That wouldn't be my guess.

WCML covers a huge area, and it's lowband VHF transmitter is cheap to operate.

From CMU's newsletter:

CMU Public Television Goes Digital March 31!

Tuesday, March 31 at Noon

It's finally arrived: CMU Public Television transmitters' analog signal will officially be turned off once and for all on Tuesday, March 31 at Noon. From this point on, see all of the programs you love on CMU Public Television with a higher-quality digital signal.

If you're viewing CMU Public Television off-air using an antenna, you get the added bonus of an additional channel of programming called "Create TV."

"Create TV" was designed to feature the most popular PBS lifestyle and how-to programming seen on Public Television - where lifestyle programming got its start!

More often called "do-it-yourself or how-to," the program genres seen on "Create TV" include viewers' favorite Public Television series and specials on cooking, travel, arts and crafts, gardening, home improvement and other lifestyle interests.

Your converter boxes will recognize the additional channel if you are viewing off-air using an antenna. If you are viewing CMU Public Television through cable, you will not notice any changes.

The transition to digital will change the way many people view CMU Public Television. It will also usher in a new era of possibilities to the viewer. Look forward to the best in picture and sound quality that DTV will allow! Prepare for change and get the facts by visiting www.wcmu.org.

"Turning off our analog signals and moving forward into the digital era is an exciting and beneficial change for our viewers," says Ed Grant, WCMU General Manager. "We do want to again encourage people who have questions to contact us before March 31 or call the "DTV Help Line" at 1-888-643-8809 in order to make this transition as smooth as possible for everyone. We look forward to continuing to bring our viewers the best that Public Television has to offer."

Again, if you are viewing through a cable or satellite provider, you will most likely be unaffected by any immediate changes. However, this transition will affect anyone who views TV "off-air" using an antenna. You will no longer receive a television signal for CMU Public Television after noon on March 31 if you have not installed a converter box for your television.

Have questions about the conversion to digital? Call CMU Public Broadcasting at1-800-727-9268, or you can call the "DTV Help Line" at 1-888-643-8809 for information and assistance. This service is sponsored by Don-Lors Electronics and a "live" person is available Monday - Friday, 7a.m. to 9 p.m. and Saturday - Sunday 7 a.m. to 3 p.m.

Get the facts about the Transition to Digital Television, happening March 31. If you need more information, please contact CMU Public Television at 1-800-727-9268 or visit www.wcmu.org for a list of Frequently-Asked Questions.

CMU Public Television's Channel 6 in Alpena will be broadcast on Digital Channel 57. Channels 27, 46 and 69 can be found on Digital Channel 17 in Cadillac. Channel 21 in Manistee will be located on Digital Channel 58. Channel 14 in Mount Pleasant will broadcast on Digital Channel 56. There will be additional changes in the months ahead and we will try to keep you informed in plenty of time to be completely informed on your options.

From the last paragraph, it looks like they are waiting until June to move to their post transition (final) channels.

Can anyone tell me what the subchannel situation is for our local FOX? I hooked up an OTA antenna tonight just because I was bored and I was appalled to see how much motion artifacting/pixelation I was seeing on a 720p HD channel. Cant say Ive ever seen anything quite like it from a 720p channel.

Were you watching on 33-1 or on 9-2? Because 9-2 is an SD subchannel and thus could look like that. 33-1 is HD and should be untampered with off the satellite.

Ask Mesickstan. When he last sent me data on WFQX, it was at full bandwidth with no subs.

OK, Im assuming there are prob no subs though as nothing showed up on my scan. Maybe they were just having some issues tonight I guess...

BTW, where is their tower located? Back 3 or 4 years ago I was never able to pick it up with my indoor antenna. Now Im getting it at close to full signal. Has the location of the tower changed in the last few years? Or has the power been upped I wonder?

The tower is located near Kalkaska along with ABC 29 and PBS. I believe it was down by Cadillac at one time and them they moved it north to Kalkaska. Now they are planning on moving it back to the Cadillac area and firing up Fox 45 on the Vanderbilt tower.

Does anyone know when WCML went off the air? I stuck around 'til a few minutes after 12 PM yesterday and it was still on.

And was there any type of sign-off? Or did they just cut the power?

Just got word from WPBN/WTOM/WGTU/WGTQ (boy that's a mouthful) that WGTQ-DT will air NBC on 8-2 around the time they make the switch to solely digital, which is June 12th. This is good news for NBC viewers the Eastern U.P.
WTOM-DT is rather low powered (78 kw) compared to most UHF DT stations (200-1000 kW) and has a directional antenna pointed in the Petoskey direction and and is difficult to receive in the Eastern U.P.

WGTQ-DT will be moving back to channel 8 in June and increasing their power from 1.9 to 15kW, likely eclipsing WTOM-DT's coverage area as well.

current WGTQ-DT 9 coverage: http://www.fcc.gov/fcc-bin/FMTV-serv...DS1133351.html
June 12 WGTQ-DT 8 coverage: http://www.fcc.gov/fcc-bin/FMTV-serv...DT1251096.html

WTOM-DT'ss coverage now and after June: http://www.fcc.gov/fcc-bin/FMTV-serv...=DT687918.html

Mesickstan, can you send me new data on WCMV? I'm wondering if anything's changed, not that I've heard anything to suggest it has. PBS stations have been making changes left and right recently, so I'm trying to cover all bases if possible.

FOX (33.1) was off the air last night (4/20) for a while. Of course, we never hear why they were off the air.

Maybe they're getting ready to fire up 27.1. It's showing up now, but still no broadcast.

Looks like Cadillac Telecasting is gearing up to move digital operations from Kalkaska back to Cadillac for WFQX. They'll be on RF 32 there. Time frame looks like June-July. They've submitted Construction Permit form 301 and DTV Transition Status 387. During the transition, they plan to keep broadcasting on 9-2.

Also, by July-August, WFUP plans to be broadcasting digitally. See form 387. Viewers can continue to pick up FOX on 10-2, after 6/12/09 until WFUP goes digital.

Are you saying 10-2 is going away after WFUP goes digital? I hope I'm just misunderstanding what you read. WFUP's signal only goes north to Mackinaw City. Between WFQX and WFUP, their coverage leaves out 1/3 of the DMA. WWUP-DT2 on 10.2 fills in that gap.

Here's what was written in their 387:

LICENSEE HAS MADE ALTERNATIVE ARRANGEMENTS TO PROVIDE ITS DIGITAL SIGNAL TO OVER-THE-AIR VIEWERS AND TO CABLE SYSTEMS. FOLLOWING JUNE 12, 2009 AND UNTIL CONSTRUCTION HAS BEEN COMPLETED AND DIGITAL SERVICE INITIATED OVER CHANNEL 45, THE WFUP SIGNAL AND PROGRAMMING WILL BE PROVIDED VIA WWUP-DTS SECOND DIGITAL CHANNEL, CHANNEL 10-2, BY AGREEMENT WITH ITS LICENSEE, HERITAGE BROADCASTING COMPANY OF MICHIGAN. NOTICES ARE BEING PREPARED FOR BROADCAST.

Hopefully, they do keep 10.2. SD is better than nothing.

Here's Lowell Shore's (chief engineer) response regarding FOX coverage in the UP after WFUP goes digital and WFQX goes back to Cadillac:

We will continue to multicast on 10.2. It will be in standard def which is 4:3 aspect ratio as it is now.

Mesickstan,

Even-though this isn't HDTV related but applies to DTV though. One thing I noticed on WBVC (Northern Michigan's The CW), during the beginning of the 2008-09 TV Season Smallville was being shown with blackbars on top and bottom of my TV. The CW transparent bug was in both the bottom black bar and within the episode itself. About a few months ago I noticed that Smallville is being shown in 4:3 format but not in 16:9 format. I tried emailing TV 7&4/ABC 29&8 about it and all I got back was an undeliverable email response. May be you could help me with why Smallville isn't being shown with black bars on top and bottom of the TV Screen. I'd like to know if you have any information on WBVC in a zip file format.

Jed,
CW is no longer broadcast OTA, so I have no data for it. I don't even get the CW with Ace Comm.'s IPTV. Shoot Mike Miller (mmiller@tv7-4.com) your questions. Let us know what he says.
