some close by (licensed, legal, clean) transmitter with a low duty cycle or something dirty (harmonics, etc) that may or may not be legal/licensed. For instance here, noted the 3rd harmonic of a 27-MHz CBer would sometimes cause KCWX-DT-5 to quit decoding (but no others).
