If K15CU-D isn't running COZI in 1080i, that must be a very recent change. It was definitely 1080i last time I spoke with someone in that area only a month or so ago.

I e-mailed a couple of the people on the License to Cover application filed for K15CU last August. One of them was Doug Lung. You may recognize that name. He got right on it and the call sign was fixed today! I found out that the programming is being supplied by KNTV and their engineers seem to be responsible for the station.

Sorry, wrong station. The trimmed post I saw said Cozi and I incorrectly assumed KNTV 11.2

I agree on wide-screen network, but the programs shown are not worth 1080i.

It took some digging but I finally found that 704 x 480 is a defined 16:9 format.

For stations that I don't receive my list is only as good as the information received from viewers. Chuck said Cozi is on 15.1 and a Spanish program is on 15.2, so I just switched the two. Supposedly the Spanish program is Telemundo. Since KNTV is furnishing Cozi to the station, Telemundo makes sense.

There are stations that are transmitting 16:9 480i programming. Check out 3-2, 3-5 and 3-8, 20-3 and 20-4, and 60-3 to name a few. Some sub-channels have programming that is made for 16:9 but it's being transmitted in 4:3, so everyone is really skinny. You have to change the picture format to make it look good. Examples: 26-6, 36-3, 38-3, and 42-2.

Signal Update: About a week ago I reported that the distant signals were all above normal levels for several days in a row here in San Francisco. The Walnut Grove stations that are normally viewable only part time were solid for this long period. Well, that changed drastically over the weekend. For the past few days most of the signals from Walnut Grove and the South Bay have been much lower than normal. KAXT 1 and KEXT 27 completely disappeared and there was no sign of 3, 6, 10 or 13 from Walnut Grove at all. Then about an hour ago I noticed that everything was way up again and channels 1, 3, 6, 10, 13 and 27 were all 18 dB or better.

Another observation: Yesterday K03HY from Mt. Tam was varying from a high of 22 dB to a low of 12 dB. Every once in a while the signal would take a slow dip, the picture would break up and then disappear. It would hold at the low level for a few minutes and then slowly rise again. The picture would return and it would be solid again. I didn't realize that low VHF could vary that much over a 14 mile distance.

At the same time you saw the drastic change I saw a return to normal here. Walnut Grove stopped the wild swings and no more need to record off of Salinas stations. Conditions to Sutro returned to normal too. They had been bad. I too am surprised to hear of such a large change on RF 3 over just 14 miles. I never see that here. KCSO is also 14 miles and very solid. I suspect we'll see fewer big signal swings over the next week as we have unsettled weather coming. Springtime is often best for nominal conditions as we usually don't have a strong high pressure regimes like we get in the Fall and Winter.

FYI, KMMW on 28 continues to be off the air for over a month now and no STA for silent operation filed with the FCC. Seems impossible but I'm beginning to wonder if the operators know it's off the air. We all know how many LPTV stations are not monitored for proper operation. Maybe I should e-mail them. KBSV has been off the air all this week which is the reason I'm seeing K15CU. That station is never off the air. Maybe no one monitors it either.

Stunning development! Grit TV (Virtual 66.4) is showing a 4x3 print of "Desperado" in a 4x3 aspect ratio! Somebody finally figured out that showing "Walking Short" is not the way to display movies? We'll see if it continues ...

FYI, the sister station, Escape (Virtual 14.4), is still showing squished 4x3 content in a 16x9 layout.

If anyone is bored and wishes to add their voice to the OAR fight, let them know! Finally, a crack in the armor ... let's bust it wide open!

There is no 15-2 on KCU15D. Cozi is on 15-1. There are no other subchannels. There is no guide info. If someone has a contact at KNTV maybe they could get them to add guide info.

Not so fast. K15CU 15.2 is TLMD which I assume means Telemundo. Unfortunately KBSV came back on the air today so I can no longer receive K15CU but I'm positive 15.2 was Spanish SD and the channel list in my TV still shows it as TLMD.

Dave, you may need to rescan as the call sign has been fixed. It no longer shows as KCU15-D.

I know nothing of a "Doug Lung", but I do know that one time their "engineers" completely killed the flat-screen TV (required a hard reset to get working properly again!) in my living room, and I couldn't tune into KNTV with my other TVs. I DID call them up and tell them what was happening and apparently they fixed it...

What about "Charlie's Angels", in 16:9, most of them in a very nice clean sharp transfer apparently from the original 35mm film?

You can't see stuff like what Farrah Fawcett was doing on that show today, the station would get shut down by the FCC...HEY WAIT A SECOND, HOW COME THEY DON'T GET SHUT DOWN BY THE FCC?!???

Even better was some oldies station showed the second "Matt Helm" movie with Sharon Tate wandering around in a sheer outfit no underwear sopping wet for half the movie. Now THAT'S 1080i-worthy!

This is why I need to move K03HY down above the fog into San Francisco! The engineer from Salem Communications told me once that when they owned 100.7 FM for San Francisco that they had moved it up to Mt. Tam and on certain days when the fog was just right, the signal wouldn't make it to their studio in Fremont. So, they moved it back off of Mt. Tam.

Are you able to pick up KKPM-CD off of Sutter Buttes most of the time with KMMW off the air? KKPM-CD would cover most of Sacramento if only KMMW didn't eat away the southern half of the city.

Sure, I'm in, but I'd prefer the REAL OAR for pre-1952 movies, Stanley Kubrick's last POS or all his 1.66:1 movies, the full-frame VHS/DVD movies that were actually shot for 4:3 in the 80s due to home video (well, some of them, at least), etc.

Sometimes, rarely, they actually DO show the REAL OAR (intended, not coerced)...

Not at my location but I'm in a really bad spot for the Sutter Buttes. I can see it on the spectrum analyzer all the time but it needs a few dB of ducting help to become strong enough to decode. I'm also getting some interference from KFTL and I believe KDTV-CD both on 28 make reception harder. Attached is my path to KEFM which I think is the same as to KKPM.

I e-mailed someone listed on a KMMW application but no response so far.

I don't yet know if it was a one off or will last for a while.

Route66 on KAXT 1.2 was shown in cropped and pillared 16:9. Bad Bad Bad. When I cropped it to 16:9 it did fill my 16:9 screen but of course the top and bottom were chopped off.

Another interesting event, "Run For Your Life" showed US66 sign posts in Albuquerque, N.M. which is correct.

Yeah, Route 66 had some of their shows cropped into 16x9 for the dvds (first season?). Bad idea. Stupidity gone WILD !!!

As to Grit ... looks like a one off. Back to showing Walking Short .. sigh

I finally got around to capturing some KPIX bit-stream for analysis. They've definitely upgraded their encoder to something state of the art. I'll guess it's either from Harmonic or Motorola. It's the same encoder that I see used for almost all of the satellite HD channels on Comcast.

Some interesting tricks being used are 3 B-frames and sending a quantiser matrix every frame. AFD is also being sent.

Here's a bit-rate graph. The 5.1 channel is now capped at 15 Mbps.

Sure, no problem. B-frames stands for Bi-directional frames. In these frames, the motion prediction comes from both a frame in the past and a frame in the future. Predicting from a frame in the future helps with objects that were previously obscured and then appear in the frame (either moving in from the sides of the frame or appearing from behind some other object).

The interesting thing about the new KPIX encoder, is that it's using three B-frames in a row. Usually, only two B-frames in a row are used. Here's a section of the stream where it's using three B-frames. It should be noted that when FOX upgraded their encoders in 2009, they originally used three B-frames. This ended up breaking a few Cisco/Scientific Atlanta STB's, so they went back to two B-Frames in a row.

The new encoder is also using an adaptive number of B-frames. This is done to handle heavy motion better. The B-frames have to predict from the I and P-frames surrounding them (they can't predict from other B-frames). So the greater number of B-frames that you're using increases the temporal distance between the predictors. When there's heavy motion, it's better to use less B-frames since there will be less motion between the predictors. Here's a section of the stream where it starts out with one B-Frame in a row, changes to two, back to one for a little while and then back to two (with two consecutive P-frames near the end).

The quantiser matrix is a weighting table for the DCT coefficients. It's a 64 entry table (for an 8x8 DCT) that provides a number that's used to divide each DCT coefficient with. A higher number will cause more DCT coefficients to be zero and not get sent at all. The table is ordered by frequency, with DC being the first entry. There's a separate table for intra blocks and predicted blocks.

The interesting thing about the KPIX encoder is that's it's sending a matrix for almost every frame. Although it's certainly part of the MPEG-2 specification, this is the first time I've ever seen it used on a broadcast encoder. Here's two frames were the tables change slightly.
