Aren't they running 16x9 SD currently?

They are actually using HD cameras but the video is being downconverted. The new set and HD newscast debut Saturday at 6 p.m... http://www.VARTV.com/

Finally! I'll start watching them again. Thanks for the update, Robert.

The HD will be nice but I watch news for the news not because it's in HD.

It'll be interesting to see them in HD since they have been in widescreen SD "forever..."

I agree that it will be interesting to see the difference. We haven't paid much attention to the fact it's in SD.

Another difference to watch for is how the station uses the entire 16x9 screen. I've already noticed that the WVEC bug, at times, has moved into the far lower righthand corner of the picture...

At least WAVY took down that "HD" bug a few months back.
The screen gets so cluttered and intrusive with all the bright logos.
If WVEC puts it in the far corner, that will be a plus.
Hopefully, it will also be transparent, but I think that is asking too much.

The new set looks very nice on WVEC
I recorded it last night and watching it now.

Finally.....some sharp HD studio shots.
Looks like the channel bug is even bigger than channel 3 and 10's and it is not in the corner as VARTV speculated. It is still inside the 4:3 frame.
I guess we will never forget about those 4:3 viewers or which channel we are tuned to.

Anyway...nice to have all 3 local newscasts in HD now.

During the news, the bug was in the 4:3 safe... don't know why. During shows like WOF and J!, a transparent bug is in the far lower righthand corner...

10, 43 and 13 (and Channel 2/WUND) are no longer sending out a 4:3 picture (as of August 1). Analog viewers on Cox, DirecTV, etc are now seeing a window boxed picture. There is no reason to keep stuff in the 4:3 title safe area...

I just checked, it's coming in fine here in the Foxhill area of Hampton. Signal strength is strong. I'm using an antenna mounted in the attic.

Does anybody know if WTKR is adding a sub channel or has done something to their feed? Picture doesn't look as sharp and am seeing macro blocking on high motion scenes now.

Not seeing the blocking, but have been ready to call lack of sharpness just another problem with these tired old eyes. So, maybe problem is area wide, but local in origin. Will have to ask son who is on COX.

I don't see the blocking very much, but it is there a little bit. The sharpness is pretty bad. We know it is happening on Vz and OTA, if you could find out about Cox that would be good. I have an email into the engineer over there. He fixed a 5.1 surround sound issue for me a few years ago and told me to contact him with any other issues....

That's too bad, although I suspect the bitrate hasn't changed, I feel like something with the equipment is putting an effect on the picture, it almost looks like a gaussian blur effect from Photoshop.

Son says he doesn't see any problems on COX - based on his looking Thursday night. Not the best source, but he's mine.

Friend in P'town has Cox and said the same thing, didn't notice any issues.

There's a thread over on DSLReports talking about Verizon now compressing several channels, am wondering if they are doing it to locals now.
