So, now on the 4228 I am getting reasonably good signals in San Mateo, CA for CBS, PBS and ABC. YEAH, ABC!. NBC is coming in okay, but not that one is not so critical now since D* offers it on satellite.

But, my question is the following: I cannot seem to get anything for FOX or WB, even though, they are transmitting from San Bruno as well, same direction from me 323 degrees.

Is there somewhere I can find out what their power is, maybe that is the reason?

Do they come in over VHF at all, I am using the 4228 with a CM7777 using the UHF input, maybe the VHF would help?

Thease are al from Sutro (right?) so I was wondering if they messing with the transmitter, or if I need to trim the tree again (most of my signal problems are too much tree I think).

I'm having problems getting 2.1 & 4.1 digital OTA. I'm pretty sure I was getting those stations fine when I first installed my HD-Tivo, but over the weekend I was testing some things and getting 0 signal for 2.1 & 4.1.

The antenna I'm using is a pole mounted yagi from Rat Shack that the previous owner had installed and it seems to work fine for 5.1, 7.1, 9.1-5, even 11.1.

I tried putting a variable attenuator in line but that only reduced my signal quality on the other stations I was receiving, so I guess I need to try going the other way and pre-amping the signal.

Any other folks in San Jose/Almaden suddenly lose 2.1 & 4.1?

Here's a link for a station listing, there are also some links on this page to obtain transmitter power although I think all the bay area stations are at full power.

Fox and WB both broadcast from Sutro. KNTV-11.1 is the only DTV station using VHF, they have a UHF mirror at 48.2 from Mt Allison.

thanks
any ideas why these wouldn't come in, and the others do? I mean, they are similar power and exact same direction

I have no idea, only the Gods of radio frequency can answer that, maybe. They are both high in the UHF band, channels 56 and 57. Certain model antennas have better gain in that range than others, plus there is something about ch.41 causing interference in this range also but I don't know the particulars.

Weird. I'm in Menlo Park. I just started getting 4-2 this weekend.

My 2-1 is good, House Tivo'ed the other day. 44-1 was OK on Friday cause it tivo'ed Enterprise.

But tonite, I tried to check 44-1 and I get the "Searching for signal on Antenna In..." Does anyone else have trouble w/ 44-1? I don't want to miss Friday's Enterprise...

This is a copy of a post from the Yahoo SF Bay Area HDTV forum,

"I changed over to KPIX channel 5.1 tonight and my Sony came up with a
box that said: "Channel 5 can now be seen on channel 44." I pushed the
OK button and my tuner switched to 44.1 and there was CBS 5. KBHK is
gone. It doesn't show up on 45.1. Just recently it had moved to 44.1.

The Sony receivers follow the PSIP channel info sent by the station, so
that means that KPIX is sending the wrong information. I called the
KPIX newsroom and the person on the phone said "We're news. I'll tell
engineering."

It would be interesting to hear what this PSIP change did on other
receivers.

In case you didn't know, both KPIX CBS 5 and KBHK UPN 44 originate from
the same control room.

At 9:35, just as I was about to send this, KPIX-DT apparently went off
the air. I can't get it on 29, 5 or 44 now. Analog is still there."

Sorry, I'll clarify. I used to get 44-1 on my HD Tivo. Last nite it didn't work, says it can't get the signal. Did UPN move to another channel?

Hi,

Little bit off topic, so please excuse me.

I got my HDTV tuner last month and finally decided to cancel my cable service as of today. Called and the rep asked the reason for cancelling. I said got HDTV tuner and getting excellent reception etc etc. She said, "Sir, you CAN'T get HDTV without some SERVICE". I told her that I'm getting and she doesn't know anything about HDTV. She said she has been in this line for long time and I said, "exactly!". Then I told her to come to my house this evening and we can watch CSI in my spanking Panasonic 50" DLP TV hooked upto LG 4200A and some old roof top antenna !

I'll make popcorn and wait for her. I doubt she'll come :-)

Anyway, so I fired an email to the comcast feedback about this episode and advising them not to spread lies about so called "SERVICES".

--------------- my email with this thread link at the bottom ------

I just recently bought a HDTV tuner to see over the air HDTV channels. I've been getting them in excellent reception using an outdoor antenna. So, I called comcast to disconenct my basic cable service. My service is disconnected as of today. So, good bye analog ghosts and poor sound from comcast cable !!!! Hello _FREE_ HDTV signals :-)

The rep I talked to was Monica. Just want to tell you how misinformed (or brainwashed ?) she is about over the air HDTV.

Please educate your customer service representatives about the reality of the over-the-air HDTV broadcasts and yes, Monica (the sales rep I talked to), you CAN get over the air HDTV in brilliant 1080i/720p using over the air antenna and a HDTV tuner. She is convinced (I say brainwashed ?) that you need some sort of "service" to get over the air HDTV. I've given her invitation to my home and check herself the picture quality. Please STOP spreading lies to the customers that you need some sort of "service" to get over the air channel and you cant get them with outside antennas.

Here is a link I'd like to send her and all your customer reps. This is about HDTV over the air reception in bay area.

http://www.avsforum.com/avs-vb/showt...0&pagenumber=1

Thanks

Mudit Wahal

TVgeek5, from your postings one could get the idea that you have intimate and/or insider knowledge of what is going on at KPIX, even from inside KPIX, if so it's great to see the postings, I hope you continue to post this sort of info.

Edit-I just saw your post where you indicated you work at KPIX-5, it's great to have you here.

TVgeek5, I'd also like to welcome you here !

CBS is the best HD station I've seen so far ! ABC and NBC are okay as they do some have some artifacts/pixelations. I'm not getting FOX, WB and KBHK. Need to goto the roof and replace the splitter/cable.

CSI and Without A Trace in HD widescreen rocks !!

I wish Amazing Race was in widescreen

I agree about KPIX being the best quality to date, but TVgeek5 indicated they were switching to a (Harris) Flexicoder because the Unicoder failed, is this Flexicoder the same piece of crap KNTV uses? I hope not...

Please help.

I'm just getting into the "HD scene" and I've tried searching for my zip code, or SSF or any number of other combinations but I still haven't found what I was looking for.

I live on the south side of San Bruno Mountain just of off Hillside Ave in South San Francisco - in a development called Terrabay. It is really a little valley formed by San Bruno Mountain and Sign Hill. From what I gather - I am at possibly the worst location to receive an OTA HD signal. Can anyone tell me if that is true? Does anyone live near me that can confirm this? I currently have DirecTV and I need to know if I should bite the bullet and order Comcast HD service as well or should I go the DirecTV HD TiVo route and hope that I can receive an OTA signal?

Any thoughts? Thanks in advance.

Dan

44-1 is out for me as well. I presume its down, so I've scheduled an SD backup recording for Enterprise.

Also, as I mentioned earlier, my reception for 2, 4 and 44 (56, 57 and 45) has suddenly dropped way off. I just repositioned the antenna (moved it back about 8 inches) and the reception is back to what it was (except for 44-1 of course).

Also has it been mentioned that KRON/4 is broadcassting HD Net these days on 4-2? there's even guide data for it (on my DirecTV system).

Can't get any digital signal from UPN44 today. Which is rather annoying since Enterprise is on tonight, and not only is analog obviously not HD, my analog reception is also rather crappy.

Hope that gets fixed soon.
