The WBRA signal here in BBG is spotty. Where 7/18, 10/30, and 27/17 are rock solid, 15/3 gives us problems. I realize there are folks a lot further away than me that get it fine. But maybe there is something about the ch. 3 frequency that affects propagation....Bob Lee mentioned something about this a while back.

Then again maybe its just my setup.

Hey, folks. A minor correction on the times I announced earlier. Masters HD on 7.1 today and tomorrow will start at 4:00 as indicated, but I was mistaken about the start time for the HD feature film Saturday; it actually begins at 1:00 to end before Masters coverage begins.

WBRA is my weakest signal other than WFXR-DT (for obvious reasons), but it's pretty solid except when there's the slightest bit of e-skip, then it goes away completely.

I was told that by the end of March, WBRA would turn off 15-2, 15-3, and 15-4 so the bandwidth that was being eaten up (6 Mbits/sec) could be given to the HDTV feed on 15-5, but I guess that hasn't materialized. I'm going to be gone the next few days in New Jersey (but I should still have internet) so maybe someone here'd like to call? I'll try to remember to do it this afternoon, but I might not get a chance to (I'll post here if I do). The number is 1(888)-332-7788, either ask for Ron Smith or put in extension 123 (no kidding).

Bob, why do you torture me? You show it one of the two weekends I won't be within 200 miles of WDBJ. This Saturday, I'll be in New Jersey with relatives for Easter, and next Saturday I'll be at the first-annual X Conference (UFO thing). If it screws up and it doesn't work, could you try again maybe the Saturday after? :P

What is e-skip and is this what is causing the stuttering in the PBS-HD feed?

It's a phenomenon that reflects VHF signals from 500-1500 miles away back to earth. It's mostly a summertime occurrence and is not constant, so I doubt this is your problem.

Masters looked and sounded great. Thanks again WDBJ. It will be a great summer of HD golf on CBS. I think the press release said 10 events in HD this year.

I forgot to mention earlier that the NCAA basketball 5.1 was incredible. It was the best audio for a sporting event. You could hear the sneakers , long range shots off the rim and thunderous dunks. Made watching the games much more enjoyable.

Congrats Bob! ST:TMP is coming in fine here in Greensboro. Too bad it isn't the ditectors cut with all the new CG stuff to make the picture whole. Oh well, HD theater copy is just fine for me!

I did notice that I didn't see any legal ID's unless you do like we do and every promo has a legal ID in it. I have gotten to the point I don't even look at promos anymore no matter who I am watching.

It also looked like it had been tightened up quite a bit. God, that V'ger sequence where the Enterprise enters just takes SO LONG. It seems it had been tightened up quite a bit. I also noticed some of the dialog was tightened up to, particularly where Kirk has the crew in the rec lounge and you see V'Ger destroy the station and Uhura has to be told twice to turn the viewer off. In this showing Kirk only told her once.

Great job on the whole presentation.

Bob:
That's the first I've heard of the Orioles broadcast...how about an e-mail with the schedule to your HDTV early adopter group.
Got home from work today and was able (by luck) to catch the first 30 minutes of ST:TMP....(my TV tunes to 7-1 on startup)..That was pretty cool...thanks.
I don't know how many versions there are of that movie but like foxeng said it seemed tightened up in a few spots...too bad the print wasn't as clean as it should have been.

Unfortunately I got shanghaied for Easter cleaning (my own fault, really) and missed it. Is a second showing likely?

Bob already told me there isn't a chance of it. He said he gets "one analog run and one HD run."

I missed it because I was 300 miles away from home.

Guess I'll have to wait for STII. Its the only one I have on DVD. It will be interesting to compare.

With the recent news about Fox broadcasting up to six NFL games per week in 720p this fall, here's hoping WFXR will be ready to make the transition to an actual HD signal before the second weekend of September. I already have a waiver for Fox on D* channels 388 and 389, so I'm hoping I'm covered when D* picks up the Fox HD East and West coast feeds. But if those games, the World Series in October and the Super Bowl in February aren't motivation for the local affiliate, we may never get a HD signal from them.

PBS-HD on Cox Cable (704) looked awful this am. Lots of pixels and jerky picture. I hope Cox is not running out of bandwidth. I am hoping Cox will be able to pick-up TNT-HD & INHD soon, so I hope they have the room. Does anyone know how many HD channels cable companies can hold.

Well, if it's WVPT, it could be them. When I drove through the other day, WVPY (I was unable to receive WVPT when we went through Staunton) was doing this:

21-1 PBS-HD
21-2 PBS // WVPT-51
21-3 PBS Kids
21-4 PBS You
21-5 Blank, but there

You see, they're doing almost the exact same thing WBRA is doing. It wouldn't surprise me if it looked just like WBRA too.

The short time that I had Cox HD I never had a problem with PBSHD. It might be either PBS or Cox doing some testing. I also heard that Cox in Hampton Roads is looking to add BravoHD and CineMaxHd to their service.

Does anybody know what the hangup is with Adelphia and WDBJ Ch. 7? Adelphia has been able to negotiate successfully with WSLS, WSET, PBS, multiple movie services, and a just announced INHD1/2 arrangement. Is there something special/extra going on with or required by WDBJ?

I just got the new DirecTV HR10-250 Tivo box and hooked it up to a Winegard Square Shooter antenna. Unfortunately the only OTA digital station that it could pickup is WPXR (36-1) which comes in solid with a signal strength of the low 70's (0 to 100 scale on the receiver). I get a signal in the low 10's up to 20 for WDBJ-DT, WSLS-DT and WBRA-DT but it is not strong enough to lock-on.

Anyone have a guess if a pre-amplifier would enable me to pull in CBS, NBC and maybe PBS with the Square Shooter? We are trying to sell our house and will be moving in about 5 weeks so I really can't justify putting up a larger outdoor antenna.

I was #33 on the list with Value Electronics and got one in the first shipment. From what has been posted on the TivoCommunity forum, Value Electronics is the only dealer to have shipped so far.

Basically, it does everything the DirecTivo box does but adds HiDef. The HiDef material on DirecTV works without a problem. I hoping to get the OTA HDTV working with a Channel Master 7777 preamp next week (on order from Warren Electronics).

Considering all the problems the Dish 921 had when it first came out, the HR10-250 from DirecTV seems to be a much more mature product. Is it worth $999 (actually $899 with $100 discount from VE)? Yes. I bought a HDTV set in Sept 02 and was ready to get a HDTV receiver when it was announced at the 2003 CES show (January 2003). It has been a long wait (15 months) but I'm glad I waited. All I need now is to be able to get OTA HDTV and I'll be truly happy with it.

I got my HR10-250 on Thursday also. I live 40 air miles from Poor Mountain. With one of those flying saucer TV antennas and a preamp, I get WDBJ-DT just fine. I'm sure I'd get it fine anyway as they have a very strong signal. I'd rather have a "real" antenna, but my better half, etc.

I would have doubt that a Square shooter would pull in WBRA-HD at all since it's on channel 3. You might need an antenna that will do a decent job on lower range VHF (2-6). If you can get the Marion transmitter you wouldn't need to pick up VHF, but Marion is in the other direction.

It has a few "Features." Sometimes the Navigation display is jerky. On mine, SD pictures are not centered on the screen (right hand border is about twice as wide as left hand border). I don't know if others have this "feature." Even SD transmitted on HD stations is off center, which is really strange since the panels are part of those broadcasts.

I exchanged emails with Warren Electronics who sold me the Square Shooter and ended up ordering a Channel Master 7777 pre-amp. With that I should be able to get everything except for WBRA-DT which may not work even with the pre-amp.

The naviagation menus on my HR10-250 are also a bit jerky but seem smoother today as it has loaded more of the program guide. The SD material is centered on my screen (left and right hand borders are the same width). I don't know if that is adjustable. I'm also using the HDMI-DVI cable supplied with the HR10-250 if that makes any difference.
