For the gadget enthusiasts here, this tivo announcement could be intriguing:

Pretty boastful. March 2nd.

Edit: too boastful.

They seem to be taking their time with the newscast. I see syndicated programming and some station promos in HD, but that's about it.

Has anyone else noticed 33/40 Dolby Digital transmissions on the HD feed on Direc TV I started noticing on my Bose 3-2-1 and even checked it last night on my traditional 5.1 system , making sure it was set to Dolby Digital mode and nothing especially voices are coming from the center channel all dialogs voices ect are coming from the front right and left speakers. Does anyone know who with Direc TV or 33/40 we could contact about this? I checked the other locals and they are all ok it is only 33/40

DirecTV shouldn't be doing anything to the audio. Does it sound that way off the air. (Yes, I know this is a silly questions since no one can pick them up OTA.)

I noticed the nightly news yesterday sounded funny, but I thought it was just that program.

I can get it OTA with my attic mounted antenna I leave operational for in case the dish ever goes out but it is connected to my Bose through the left/right rca outputs so I am not getting a true digital connection so I cant really tell. Like I said on my 5.1 system on every other channel the voices were coming out of the center channel as they should but on 33/40 over different days and programs there was zero coming from the center channel everything was being pushed from the from left right. Anyone else with 33/40 on Charter or Dish if you could check this out it would be appreciated so that we can see who I need to contact.

I confirmed your observation this morning by checking a Tivo'd recording of Modern Family that was aired last evening in HD. My source was Charter and the audio was output via toslink to a Denon receiver. The Denon indicated 5.1 DD but the center channel was actually output by the left and right channels.

Either the issue is at the network or at the station. Perhaps someone will chime in with their experience with WJSU DT as compared to WCFT DT.

Has charter started scrambling ESPN2 HD? 77.5 has been dark for me for several days (Leeds / Mtn Brook) though a strong signal and program lock continues to be registered by my Tivo.

Thanks for checking that out. At least I know that I am not going crazy! I might try to call an engineer at 33/40 tomorrow because if it is on two different providers especially since charter gets its feed OTA then it is an issue with 33/40 I would think.I also watched Modern Family and The Middle last night and had to switch my output to my Bose to PCM because I could not stand it in screwed up DD 5.1

I'm embarrassed to admit that I didn't even notice the different channels until I noticed your post and then I had to stand under my front ceiling-mounted speakers to tell for sure. I guess my setup is not optimal.

I suspect the issue is at the network?

I'm not 1,000% sure, but the last time I watched another ABC affiliate (WABG Greenwood, MS) their audio setup on network programming was correct. But that was several months ago, so who really knows.

I saw a license plate today and it made me laugh. It was a Virginia one of course, and it read "3340HD." I thought of Birmingham.

Well I have not been able to get into contact with anyone from 33/40 as of yet. I did hear however that CBS42 has plans to take their newscast to HD in the next 60 days which is going to leave 33/40 as the only one not in HD. I guess Spann is taking up too much of their budget

Naturally the first thing I thought was, “It's about time.”

As for 33/40, it's embarrassing to see someone who is widely acknowledged as being one of the better meteorologists in town on such a low budget looking set. Has it ever been updated since they came on the air 14 years ago? From my feeble memory, it seems like it has always been the same.

I know running two full power UHF stations is costly, but c'mon Allbritton, get with the program! HD News is apparently the Next Big Thing in Birmingham, and you're being left in the dust. I'm tired of seeing dot crawl anytime James Spann is showing weather graphics.

Speaking of CBS 42, does anyone happen to know what the hold up is for the HD? They obviously have the equipment to record/play HD promos for the news, as I've been seeing them off and on. And they seem to be recording news bits in widescreen already and playing them back squashed 4:3, which is what NBC 13 did before going full HD.

I'm just curious if it's a piece of equipment in the chain that needs replacing or if they have plans for a new set, etc. Or maybe HD weather.

I split my time between here and Bessemer.

Although, in the interest of nitpicking, before the analog shutdown I did receive WCFT and WUOA a few times via skip.

Agreed. Rather pitiful. Though I'm not locked into a lifetime subscription on my current TivoHD, I'm still not motivated to replace it with the Series 4.

Just heard Dunaway on WJOX saying this Wednesday is the day for the hd newscast for CBS 42. Great news!!
I think Dunaway is the best sportscaster on our local news. He brings news and tidbits that does not make the other stations a lot of the time........ this is coming from an Auburn fan too. lol

Musta been a snafu; I recorded the 5pm news and watched 10pm live and it was still SD. A lot of their taped segments/file footage/whatever it's called was apparently show in 16:9 and squeezed back to 4:3. NBC 13 let the same stuff slip right before their news went HD so hopefully it's just a matter of time. (ba da bump)

Summary Box: FCC allows blocking of outputs

5/7/2010, 6:18 p.m. CDTThe Associated Press
The Associated Press
(AP) THE RULING: The Federal Communications Commission says Hollywood can use so-called "selectable output control" technology to prevent illegal copying of movies.

HOW IT WORKS: Video programming is encoded with a signal to remotely disable set-top box output connections.

PROS AND CONS: Hollywood says this will make movies available for home viewing on demand soon after they hit theaters or even at the same time. Critics worry 20 million Americans with older TV sets won't be able to get these new-release movies, and it could interfere with legal recordings on some devices.

Summary Box: DirecTV wants to take lead in 3-D TV

5/7/2010, 4:45 p.m. CDTThe Associated Press
The Associated Press

(AP) MUST SEE 3-D: DirecTV Inc. wants to take the lead in offering 3-D TV. The satellite TV company sees 3-D as its competitive edge against other subscription TV companies. In June, DirecTV will debut ESPN 3D and three of its own 3-D channels.

THE CHALLENGE: Content produced in 3-D remains limited, and consumers still have to adopt 3-D TV sets more widely. There's also the matter of viewers getting used to wearing 3-D glasses when they're watching shows at home.

THE STRATEGY: DirecTV has to get exclusive 3-D content to stay ahead of its cable TV rivals, which also are ramping up 3-D.

Watched Seinfed yesterday on Fox 6 HD and it was HD. It had always been listed in the guide as HD. I understand that Seinfeld has been remasterd and the pq was ok. I had seen in before on TBS HD but was the first time I had seen it on Fox 6.

As far as I remember, the version on TBS was stretch-o-vision. This on Fox 6 is the actual HD remaster.

I don't know if the original series was shot 16:9 on film and cropped during post production or if this is a crop & zoom of the restored film stock, but it does look pretty good.

I lost 77.5 months ago but still have 75.3 (or at least did a few days ago). I just have basic service (plus Internet) and those two channels were passed in the clear for whatever reason. I'm on Mtn Brook / Leeds for Charter.
