Ok, then it's $161 total. I guess that is about on par with my level. It's $33 more.

.
.
Free, abundant OTA television separates this country from many others. ATSC1 has only been in force since 2009. The wireless industry has enough spectrum. Enough of 'planned obsolesce'.

What pleases me is that the price is about the same as the prior year, but with the addition of the enhanced DVR (from the basic), EPIX, and Ultimate internet

Adding to the current discussion for comparison, my DirecTV statement for June shows a total of $119. So, two TV's, two whole-home HD DVR's, fairly high level channel package, an 'extra pack' of about 5 'specialty' HD stations, the protection plan, the ability to watch TV on my iPhone/iPad, and in season NFL Sunday Ticket (~$300/year price not shown above and paid over 6 months). I LOVE NFL Sunday Ticket! Be aware, to have a TV/Internet package like you guys are talking about, I have to add in ~$65/month for TWC 'Extreme' internet - making the total ~$185 - again, not counting NFL Sunday Ticket. DirecTV's service is more reliable than TWC was when I last had it (2005), picture and sound very good (better than TWC was) and the capability to record up to eight channels simultaneously, watch two football games at once by setting up live buffers are all very well done.

I'm going to miss DirecTV. We'll soon see how much.

I'm going to be anxious to see your report in a couple of months. You had prior experience with TWC, very recent long term experience with DirecTV, and now going back to TWC.

Your comments will be some of the more meaningful ones on here when you've had a chance to compare

Larry, that's what I was looking at 5 years ago. I went to the DirecTV site and price out a package over a 24 month history - taking in the lower prices and the regular prices and averaging them out. I then called, asked what it would cost with only internet and then they asked me if I was changing. I told them I was considering it. then transferred me to a retention specialist and I said that I could save (whatever). He told me that the sat companies had cheap rates for the first few months and then I told him that I had taken the price for the two year commitment and averaged it out. He took about 15 minutes and came back with a much better price.

This year, about two or three years later, when the price went up, I called and asked for a retention specialist and again got the price down.

I notice that your bill is about $60 a month higher than mine and I have what you have plus the enhanced DVR, Starz, and Epix.

Call them and see what you can do. At $160 for what I have, I am happy. I was so pissed when my price hit that $210+ mark a few years ago.

BTW, was thinking of you the other day; stopped by Pinnacle Liquor and picked up a nice, inexpensive Pinot Noir - right down the street from you

I do actually have the 6 tuner enhanced DVR plus HBO. So basically I have one less premium than you. I have done the retention tango on multiple occasions over the years. TWC decided not to give in this latest time even when I went up the CSR ladder. I am going to wait and see what happens with Charter and the packages they offer. If I could get Greenlight Networks to build out on my road, I would have some leverage. They keep building all over Brighton, but haven't gotten near us.

Like Lee, I would love to go back to Directv for NFL Sunday Ticket alone. I have however no clear shot of the southern sky anymore for dish placement. So I am pretty much stuck. I have found though that the NFL Redzone channel (part of the $10 Sports Package) is pretty good for keeping up with all of the games with no commercials.

Yep, Pinnacle is our go to Liquor store. No surprise there. It can get dangerous though, I often find very expensive bottles of single malt Scotch and rum.

I had the same problem. After multiple negotiations over the years, TWC finally stopped working with me. I think they have even less incentive now. We will have to see how the Charter takeover settles out.

Larry,

Actually two less premiums - I have HBO, Showtimes, Starz, and Epix

My last negotiation was just a couple of months ago and I just kept repeating that I didn't want to leave, but I was prepared to. One of the previous times I tweeted on their site that they were $60 more than DirecTV and refused to even talk to me about my price. I got a response in 10 minutes.

Keep after them Larry - that money is so much better spent on wine or single malt scotch.

First thoughts being back with TWC

After being away from TWC and with DirecTV since 2005, I've now been back with TWC for two weeks. My theater-room system isn't set back up yet, so no sound comparison yet. But I've had a chance to see how the Whole Home DVR works in comparison to what I'm used to at DirecTV.

Top Line answer? It's not as bad as it used to be but not as good as DirecTV's DVRs. As always, when switching, there are some things I already know I miss.

For instance, although I can FF through commercials, there is no 30-second skip or 30-second slip available. Skip just jumps ahead 30 seconds per button push with no video on the screen. Slip essentially does a 30-second FF burst with each button push. When coupled with the 6 second jump-back, it is a very quick way to get through shows without ever seeing any commercial content at all. I used skip all the time. Most shows group 30 or 60-second commercials together. With 30-second skip, 6 quick button pushes puts you 3 minutes ahead very, very quickly.

Another thing I really enjoyed is dual-buffering. It allowed me to watch two live football games at once. You set up the buffers and then pause the one you're not watching (which keeps recording) and jump to the other -- which has been recording in the background. Then, I can use the 30-second skip - which almost perfectly matches play timing and makes quick work of commercials and I'm never far behind on either game.

Even though I can now record 6 shows at once, I used to be able to record 8 at once with my two DVRs -- and if I got more DVR's, I could have handled even more.

I also liked the flexibility on the DVR regarding the number of recorded shows recorded I can keep in a series. I can now record either seven or several number below that or ALL of them. With DirecTV, I can record 10 before I'm forced to ALL. I also had the ability to mark individuals shows (Series or not) as 'KEEP' so they aren't deleted when they normally would have been. KEEP shows aren't counted in the series limit you set.

Searches: Previous show/actor searches are not kept for fast retrieval. DirecTV keeps them until you delete them. TWC also has no 'keyword' search capability - or at least I haven't found it yet. So, since we're out of regular season for primetime shows, I cannot do a keyword search for "Blindspot" so that when it returns to the schedule in the future it automatically records. I can't do a keyword search for 'Vietnam' so that when any show in the future with the word Vietnam in the title or show description comes up, it'll record.

So, what's good? The picture looks OK - good in most cases. As good? Close I'll say. Definitely not better. The DVR seems reliable so far too. It most definitely was not in early 2005.

More with more time and when the home theater set up happens - or when I think of more.....

I went a different direction. Greenlight Networks is building out in our neighborhood, finally. Dropped the television part of my package and will be dropping Charter all together when I finally have fiber to my house.

Quick question: does anyone know if CBS and/or Fox are still unencrypted on QAM? Moving back to Rochester for just a few months and I'll be in a location where I probably won't be able to get great antenna reception (no line of site, no outdoor options, and the wall facing the towers has several more apartments through it). I've already got internet on order from TW; curious to see if I'll be able to plug in to get the news and some Bills games or if I'll have to add on another $15-20 a month for that.

Here in Batavia all of the locals are still unencrypted so you should be able to get cbs & fox with your TV's qam tuner. Make sure you do a channel scan when you hook up your tv because time warner sometimes move some of the qam channels to different spots and the TV's tuner won't know the new physical location of those channels until you do a channel scan.

Where & when did you hear time warner will be encrypting the clear qam channels?

The FCC changed the rules in October 2014 to allow cable companies to encrypt local channels (to avoid "theft of service"),

https://www.fcc.gov/document/commiss...on-prohibition

TWC (or Charter) can start to encrypt anytime that they want after they have converted to an all-digital system.

I've never heard anything from time warner about all of the qam channels being encrypted but I did hear on here a while back that time warner may get rid of the analog channels so I asked time warner earlier in September if that was true when I called them to get a new promotion and the customer support rep was surprised to hear that I still had analog channels & they didn't know if what I read on here was true or not. Since I couldn't get a new promotion over the phone I went to my local cable store & after they finally gave me a new promotion the guy behind the counter didn't know if time warner was actually going to get rid of the analog channels around here so he asked his supervisor and the supervisor told me as far as he knows tw didn't have plans to get rid of the analog channels here. He did mention that if tw did remove any of the analog channels they would somehow notify us in advance.

Help! On Demand Not Working Correctly

Tonight(Monday Night) I was trying to watch Ghost Adventures on demand and I noticed the on demand portal wasn't working correctly because every time I went to networks it would say "Currently Unavailable Please try again later". So I rebooted my cable box and the problem continued. All of the other categories like movies, TV shows and premiums was still working normally. All of the other free on demand channels including start over and look back are still working normally so I'm assuming the on demand portal is having a loading issue. After I finally watched my show I went back to the on demand portal & noticed it was working again until I started clicking on random networks and noticed some of them didn't show any programing so I rebooted my cable box again and now some networks in the on demand portal work and others don't. I hope this issue resolves itself but if anybody else with time warner notices the same issue on there cable box please let me know.

P.S. Just saw on downdetector.com that time warner is definitely having issues tonight and Rochester is one of the areas marked as having issues.

I had this issue occur a two or three times over the years. It always turned out to be the local "node", where it deciphers the SDV channels. Each time they would require me to set up an appointment, that they needed to send someone out, would never believe me when I have said it happened before and they just needed to refresh the node down the street,

They would always call back within an hour or two with the problems fixed and telling me that I didn't need to keep the appointment.

That's explains my on demand trouble last night. One of the nodes near me probable needed a refresh. Happy to report the problem fixed itself last night because this morning the on demand portal was 100% back to normal. With TW it's easy to believe that they would make you setup an appointment just to have the node refreshed because I know from experience that most of there customer support people don't know what there doing.

I have an SATA external drive from Apricorn that is several years old. It was given to me by our follow forum member Lokilarry. I had used it for an SA 8300 DVR from TWC. I no longer use this drive and after checking with Lokilarry, I am offering it at no charge to any member who would like it. I'm not offering delivery, but if my location (Fairport) is an issue, I'm sure we can meet somewhere in between.

I do not know if it currently works with the SA8300 or any other DVR, but at the price, you may want to try it.

Let me know if you want it

Have them meet you at Starbucks and buy you a cup of joe. Still a small price for an eSATA drive.

TWC and ROKU - how slow have I been?

I just purchased a new TV to use in a guest room re-purposed as a den. I bought a 48 inch LED TCL/Roku Smart TV based solely on Amazon reviews and price - price being the biggest factor since it cost $328.65. I was going to hook up a TWC digital adapter, but the closest cable outlet is on another wall and 18 feet away, so I figured when I had time I would call them to schedule an appointment to move the outlet ( for aesthetics). I proceeded to program the TV and enter my passwords for existing services such as Netflix and Amazon.

Stumbled across a TWC Spectrum channel (app?), so I logged in using my TWC credentials. Shocked, Shocked - all my channels, including HBO, STARZ, Showtime, EPIX showed up on the guide - same guide I see on my cable box, and all the channels tune in. I disconnected the antenna I had just plugged in - no need obviously, since everything is there on TWC.

I can't believe that I have been so brain dead not to know about this. I used my main TV (a SONY) for Netflix and Amazon, which are already in the smart tv menu. I never used a ROKU before and had no clue that I could access my TW channels.

BTW, the picture quality and the ease of use of the TCL are very good - well worth the $328!

Larrude congrats on the new smart tv. Looks like you can return that digital adapter to time warner cable and save a few dollars on your bill. You won't find the twc tv app on all smart TV's because twc's site says the app is available on android and apple devices, Roku devices like your new tv, Samsung smart TV's, amazon tablets, xbox one and xbox 360 plus your computers web browser.

Also wanted to mention to all Time Warner TV Customers that I got a letter from them today saying QVC and NBC Sports Network will require a cable box or digital adapter starting December 1st because it won't be available in analog format after that date. The letter also said anybody who has a tv connected to cable without a box can get 1 HD Box free for 12 months. You'll have to call them or visit a cable store and ask for you free cable box if you want it.

This change doesn't affect me because my main tv already has a hd box and the only channels I watch on the bedroom tv are the locals and the weather channel so I don't need a box on that tv.

Well Netflix closed its local office at the end of November. All my discs are coming from Columbus now, taking twice as long. I used to be able to get about 12 discs a month, but it will probably be down to 8. I'll probably end up canceling, but now that I have Atmos! How long will it take the streaming services to send out better audio?
