Ah -- RFD-TV. If that channel was available OTA, my Mother would drop Dish in a heart-beat. It's the only channel she cares about ... and the only reason she pays for the absolute lowest package available on Dish.

Unfortunately -- they don't have OTA coverage. The only one I was aware of was the unique situation in Alexandria with Selective TV, Inc - where a selection of cable channels were available via OTA subscription. I'm not sure it is even available with them anymore. At least, it's not listed on their channel list any longer.

Edit: Actually it may be still on there. The listing of RUR/FN may refer to a multi-cast of RFD and their FamilyNet channel.

From Tripp's database:

Minnesota is a hotbed of RFD-TV OTA popularity!

RFD-TV is no longer available OTA in Alexandria, and I would be a bit surprised if it were still on the air in the other places. When the network reached the agreement to be placed on Dish Network, access via non-traditional means was tightened. For instance, the C-band distribution feed of the network used to be unencrypted and available freely to anyone with a 6 foot or larger satellite dish. However, once Dish got the network, encryption was turned on and essentially any option to watch the network for free was switched off.

The Alexandria translator that did carry RFD before the signal was encrypted switched to RFD's sister network Rural TV for a time. The last time I was in Alexandria, in December, though, that had been replaced with a public access type of channel. Which reminds me, Trip, I've been meaning to send you updated TSReader exports for the Alexandria translators...

Now I'm confused. The Escape and Grit Facebook pages say that Escape is on 4.6 and Grit is on 4.7. Is the last listing that was posted here still accurate?

Okay. I've updated the listing on RabbitEars based on what's been posted here. Does it look accurate at the moment?

I am surprised that conditions of the sale from Gray didn't require them to use a virtual channel other than 4, as VNL still uses the "KX4" branding for its CBS stream - and most cable systems still put the CBS stream on "4".

Anyone know what WeatherNation expects from affiliates?
A 24/7 live person weather channel might be enough to convince more people to "cut the cord"

WeatherNation isn't live. Its on a loop. Usually its a 4 hour loop but later at night it can be up to 6 hours.
Every 10 minutes (on the 5's) there is a pretaped local forecast. Usually its from the affiliate that has the subchannel (like here in Minneapolis its on KARE 11). Sundays (until 5PM) the forecast is done by the WXNation folks

OK, so they don't have like a "WeatherStar" type machine option that will generate local forecast graphics from NOAAPORT data.

Here is an example of a WeatherNation affiliation agreement. The local station can do 3 minutes of local weather 6 times per hour, but they're on their own as far as generating graphics and data for these segments.

PSIP channels are assigned by the FCC and go along with the license, so they get to keep virtual channel 4. I think many in the market will be surprised to find out that there is still a channel 4.

So, two 4.1s? Or will KRDK use 38.1?

KRDK (formerly KXJB) is using 4-x, Gray put CBS on KVLY's signal at 11-2, but has retained the KX4 branding to this date.

For Trip, Jon and others keeping score, there is still no "Movies!" stream on channel 38...Making the assumption that it will be on 4-4 as listed on the Movies! website.

I spoke with my father last night. My parents live in the country NW of GF. My father had heard about the new KRDK channels and wanted assistance in programming them in as he had particular interest in Cozi and Grit. Over the phone - there was no problem talking him through it on the living room TV. However - in their bedroom, they are still using an old TV with the same GE coupon-eligible converter device they got during the analog shut-off. Running the auto-scan produced no results on the GE box. Over-the-phone, I didn't want to get into a deep diagnostic discussion - especially since I'm going to be back in Fargo from the cities next week and can drive up there next weekend.

If I remember the GE box correctly - in addition to auto scan there was a manual scan option where you could enter the true channel and scan individual channels. But I wasn't 100% sure of it - at least not sure enough to go into it on the phone.

But what I suspect is happening has to do with PSIP data -- or rather the lack of it. They are fortunate where they live in that signal strength has never been a problem. Out in the country with no trees around, they get fantastic signal. Hell - even the crappy infomercial 'Clear TV' antenna wedged into molding in the living room corner - hidden behind the TV - is actually plenty of antenna to pull in a strong, stable picture on their channels. (I know ... I know. A summer project is going to be a small outdoor antenna for them that will simply feed both TV's). The bedroom is using VHF/UHF rabbit ears antenna (with even better reception strength numbers). So when I get up there next week - I'm fairly certain that signal strength is not going to be an issue. But PSIP could be - with the lack of it gumming up the old box when trying to lock in the channel.

Could somebody up there confirm that KRDK is still not transmitting any PSIP data? I'm wondering if I should just get a different box right away -- or if the station is near to making it 'official'. I mean - they've been on the air now for a little bit. Or perhaps there is still work to do with correcting the issues like the volume and poor aspect ratios? The addition of the program info would likely fix the problem with the box - as they are happy and comfortable with using it and would prefer not trading it out if they don't have to.

Heard from family that Cozi is not on 4-2 at the moment. But rather, what appears to be a menu screen from a Manhattan brand receiver. (http://www.manhattan-digital.net/) Will be back up there Friday night. Any update on whether PSIP is still missing (as I suspect)?

It shows the operators haven't been monitoring their signals....I see that type of screen a lot on many LPTVs (especially like 3ABN), when there has been a power surge, storm, etc.. If you have a full power broadcast facility, maybe you should make an investment in an UPS for the satellite receivers.

I agree but most of these LP's have no presence other than the tower. Minneapolis is a great example of that
-channel 50 is "the walk" and you will see a raindrop and "no signal" on the screen or they had a frozen picture for almost a week
-WUMN 17 Univison. Their picture looked like HELL for months. looked like an analog picture and the volume blew your neighbors out of their seats. E-Mails to the corporate (Ft Myers) went unreturned but a couple weeks ago they FINALLY fixed it

-I remember in the analog days seeing a Dish Network screen of "acquiring satellite signal" when it rained hard on some of the LP's

Krdk

Just a note that Cozi is back on 4-2 (38.2). There is PSIP being transmitted as call letters appear and virtual channels numbers are correct, but no program guide data and I think there are issues with PSIP stream. I can't get TSREADER (free version, running in Linux) to work with my HDHomeRun at the moment, but running the output to VLC, VLC recognizes the following in the transport stream: 4-2 (38.2), 4-5 (38.5), 4-6 (38.6), but it doesn't see 4-1 in the stream, even though all my TVs see the infomercial channel on 4-1
