Can anyone explain why 4.1 and 7.1 have such flat, muffled audio which lacks "presence" compared to most other TV stations ? Those two stations give an uncomfortable audio experience.

I wonder if there's a plan to eliminate KCSO?

Thanks for the update, but I'm not sure how to show this in my lists. Are both the KCSO and KMMW transmitters on the air?

Interesting... I don't notice any problems with the audio on either of those stations. The one that is the worst for me is KPIX 5.1. Their audio is so compressed that everything is full volume... even the quiet parts of the program. KNTV has always had more dynamic range than the other stations and has some of the best audio in the area.

Agree on both counts, KPIX audio is absolute garbage with near-zero dynamic range, just terrible. And KNTV easily wins the award for best audio in the bay area. KGO is also somewhat compressed with low dynamic range, and out here on Comcast it has issues such as popping and clicking in the audio track. I'd rate KTVU as second in market behind KNTV with KPIX a very distant last place.

Yes, both are on the air. I think you can list KMMW as VC 33.1 / TC 28.3 and KCSO as VC 3.3 / TC 3.3. KCSO VC & TC are just the same. It's just a little weird to not be using the .1 sub channel. They could have used simply swapped the two sub channels and used VC 28.1 for TC 3.3.

At least they didn't set KCSO VC to 3.1. That would have wreaked havoc over here with KCRA.

EPG says KTVJ, but it sure doesn't look like it. Isn't KTVJ a classic TV/old movie station with some Sonoma County local programming?

On the plus side, I'm getting less picture breakup on the new 12 compared to the old 3.

It's exactly the same as the old 3. KTVJ has not been on the air before.

So you think that KNTV is annoying to watch with its problem? Try watching KMMD with this problem.

KMMD is a low power station on 39 from Mt. Toro. It's transmitter is power cycling every 10 seconds. Attached is spectrum analyzer display showing the problem. Each horizontal box is 2 seconds. I marked the image showing the OFF-to-OFF time of 10 seconds. It starts with 3 seconds off, then switches to low power for 3 seconds, then ramps up to full power in 7 steps in 4 seconds and turns off again.

This isn't even the first time this station has had this problem.

I sent them an e-mail too but LP stations can very non-responsive.

It's amazing that some of the problems I see on the low power stations have gone on for a long time. I get the feeling that lots of low power stations are not monitored at all. Besides the problems Chuck has mentioned with KCSO, KMMW and now KMMD, you can add KMMC on Mt. San Bruno. It hasn't been sending any PSIP or TSID information for weeks. It transmits on 40.3 and shows up as 40.3. There is no 40.1 or 40.2. Also, KDTS 52 (RF 8) from Mt. Diablo had "BOB-4" supered over their picture for at least a couple of months. They finally fixed that, but the video still remains jumpy. Even with a strong signal, the video does occasional short freezes.

I've also noticed that program feeds on several stations either lock up or freeze, or disappear, and they remain that way for several hours or even days.

Then you have stations like full power KMTP 32 that transmit several sub-channels with nothing on them. Program guides show programming information, but there's no programming. They have 32.1, 32.5 and 32.6, but nothing on 32.2 and 32.4, and don't even have a 32.3.

There used to be an analog KTVJ licensed to Petaluma on channel 36, but the license was transferred to One Ministries a while back. It just came on the air as a digital station on channel 4, virtual 12, on Saturday from Mt. Tam. It's city of license is now San Rafael. It has a power (ERP) of 3 kW. Channel 3 was at 2.5 kW.

K03HY, channel 3, San Francisco, another One Ministries station, went off the air from Mt. Tam and will be moving to a new location at the Clay-Jones building on Nob Hill in San Francisco. It will run 3 kW at the new location. There will be a delay before it comes back on the air, because the tower at Clay-Jones has to be made stronger before the channel 3 antenna can be added.
