I was having more trouble than usual picking up WSMV last night. Does anyone know if the problem was on their end?

Reagan,

I am trying to get WBKO in Springfield which is about 45 miles from their transmitter. The FCC website says that they are at about 60kw of power, where in Kentucky are you that you can get WBKO?

Hi Alex,

I'm right in Bowling Green, so it's pretty easy for me. I've talked to some of the station guys and they tell me they get viewing reports from people near Nashville. Of course, there's no telling just how near "near" means. But given your location, you should have a good chance unless there's some interference from a closer, stronger station messing things up (I checked the FCC website for that and nothing looks like a likely candidate). Or it could be an adjacent channel - our local PBS analog on 24 interferes with me getting Nashville's digital WB on 23.

WB wasn't in HD for Smallville tonight.

Any idea why HD only works part of the time on that station? Or does it just not work between 7 and 8 PM?

We've had no known problems at WSMV this week.

Ragged Edge: I've seen WBKO in Pleasant View but only during unusual DX conditions. My antenna is pretty low though. WPSD in Paducah is the most often-seen out-of-town station here.

Well, after a lot of pain and misery trying to get an antenna working, I'm going to take a completely different approach.

I'm ordering Voom.

Now why would I order yet another content provider and one that's on death watch? Primarily for the fact that they will do the install for me, including the antenna for a $1. Monthly charges will be about $50, but I'll just take their full service and pare DirecTV down to just the basics + locals (about $42) for the time that I have Voom. Then, if the news reports are correct, Voom will be dead within 60 days and I'll still have my antenna.

The installer should be here next Friday. I'll let the group know how it works out. I'll make sure they bring the best Winegard directional Yagi antenna they have in stock and not even bother with the base model.

That's the whole point. I'm counting on Voom dying or being sold off. It was one of the ways I was able to sell this idea to my wife.

Well, it looks like I was right....Voom is going down. Their satellite was sold to Echostar yesterday. The only question now is whether they will cancel new installs before they put the antenna on my roof next Friday.

I suspect it's gonna be close....

I suppose this isn't the most anticipated news in Nashville DTV history, but just to be complete...

It looks like WPGD-DT has had a substantial power increase. As in, I'm able to see them here in Pleasant View... They've had special temporary authority to run 400 watts (?!) from an antenna on their analog tower on Rt. 109 about five miles north of Gallatin; I've had occasion to turn on a TV at the base of that tower and believe it has been on the air for a few years.

Tonight, they're coming in over here in Cheatham Co. for the first time. They have a modified construction permit for 264 kilowatts from the same tower as Pax, adjacent to the Sinclair tower northwest of town.

Four virtual channels:

50-1 "WPGD D1" parallel to their analog signal on channel 50, "TBN" religion
50-2 "WPGD D2" "The Church Channel". Similar to 50-1 but not parallel.
50-3 "WPGD D3" "JCTV" Christian music videos.
50-4 "WPGD D4" "TBN Enlace USA", in Spanish.

Best I can tell with my SD display, none of this is in HD.

Anyone picking up WTVF DTV OTA yet? I talked to the engineer Thursday and they were supposed to have it fixed by that evening or Friday morning. Still no signal from them yet. Anyone else?

Thanks.

Thanks, Tim

Yes, I checked the OTA signal a couple of times this week and got a good lock, although the signal strength is low. How far are you from the tower? I'm about 20 miles east.

BTW, is the subchannel 5-2 ever coming back?

Someone at the station is slow to pull the switch, or so it seems. Twice, I have seen programs start in 4:3 and go widescreen HD twenty minutes later. Go figure.

I'm in Spring Hill which is about 17 miles south of Franklin. I've been getting a very reliable signal until they had problems. So if they are only up with low power chances are I won't be getting them till they are up 100%.

I don't know about 5-2. I'd always gotten it in the past. Couldn't tell ya now though.

Thanks, Tim

What's "Strong" (% signal strength) and what antenna are you using. I live in Wyngate Estates and I'm pulling 64-66%. I used to get 72% pretty reliably. I'm not using the best antenna in the world and may need to upgrade. I've got an attic mounted radio shack 15-2185.

Thanks..

I do have a Radio Shack pre-amp but I can tune most of the channels in without, some actually have a better signal without it sometimes, channel 5 being one that is usually better without it although with it the signal is fine as well.

Just wanted to pass along the info to anyone in the Spring Hill area I leave near the Kroger.
!

What signal strength levels are you getting on FOX and CBS with this set-up? I live in Wyngate behind Kroger BTW.

ok.. a stupid question. bear with me please. Can I pick up channel4 on a UHF antenna such as the DB4 from Antennasdirect? (http://DUBDUB DUB.antennasdirect.com/db4_bow.htm)... or do I need something for the VHF reception? Would the DB4 be better for 35mi away reception and would the gain be enough or should I still consider a pre-amp?

back to the game....

thanks for any help btw...

currently 64% on fox using ATi HDTV card
attic antenna...(see above post).
Everything looks fine at 64%, but not real happy with a D.

I mostly use DTV for HD and Comcast for HD locals via cablecard in my HD set. I have a huge antenna in my attic and a coax run down to my TV. I've played around with it some but the reults are inconsistent concerning getting digital signals. The last time I tried, a month or so ago, I could get 2-1 and 4-1 but that was about it. I just tried today and now I only get 58-1. I really would like to get 17-1 as that is the only channel I can't get via Comcast in HD. I read on this thread that 58-1 and 17-1 are on the same tower... why can I get one and not the other? I live in Brentwood and am currently not using any type of amp. I had tried a pre-amp in the past but again, it was inconsistent.

Thanks in advance

The DB4 is a 4-bay UHF only bow-tie similar to the Channel Master 4221. At bottom of this web page is a test of various UHF-only antennas on VHF. In general they aren't good. The only one that had positive gain was the Channel Master 4228.

http://www.hdtvprimer.com/ANTENNAS/comparing.html

However I use an attic-mounted 4221 and Channel Master Spartan preamp, and from 1.5 mi S of Franklin I get all Nashville UHF channels plus VHF WSMV-DT channel 10 at above 90%.

But other posters have much larger antennas and live closer, yet have worse reception. It's highly variable based on the geography of your area.

In general at 35 mi I'd suggest the CM 4228 or DB8. Your cable losses are about 5 db per 100 ft of RG-6. Unless your cable run is very short I'd recommend the Channel Master 7777 preamp.

If you get the antenna locally from Randolph I think you can return if it doesn't work. You could try a 4221 and if that doesn't work try a preamp or 4228.

I live in Wyngate also but closer to Duplex Rd. I use the Samsung SIR T151 HDTV tuner and a Channelmaster 3018 antenna with a Channel Master 3041DSB amplifier. Antenna is on the roof facing North. The Samsung doesn't show a percentage of reception but it is displayed on a horizontal bar graph. WTVF comes in at a little past the center of the bar graph which I would estimate around 60% as does WSMV, WB, UPN, PBS, PAX. WKRN comes in real strong at about 80% I would say. But I don't understand why the hell I can't get Fox. I have managed to pull them in before at at least 50% a couple times but most times I can't pull it in. It is supposedly on the same tower as WB. And I get the WB just fine. Ticks me off.

To pull in WSMV you may need an antenna like my CM 3018. Go to Lowes website and you'll find it and the amplifier there. With this setup you shouldn't have any problems pulling in WSMV.

Hey I'll trade ya PAX reception for Fox reception! Ha!

Thanks, Tim

After hooking up my 7777, I went from 2 channels down to none. This is getting pretty frustrating. I quess a new antenna is next. Is there any reason my signal would have gotten weaker with the amp? How do you troubleshoot a preamp to know that it's doing what it is supposed to do?

You can unplug the preamp power while watching a station. The signal should greatly weaken or vanish entirely. If not the preamp may not be working correctly.
