I'm unfamiliar with the 3250HD box, but the coax input is what you'd use for the antenna. The type of antennat you'll need depends on your location to the towers. It's been posted countless times on these forums, the best place to go to learn what you'll need is www.antennaweb.org.
I have a Channel Master 4228 8-bay bowtie antenna with a Channel Master 7775 preamp connected to my Dish 811 HD receiver. I'm in Tuscaloosa and I get great CBS reception and mediocre NBC and WB reception. Hope this helps.

I don't have cable, but I've not seen a cable box that can accept an OTA signal. The 3250HD box doesn't have an "antenna in" coax input; so, you'll probably need another set top box for OTA.

cpnkirk,

The IGN game board http://www.ign.com doesn't like the all in one game console cables.

If you have a GameCube, the ONLY component cable available is from Nintendo.com directly.

Monster makes a PS2 & XBOX component cable.

Before I get into trouble for starting an off topic conversation, let me say that if you have any more info on the game console cables, please PM me.

Now, back to your previously interrupted thread:

The Charter service technician came by mere minutes ago, and checked out my PQ on the low channels. comedy central has been especially bad, very very grainy picture - something I never noticed until recently, not sure if it appeared when I got the new TV, or when I got the new HD box, or if it's unrelated to those things. He checked the signal strentgh and it was about +14. He says that is plenty, possibly even too much, and so maybe they can make an adjustment somehow. Has anyone else noticed a really bad picture on channel 45 (Comedy Central)? That's the main channel that has this problem.

One other thing: I asked him about the 8000HD (high def DVR) box, and he said they are expected in May. Now the only question is: can I do without the timeshifting for 2 months? lol

Antennas: Another good source for type, size, aiming info is www.titantv.com

Sources: those of you that are self-installing, are you buying them locally, and if so where? I'm in Pelham and titantv.com recommended a Winegard Prostar 7015.

Also, has anyone heard if Charter plans to add HDnet to the lineup in the Birmingham area? The Charter web page has the HDnet logo, and HDnet claims Charter is a supplier...

Not at the current time. Some Charter markets chose HDNet over Discovery HD. My understanding is that for now, it is one or the other. JMO, I'll take Discovery if only is an option.

Their next two targets are getting the other two locals online, CBS and ABC.

Bhambrad, Sign up for titantv (free), then go to 'My Guide'. In the header there's a link called "Antenna Selector". After that, answer a few obvious questions (location, house type, etc.) and that should do it for you.

I noticed that we finally got programming info on 21.1. The programming info was showing Smallville in HD, but ofcourse it wasn't. So, now the only digital channel with no programming info is NBC. You'ld think they could get this handled.

Well, I have a Toshiba 34HF83 being delivered tomorrow. Can anyone recommend a good OTA installer? Also, where can I find a good deal on a DVI cable?

Many Thanks!

Let's start calling NBC 13. I will make my call today.

Use the link or call NBC and tell them they have no audio/video again. They switch from some other sea port so they can not monitor the signal.

this isn't a reply to the above but i couldn't find a better place to post this..

1st i am moving to birmingham in 2 months. i will be living in the cherokee bend south subdivision of mountain brook. i have been following your birmingham posts for some time with great interest. it looks like i'm going to go with charter for cable, but i also plan to try and pull OTA signals as well to get the maximum number of HD channels. Its just so addictive. I haven't seen many comments in this post about which OTA STB's folks are using and i've read that each brand has its own personality best suited to a location. i was wondering if there was a concensus among the birmingham crowd which STB was better for this area. I am planning now on getting the SIR-T351 or the SIR-T165. The 351 is newer and if for no other reason will probably be the chosen one. I am also looking at the radio shack 15-1880 indoor antenna. on antennaweb, it looks like i'll be pretty close to the towers so i may not have to go throught the hassle of mounting a fullsize antenna. anyway, i'll be running this through a samsung HLN437W which has a max resolution of 720p. fwiw, we get INHD 1 and 2 with our package with TWC here in Mississippi and they are pretty cool. I hope they come to birmingham. some of the coolest shows are the IMAX reruns that look and sound great on the HD screen.

My only hesitation about the SIR-T351 is the lack of QAM, should this bother me?

Thanks for a great thread, brian.

I have the T-151 and I like it a lot. I would try the zenith silver sensor antenna if you are in Mountain Brook. It is UHF only, but I know it gets great results. As far as QAM goes it doesn't mean anything. The cable companies encrypt all their stuff anyway, so having QAM don't buy you any extra channels.

I used to live in Cherokee Bend.. . . Because of the topology of Mtn Brook (esp that area), in my opinion you can't really go by how close you are to the towers for OTA reception. Shades Mountain gets in the way quite a bit. Depending on where exactly you will be living, you may get great or cruddy signals.

You'll find out soon! Good luck.

Well, I agree with that. I live off of Cherokee Road, so I'm even closer to most of the transmitters than the Cherokee Bend area. Since I'm in the "shadow" of the mountain, no indoor antenna has provided any result - and I went through nearly ALL of them. Currently I have a CM7777 with an 8 bay 4228 in the attic and reception is even iffy there. I'm going to have to go with an exterior mounting location next.

So, after a couple of weeks of HDTV ownership, here are a couple of questions:

1) Is there some way to connect an antenna to my TV without spending upwards of $300? My TV does not have an ATSC tuner built in, and I have charter cable, so I don't have an antenna in connector there.

2) The 3250HD box that I have sometimes quits working through the dvi cable. This happened before, but then it started again later. Right now I'm only getting component output, which will cause a problem later when I get the component cable for my game console - then I'll be out of inputs on the TV! Anyone know what causes this & how to fix it? My next attempt will be to turn on the TV & make sure the dvi switch (which has worked perfectly up till now...) is on that selection, so the box can "see" the TV when I unplug & replug it...maybe a forced reboot of the box will start up the dvi again?

There is no magical solution. You have 3 basic options for receiving/tuning DTV signals:
1. ATSC tuner integral to TV
2. ATSC tuner integral to cable/sat receiver
3. Separate ATSC tuner

Since you have ruled out 1 and 2, you are left with option 3. You can often find "open box" deals from CC and BB for under $200.

Does anyone know where there's a reliable PBS-HD schedule? I missed the NOVA last night on storm chasers and I'm hoping to catch it if it's coming on again. I love stuff on tornadoes.

The link to the $49 STB from DirecTV is dead. I wonder if it's because it wasn't a valid offer? If they've dropped it this fast from the offer I got I'm gonna try to get a refund.

cpnkirk,
I have a Panasonic TU-DST52 that I dont need anymore, because I bought the Hughes for DirecTV, which has OTA. Brand new from a merchant it goes for 400, and I bought it brand new for 300 on ebay. Send me a PM if you are interested in buying it. I only used it for about 4 months.

Brian
