I have a real antenna. I can get the local channels in my main TV viewing area OTA - at least most of them (CW gives me problems...). Still - I will not put a huge antenna on my roof nor go through the cost and time of installing one in the attic. Since DirecTV provides my locals in HD, this was not even an issue. If it stops, then I'll just quit watching ABC and NBC. Life goes on.
If Hearst or Raycom wants to put a satellite into orbit, put the infrastructure in place to uplink their signal and then send it back to us, and charge me $3.50 a month - I'll gladly pay them. But they don't and DirecTV does.
Like I said - this is just the beginning. If DirecTV caves, then when Dish, or uVerse, or Comcast is up for renewal - watch out...
As much as I hate big government, there is a reason that the FCC is looking into these types of negotiations. DirecTV has stated they will not take the channels off the air unless the station owners force them to. If the channels go dark, you know who to blame. We'll see if 'Building our station around you' is a true motto or not...
