Slugger, it takes a few extra steps, but you can schedule a manual recording on 783. I've done this a few times since the guide info's been missing, and it works fine.

Thanks....... hopefully the guide data will be back up before I need to use it again. I don't understand what is taking so long to get new codes.

This is an email reply from Tim Costly, chief engineer at the WB, concerning HD and the audio problem on 21.2.

"Hi Tom,
I'm working on the audio today. There's nothing connected to the audio
inputs at this time. We have a HD receiver for WB, so the plan here is to get the network feed on in true 1080i. If all goes well, we just might make it in time for tonight's prime time."

So, we could see HD tonight on WB!!! They will be manually switching to and from HD to begin with, so be a little patient if things don't go perfectly to begin with.

That is great news about 21 going live with HD! I love the show "Smallville" and was glad to see it on the list of HD programs. Here is a cut/paste from the WB site about the HD content:

THE WB TO PRESENT NEARLY TWO-THIRDS OF ITS FALL SCHEDULE IN HIGH DEFINITION

NETWORK TO UNVEIL ITS 5.1 DOLBY SURROUND SOUND IN NOVEMBER WITH BROADCAST OF "LORD OF THE RINGS: THE FELLOWSHIP OF THE RING."
BURBANK, CA (August 4, 2004) - The WB Network continues its commitment to the latest in television technology as it will broadcast 9.5 hours, or 63% of its schedule, in high definition this fall, it was announced today by Garth Ancier, the network's Chairman.

The WB, which has had a substantial percentage of its programming in 1080-I HDTV since Fall, 2003, will broadcast dramas EVERWOOD, GILMORE GIRLS, ONE TREE HILL, SMALLVILLE, THE MOUNTAIN and JACK & BOBBY as well as comedies WHAT I LIKE ABOUT YOU, COMMANDO NANNY and REBA. The network will also broadcast its biggest events such as LORD OF THE RINGS: THE FELLOWSHIP OF THE RING, and its first made-for-TV movie, SAMANTHA: AN AMERICAN GIRL in high definition. The WB's Sunday EasyView broadcasts of ONE TREE HILL and THE MOUNTAIN will also be broadcast in HDTV. Additionally, beginning with the November broadcast of LORD OF THE RINGS, The WB will air its shows with 5.1 surround sound.

"Our viewers are early adopters of new technology so The WB wants to offer as much programming in high definition as possible," Mr. Ancier said. "It is important for us to give our audience the best experience possible, and given the cinematic scope and production values of our programs viewers will truly benefit from the amazing depth and clarity high-definition provides."

The WB's HDTV offerings:

Monday - EVERWOOD
Tuesday - GILMORE GIRLS; ONE TREE HILL
Wednesday - SMALLVILLE, THE MOUNTAIN
Friday - WHAT I LIKE ABOUT YOU, COMMANDO NANNY, REBA
Sunday - ONE TREE HILL (EasyView), THE MOUNTAIN (EasyView), JACK & BOBBY

FINALLY...WB in HD. I was able to pull in 28-2 (though not 21-2) on my DirecTV HDTivo. The bars were gray yesterday. Was that true for everyone else?

I had black bars on 21.2 and grey bars on 21.1.

Thanks Tim - i couldn't get it to work on my hd tivo on 21-2. 28-1 is live but very, very pixelated at the moment. This is awesome news - too much to watch in hd finally!

Brad,

On the TIVO I was getting 21-1 with gray bars and 28-2 with gray bars. I went into the Setup Menu and rescanned for channels. It found 21-2 and it is now working! It has black bars with good upconverted picture. The sound during the program and commercials is a constant clicking.

Tim,

I am afraid to re-scan because I don't want to loose 33-1 again. I will try it after MNF tonight. I never watch the WB or UPN but with HDTV - i'll take a good look at it.

Brad,

I didn't lose any channels in my DirecTV guide. I didn't even have my ABC antenna plugged in when I did the scan. The scan just added 21-2 (labeled as WTTO-HD) to the guide.

Can you scan for a single channel on the HD Tivo like you can on the Sony HD 200?

Can you guys give me any tips to picking upt ABC and FOX HD OTA? I live in Cullman county and I pick up 10, 13, 21, and 42 in HD fine but I can't get 6 or 33/40 to save my life. I have the Directv HD Tivo unit and I am using a CM 8 bay UHF antenna with a pre-amp. I know Fox 6 should be on freq 50 but my receiver shows very little or any signal strengh while on the CBS 42 I get about 93%. NBC 13 gets about 85%. WB 21 about 78%.

Is the 33/40 DT a VHF ch?

Thanks in advance for the help.

Fox is only broadcasting at 800 watts. In Cullman county, I don't think you've got much hope for that channel. ABC is on VHF channel 5.

I added the 21-2 to my Tivo HD DVR and it looks great. The show that is currently on "Everwood" should be HD but I have never seen a true HD program that was not wide-screen. Is this just an up-convert of the SD? Or is Everwood HD in 4:3?

Anyone have a good suggestion on a VHF antenna for getting ABC-HD in the Cullman area? I'm 55 miles from the transmitters on red mountain according to antennaweb.org. Is the 33/40 HD broadcast from B-Ham or T-Town? If it's T-Town I may be to far away. I want to see Monday Night Football, Lost, and Alias in HD.

Thanks in advance for the advice.

mboland,

Check Antenna Web to see which direction the stations are from you. http://www.antennaweb.org/aw/Address.aspx

33/5 is outside of Tuscaloosa. 40 and soon to be 9 is outside of Leeds.

You are about 65 miles from 33-1.channel 5. You need a good vhf antenna with a preamp. Your antenna needs to point south/west. More south than west.

How soon on ABC-DT 9? Leeds would be much closer for me.

From the center of Cullman to WCFT's tower is around 48-50mi.Looks like it is a couple miles south of Oakman on the map.The antenna of choice would be a Winegard YA10-2-6 lowbander w/preamp.Their output is fairly low @ 5-9Kw,but their tower height above average terrain is good, and your elevation is higher in general so you may have a good shot at them.

http://www.starkelectronic.com/wya1026.htm
I use a YA10-2-6 for low band on my tower(the one on the bottom of the array)..here's a pic...

http://community-2.webtv.net/GregBar...TowerAntennas/

Also looks like it may be a while before you get an ABC that's closer to you(WAAY) from Huntsville.

Checking my signal strength on my DirecTV HD Tivo unit I am getting a signal from Frequency 5 and every now and then one of the tuners will lock on the signal at around 40%. Mos of the time both tuners are 5-15% range. All this and I do not have a VHF anteanna at all. My current antenna is a 8 bay bow-tie channel master that is UHF only. It would be sweet if I could lock on with one of those indoor units as a first try.

You can just about be assurred of getting WCFT with a VHF antenna. Given your location, you could very possibly get everything from Birmingham (except for Fox) with a decent VHF/UHF combo antenna with a good amp. You would probably have to rotate between due south and southwest though to recieve everything. On most evenings and some days, I can get WIAT-DT (CBS) from Birmingham at about 90 miles from the transmitter.

There is a guy who posts on the tennesseevalleyhd.net forum who lives in Killen, AL (near Florence) who gets WCFT reliably at about 92 miles from the transmitter. You should get it with no problem.

Anyone have any ideal when WBRC will up power?

After reading on this thread yesterday about the 21-2 HD I just did a ch scan and it found 21-2 on it's own. 21-1 and 21-2 is the same programs but man does the 21-2 look SOOO much better. Sure makes you wonder why a independent like 21 can do this and all the others only provide a good signal on HDTV boradcast only. SD, and commercials on 21-2 blow away everything you will find on 13-1 and 42-1 that is not HD.

I went to Mock Electronic (Huntsville) on my lunch break today and got a 7' yagi that is special cut for ch 5. I plan to put this one in my attic. Man I sure hope I can pull in ABC-HD. According to the AVS thread on the new show "LOST" its the best HD put out by a network to date. The show is cool and to get it in HD with the great sound they are all talking about will be sweet. Can't wait till I get home.....fingers crossed that in the attic with a signal amp will do the job.

I figured out what happened to NBC 52-1, on my Dish 921.

I had lost NBC last week, good signal strength but no picture or sound.

I deleted 52-1 from my 921 and added it back.

Lo and behold it was remapped to 13-1.

NBC finally added PSIP remapping data that the 921 liked.

Well the new antenna worked after much effort. The box the antenna was in was 7' but once I got the thing together it was more like 12'...lol

I first tried the attic and that did not work. I could only get a very unstable signal in the 20-30% range. I hated to put that big honkin' thing on my roof but I did anyway. I now have a locked on signal at 91%.

I'll keep it up there till DirecTV gets our locals in HD. With 33/40 not being and O&O station thats what it's going to take even when they do add the east/west ABC-HD.

From the extreem north edge of Cullman County (Vinemont) I can now get all the B-ham DTV except for Fox 6/50. From the way you guys talk I can forget that one for now. The good thing about Fox 6 is they are O&O by Fox so when DirecTV adds the east/west HD feeds I should be able to pull that one in as well. I'd love to get the Baseball Playoffs in HD but as long as they get the deal done with Fox in time for "24" and "Tru Calling" in January I'll be happy. I have the Sunday Ticket so I'm getting the Fox-HD NFL games.

For any who are interested in signal strenght from way up here in Cullman/Vinemont here are my details:

Receiver: DirecTV HD-Tivo HR10-250
Antenna 1: CM4228 8-Bay Bow-Tie Pointing toward Red Mountain
Antenna 2: 12' CM Yagi cut for Ch 5 Pointing toward the 33/5 Tower
Antenna 3: Antenna Direct 4-Bay Bow-tie Pointing towards Huntsville
Pre-Amp: $30 Phillips from Wal-Mart
Single Story Home with plenty of 30'+ trees nearby.

Birmingham:
CBS 42/30 - 92%
ABC 33/5 - 91%
NBC 13/52 - 85%
WB 21/28 - 78%
PBS 10/50something - 70%
Fox 6/50 - NOTHING

Huntsville:
Fox-WB 54/41 - 90%
CBS 19/59 - 80%
NBC 48/49 - 77%
PBS 25/? - 75%
ABC 31/32 - NOTHING

Yeah, I'm about 5 miles from the Fox tower and on a good day I can get it in the 20% range. They stated that they would be turning up the power July 1st 2005.

I am in Pelham and am pulling in fox at 85%. I use a CM 4228 and some other Channel Master amps. One thing about FOX - be sure to check ever angle, height, depth, nooks etc to find the perfect spot. Same with abc 33/40. Sometimes it will take an hour in an attic to find the best spot.
