I am in the Percy Priest Lake area, and I can pick up FOX with an indoor Silver Sensor antenna. I have had problems with FOX using just a plain "rabbit ears" antenna (but I could pick up ABC and CBS fairly well with it). If you don't have one, Sears sells them if you want to try it out. You just have to point it around till you get a good signal.

I'm getting FOX in HD OTA. (well I did get it until I sent my sony 34xs955 back to Circuit City. I'm waiting on a 960 from ABT)

I'm not to far from you, but I think you might have a few more hills to overcome than I do. I am in Oak Hill between Woodmont Blvd, Harding, Franklin Rd. and Lealand Ln.

I tried a channel master 4221. It worked well but 17 dropped out a few times for a split second over the week that I tested it because of multi-path. I was worries it would be even worse when the leaves come back so I took it back and got the CM 4248 Yagi. It is better with blocking out multi-path which was causing 17 to drop out on me. I did not have any drop outs with the 4248 for the week that I used it.

I have the 4248 mounted in my attic and I purchased it at Randolph and Rice for $47. The 4221 was only $23 at R&R.

Dogmanky, let me know your results with the DB8. I will be moving in the neighborhood soon and I would like to get everything up and running with as little headaches as possible. Do you think that multi directional, like the DB8 or directional antennas are better for Spring Hill?

Stephen,
NBC is the only vhf signal in Nashville, and the Silver Sensor is a UHF antenna. It still picks up NBC's signal, but it is so weak that it probably won't lock onto it.

I can't get mine to work with NBC either, and I have also tried a cheap UHF/VHF combo antenna from Radio Shack.

I would think that there is some indoor antenna that would pick up NBC, but I haven't found it yet.

They broadcast all day, most of time upconverted from SD source with black bars on sides.

It depends on the signal strength of NBC in your room. I used Silver Sensor to get stable signal of NBC (VHF10) at some spots in my house in Franklin. Different channel frequencies have different hot spots. You need to move your antenna around to see if you could find a spot that is good for all channels.

For Stephen's location, NBC comes from a different direction than all the other local stations. You need to check if there is something blocking that direction.

Silver Sensor is one of the best. Some people claim the double tow-tie from RS (Catalog #: 930-0998) is better, although more people claim the other way around. You may use CM4221 as an indoor antenna if its shape doesn't bother you. A person on the Internet said he put it on a coat hanger in his closet and got perfect results. I used it indoor for a week.

Will do! I'm not sure what works best but I get fairly good signals from the Radio Shack 15-2185 currently in my attic. I'll update the group with my results from the DB8/CM7777 combo. It's scheduled to be delivered today, so I'll probably try it out tonight. I like living dangerously.

Well... I got the DB8 / CM7777 combo installed and it's not as a dramatic improvment as I hoped for. Allot of it is most likely due to it being in my attic and not on the roof. I may go for a roof mount on a tripod this summer if the leafs affect me enough.

Comapring the RS15-2185 with the DB8/CM7777... my results are as follows: For ~ $80 upgrade I now can rotate (manually go up in the attic) the antenna and get 80%+ on every Network, however leaving the antenna a static location, I have to compromise at least 1 channel. The good news is all come in good and locked ... even if 66%-ish on signal. I can tell a slight improvement on the pre-amp .. but not much.

The radio shack is honestly as good an antenna considering the price ... but I did go from mid 60's ---> mid 80's on CBS, I think I'll keep the DB8/7777 up and just live with the fact I may have to take a 5 min break to rotate the antenna and tweak a little to get the best of all worlds.

Channel 4 seems to be the oddball with this setup. I pull FOX and CBS 80-85% and NBC drops to 50% and very borderline. SO I have to strike a balance which leaves NBC at 64-66% but everything else is as strong or quite a bit stronger as in the case of CBS (5 WTVF @ 85%).

I hope all of you are enjoying the Super Bowl now. This latest development apparently has cooled down the traffic of this thread.

Anyone know what's up with Channel 5 tonight? I came up about 9 to watch CSI and no Channel 5 at all....

I'm guessing they are just off the air again but wanted to check and see if it is just me.

Thanks.

Can someone give me the novice explanation of why WTVF was showing up on channel 56.1 tonight instead of channel 5.1? I just thought it was odd that 5.1 was showing good on my signal meter but the receiver was telling me "no signal."

xyz - in case you missed CSI, it was ok but the direction was freaky. It was like a new director was trying to make it look extra flashy tonight. It got irritating.

durl,

WTVF must be doing some sort of overhaul of their PSIP data because I have the same problem with both of my boxes. Maybe it'll be fixed by tonight.

Edit: It worked perfectly last night - even for my Samsung box.

I don't know if anyone else has noticed, but the past few days, on WSMV-DT Dolby Digital 5.1 seems to be a lot better. The dialog is now coming through the center channel like it suppost to, while the music and other effects are coming through the left and right channels. It's a noticeable improvement in my home theater. Not all the shows on NBC are in DD 5.1, but the ones that are, now sound a lot better.

WSMV-DT audio was sure screwed up on ER last Thursday. My center channel cut out, then came back, then had echoes.

dogmanky,

I didn't have any problem on Fox from 6:00-7:30 last night. Stopped watching after that.

adam,
That's good to hear about WSMV's audio. I haven't checked the 5.1 mix in ages.

There was a problem with the HD satellite receiver. Some settings got "unset". We hope but cannot guarantee it won't happen again. We can guarantee it won't take so long to figure out if it does happen again!

We have also lit up our program guide information this (Tuesday) afternoon. We believe the clock is off slightly. (no more than 90 seconds) Hopefully this can be fixed tomorrow.

Great!

I recently have problems receiving WSMV-DT. For my house, NBC and ABC are at the same direction. In the past, signals from WSMV-DT were very stable (7 out of 10 on Samsung SIR-T451), while those from ABC and PBS were affected by weather a lot. But starting about 10 days ago, signals of WSMV-DT began to show macroblocks and sound drops quite often, several times every minute, making it unwatchable. At the same time, ABC and PBS were very good. I was wondering if the problem is on the station side (low power?), or due to interference along the path. Thanks!

Our transmitter power has been reliable - I don't think it's varied more than 1% since we turned it on - so that's not the problem. We've had fiber link problems in the past which have caused dropouts but I'm not seeing that right now.

Hard to say what is. I don't know of any likely interference sources that would last for ten days. Is there any possibility anything has changed with your antenna? (are you using an outdoor antenna that might have been affected by high winds?) Because of the difference in frequency, antenna issues that don't affect the other stations might affect us. (also, in Franklin you're closer to the ABC/PBS tower)

Do you have a way of hooking an analog receiver to that antenna? How's PBS analog reception? Compared to analog Fox?

Thanks, Doug.

I use an outdoor antenna (CM4221). I just hooked up my indoor antenna (Silver Sensor) with my tuner and found a good spot for WSMV-DT inside the house. The signal was strong and stable (7-8 out of 10). Now I think the problem may be multipath. A few houses are being built several hundred feet away from my house in that direction. They are not high. But they could have generated some strange paths for WSMV-DT to arrive to my antenna. My tuner tends to show stable signal at level 4-5 out of 10. But for NBC, it is 6 out of 10 and still has drop outs. This seems to indicate multipath is the problem.

That would certainly be a reasonable guess. (oh for the old days when there wasn't much metal in a house) It's a bit of a pain to have more than one antenna (I've had separate VHF and UHF antennas since before there was digital) but sometimes that's the most reliable way to watch.

You can hope that when the new homes are complete the multipath situation will change and you can go back to the 4221... It's also possible that moving it up or down a few inches on the mast will clear up WSMV without hurting any of the other channels. But I'd mark the mast to be sure you can get it back where it was if necessary.
