FYI: Blazers/Timberwolves live on INHD at 5:00.

Must be blacked out due to coverage by Fox NW. Rats!

For the comcast users, does the 6412 also allow you to get terrestrial / OTA HD? Or do you need a separate box to get the OTA stuff

thanks,

No, you still need the OTA gear. The 6412 just translates what comes down the cable wire.

Though not strictly an HDTV note, I thought I'd share my latest Comcast horror story in hopes it won't happen to you.

In the Comcast rate increase letter was a flyer offering free HBO until Feb 14. (Call 1-866-717-1729 to get it.) I called and they set me up. However, in doing so, the sales agent accidentally deleted my internet service. I then spent more than an hour on the phone with the Internet side of Comcast trying to get service restored. In the end (after me pleading and escalating to superviser level), all they could do was send a "must fix" problem report to some other group, somewhere else in the country. The service was finally restored after three more hours (and another call from me), but it could have taken a couple of days.

It boggles my mind that an agent can accidentally delete a service (depriving them of $40 bucks or so a month) but it takes an act of god to get it back.

Anyway, this might be an isolated incident. But if you ask the TV side to adjust your service, and you also have cable modem service, I recommend reminding them of it. I wouldn't want anyone else to go through what I did.

Does anybody know what happens with a cable box hooked up to a 4:3 set.

My dad has a sony that takes only 480i, 480p and 1080i. If the cable box is set to 1080i what happens with the analog channels?

On the Motorola 6412 box, it gave me options on what I wanted for my HD output (1080i for me), and how I wanted 4:3 content to be displayed (480i or 480p I know are options, not sure if 1080i is). I selected 1080i and figure my XBR 960 can do the conversion better on it's own probably.

How do you find out what the 6412 is outputting, and how do you get to the menu to change settings?
Thanks in advance

turn off the 6412 and press the menu button
as Htwaits says and I quote:

HTWAITS wrote:
"You can get to the "6200's" setup menu by turning the TV on and selecting the STB input. With the STB OFF, press "menu" on the STB remote. Sometimes I have to press "menu" several times.

At some point a very crude menu will pop up. It looks like an old DOS screen.

I have mine set to 720p, 16x9, and 480i override off. You might want to try that.

Once you get the STB outputting 16x9 and 720p with 480i override off you should get all four aspect mode options using the "p. size" button.

I haven't tried any of the other "6200" setup options."

Can anyone help? Sometimes I like to use Closed Captions to watch TV. I can't find a switch on the remote so must go to the box and turn it off then get CC enabled and then restart. Then when I no longer want CC must do the process again. Am I missing a button on the remote? Thanks.

Trying to decide on a universal remote without going broke so I have been considering a Harmony remote. Seems like two models that may work for me, the 688 or the 768. They have different button formats with the 688 having more buttons some dedicated to DVRs.

I am hoping that someone out there will know how compatible one or the other remote would be with my equipement.

So here is my equipment:

Motorola 6412 HD PVR ala Comcast of course
Sammy HLP5674
Denon AVR 3805
Denon DVD 2910

In particular which if either Harmony will be "nice" to me when I want to program and playback recordings, find shows etc with the 6412?

thanks

I have not done it but there is a menu selection for close captioning. You access the menu(turn off, press menu). You left arrow until on the panel of the box it says something like "Ccos". It is a good idea to cycle thru all 4 setting and write down what they are in case you change one you don't want. If the TV is on the selections will show up there. Good luck.

You might try here, first: http://www.avsforum.com/avs-vb/showt...hreadid=417529

There are 106 posts and counting. There are other subjects in the Remote thread that talk about the various efficiencies, etc. of the different Harmony line. Try them out - lots of good feedback from users. The 680 is under our tree this year, delivered today by FedEx from surfremote.com.

Thanks Bob I will compare the 680 to the 688 on paper, at least and try to decide

NikeMan, Thanks. I do exactly as you describe to get CC but that seems like a lot of work that a simple button on a remote would solve. I guess there aren't many CC users so Comcast didn't make it a priority.

Calambert posted this suggestion over in the Portland OTA thread:

"You might try Myriad Home entertainment in West Linn. They are a small retailer/custom installer. They are listed in the forum's "installer database" found under services at the top of the page. It says the are cerified ISF.
503-722-8180.

Craig"

Looks like they wouldn't be too far from you. There are other suggestions in that thread as well. It's a good thread to monitor if you haven't been there. Good luck!

I just received this in my email from Comcast. Anyone know what it's all about:

Dear Comcast Customer,
We are always looking to serve our customers and continuing to improve our service offerings. Today, we wanted to make you aware of a planned network upgrade - scheduled to take place on Sunday December 19, 2004 between 1:00 a.m. and 4:00 p.m. Pacific Standard Time. This upgrade is designed to enable our High-Speed Internet customers to be among the first to access new information, entertainment and communication services. It also is designed to deliver additional network security and reliability, streamlined billing, and enhanced customer support and installations.
This marks our next step towards the delivery of the "connected home" - in which electronic devices and broadband services seamlessly work together to meet your lifestyle needs.
During this one day upgrade on Sunday December 19, 2004 between 1:00 a.m. and 4:00 p.m. Pacific Standard! Time, we are providing the following guidance to customers:
Do not unplug or restart your cable modem, router or home networking gateway, or reboot your computer during this time frame.
Doing so could potentially cause a service interruption until the network upgrade is complete on Sunday December 19, 2004 at 4:00 p.m. Pacific Standard Time. Please note: this guidance only pertains to modems, routers and gateways, and to your computer and we are not expecting any other changes with regards to the way you use your Internet service. (Note: If there is severe weather in your area, we ask you to make sure you follow normal precautions and turn off and unplug your computer).
We are available if you have any questions about this upgrade. You can reach us through our Online Customer Service Center, or if you would like to speak with a customer care representative, please contact us at 1-888-COMCAST.
Sincerely,
Comcast High-Speed Internet

I am in LO also and have NOT received any such email. I would be highly suspicious and would call Comcast to see if it is legit. there is just so much fraud !@#!#$% going down now via email. Asking you not to turn off your computer?? Call Comcast and let us know that they say!

Sounds like a scam!

mismatched, do you have Comcast Internet service?

I did receive the same e-mail and from the headers it appears to be legitimate.
While I haven't verified this with Comcast, I do know they are upgrading the modem provisioning system in old attbi areas that use the SAS registration to the Comcast system that requires you to run their CD if you have a reason to change modems or for new customers.

I would suspect that is the reason for the e-mail as we are an ex-attbi area.
If that's the case, the reason they are recommending not to turn off your modem, router, or computer is that you may lose internet connection until the upgrade is complete, since the system could see you as non-provisioned and block access.

Earl

edited to add... When in doubt, it's always a good idea to verify though.

Took about 20 minutes for the Rep to check, but he says it is legit and they are planning an upgrade during that timeframe

Well, it' not even the 19th and things are getting interesting. My Comcast digital phone service has been down for over 3 hours, and the QAM tuner on my TV is now picking up KATU, KGW and FOX on 2-1, 8-1 and 12-1 instead of the 91-2, 91-7 and 76-3 they were on yesterday.

I wonder what tomorrow will bring?

Well, I guess the upgrade is finished. I don't notice any difference. I did a speed test before and after... no difference. Anyone else notice anything?

I received the Comcast email and now that the time has passed, I cannot notice any real difference yet.

mismatched,
I have Comcast phone service. It has been very good for over a year. So far, Comcast has been far more reliable than Qwest which we had for many years prior. Customer service is far superior to Qwest as well in our experience.
Initially, rates were cheaper with Comcast which enticed me to switch, but since then Qwest has reduced their rates in desperation to regain lost customers. I've had enough of Qwest and unless Comcast screws up, I'm going to stay with them.
