Anyone have any news on when Charter might have CBS and ABC available in HD??

I got the service last week and I will say that the digital HD channels that I do have look great.

Just wish there was a way to get some local Charter news on when new channels will be added.

NBC Olympic HD Schedule
Below is NBC's HD schedule for the Olympics.
Note that the opening ceremonies will be shown on
August 13 in HD, starting at 9pm, and not subject to a
24-hour delay. The opening ceremonies on the regular NBC
channel start at 8pm on August 13.

The closing ceremonies will be broadcast in HDTV on August 30,
the day after the Games end, but the HD broadcast concludes
at noon. The GOP convention opens on August 30. (Though NBC
stations are not carrying the convention in HDTV -- but HDNet is --
presumably the digital stations will offer an SD version during their
scaled back convention coverage that night. And I guess NBC's
stations need a little break between the Olympics and the
convention.)

You mean the way the Olympics was broadcast last night by NBC on NBC HD was the was it was SUPPOSED to be??! What a mess. THe first hour or so in SD, albeit 16:9 or so, with Katie and Costas. Then a mid-course change to HD with a different crew and a restart of the replay. I couldn't decide who was to blame, NBC, 13, or who. Poorly done. Once they started their HD replay, aside from all the Sony commercials, it was pretty impressive. The travelogue piece was particularly impressive.

Yes, the HD coverage is delayed approximately 24 hours. There will be typically 8 unique hours of hd coverage played 3 times per day starting at 4am, 12 noon and 8pm. hd coverage is a totally separate production from the sd coverage. see the following links more more info:
http://www.avsforum.com/avs-vb/showt...hreadid=410990
http://www.avsforum.com/avs-vb/showt...hreadid=433745

regarding the sd coverage, much of it will be delayed but not to the extent of the hd. I think all of the coverage on nbc, with the exception of some sat and sun afternoon coverage, will be delayed due to the time difference, but there will be a good bit of live coverage during the daytime on cnbc, msnbc, bravo and telemundo.

BTW, today I ordered a single-cut antenna for Ch.5 (12.5ft long, 10dB) and a winegard VHF pre-amp (29dB) in hopes of picking up ABC in B'Ham. I think Beamur said he gets it at 82 miles away and I'm 92 miles away (Florence), so my fingers are crossed.

Ok, here's an update. I got the antenna up and it works great. Also, I'm not 92 miles away, I'm 94 miles away (like that makes a difference this far out). I posted a little longer thread in the main OTA area.

This antenna works great for picking up a 10kW signal 94 miles out, I'm impressed.

Edit:

Quick question. Does WCFT always pass DD5.1, or only when the program is DD5.1? I know WHNT out of Huntsville always passes 5.1, I just didn't see anything on WCFT last night, though I don't think there were any programs on in 5.1. Thanks.

charter_hsd, please help us out......... What can we do to expedite the process of getting CBS and ABC on Charter here locally? It's almost football season. Do they not realize how big that would be? Do they not understand how many people want it? Or are the numbers small enough that "we" really don't matter in terms of pushing things quicker?

Who specifically can we write or email so that our voice will be heard? Are the negotiations being handled locally?

I don't mean to be critical here, but "we're working on it" isn't cutting it any more. Charter has made some major strides with getting HD, the DVR's, On Demand, etc. and have a good product. But getting the locals in HD should be TOP priority. Someone has to bend in negotiations here...... tell us who to voice our opinions to and we will do so. Please.

Thanks in advance for listening...

Mike, I'm getting Fox fine as always, but for me, both PBSHD and NBC are no shows recently. I've got an antenna in the attic and it hasn't moved from the position that once yielded both those channels along with all the other Bham digitals. However, in the past week or so, PBSHD is completely gone and in the last day NBC13 is a no show.

Perhaps there is a temporary obstruction in our path is all I can figure, since the other variables (in my case at least) are the same

OK, I ran into someone at Best Buy yesterday (a customer) who indicated I should be able to get the BHM locals in Greystone Farms. Anyone have strategies for working from behind the montain? Can you aim the antenna in a way that helps?

Antenna web shows no local HD reception from here.

Hey guys,

I am new to this forum. Look's like a great source for specific info.

I live in the Montreat subdivision in a two story townhome (just moved in). I am getting my charter (blah!) hd service on Saturday, and I have lived with Charter HD at my parents' house in Vestavia for the past many months.

Since Charter seems slow on picking up more channels, both local and national (like HDNET/Movies, INHD/2, etc.) I am seriously entertaining an OTA setup. I ave a big attic which is basically uncluttered at this point, so I am thinking of an attic antenna installation (on the roof really isn't a good option).

Could yall give me some basic info about your setups, especially those of you in the over the mountain areas who deal with the same hilly, wooded terrain.

Can any of you get most of the locals with an attic antenna? If so, which antenna, which Tuner, any peripherals necessary like amplifiers, etc. Where did you buy the antenna and tuner (online, good deals?) Professional installation, DYI.

I know that is a lot of questions, but I consider myself pretty knowledgeable about everything hometheater/stereo related, except for this aspect of the hobby. I know my basics about tuners, but haven't shopped them in about nine months or more.

Related question, is this a proper forum for discussing local experiences with VOOM. I have read the Spottie Forum on Voom, and have researched them a bit, but I want some local color, so to speak. Anyone have VOOM in our area, did you get it at Sears? Installers good? Reputable installers in the area? Local DTV signals through VOOM.

Thank you for your help.

Putter, I too am right near where you are and have not been able to get the OTA signal. I believe the 'little' hill here that columbiana goes over is putting us in a dead spot. If anyone has any suggestions? Is it true that the digital signal is line of sight? thanks,

putter,

I have an antenna in my attic in Crestline, still tinkering with it to get PAX.

I bought from http://www.antennasdirect.com , 90 day money back guarantee if it doesn't work or you need to try another.

One of the largest Voom forums is over at Satelliteguys.us

They have an Alabama Voom thread in the forum.

I have never been able to pick up Fox 6.1, but had not really cared. All of a sudden, Saturday and Sunday 6.1 shows up with a pretty good signal, 50-65%. I haven't changed anything in my setup, so they must be tinkering with power??

Anybody know anything?

Well that's odd. I have always gotten a pretty good signal from Fox, but on Saturday and Sunday the signal dropped significantly. I guess it's time to adjust the antennas.

Bham Slugger,

I've spoken with the Director of Technical Operation for Charter in Alabama, and according to him your best bet is to contact the corporate office.

I have requested the contact information for the appropriate department at the corporate office. Once I have the contact info I will post it to the board.

Regards.

I have the same problems with Fox--started a couple of weeks ago--used to be no problem pulling in Fox, now it takes about 3 minutes before the Sammy locks in--and sometimes the pix stays on and sometimes not--and nothing has changed at my house.
