HR24/AM21 receivers don't scan, they use data downloaded from DirecTV's database for "enabling" local stations in the guide. If the data isn't present in the guide when downloaded, it won't show up.

Try resetting the system and redoing the setup, perhaps with an alternate zip code closer to Sac.

I did a reset as suggested above and it did find 58.1 this time. However, it did not find 13.1, but did find 13.2 with a 100% signal strength. The 13.2 programming is the same as what is on 13, so I guess I'm good to go.

Does anyone know anything about Ch 10-4 PSIP Test0004 (rf 23)?

Apparently it belongs to Rf 23 KEZT and is airing Unimas.

It's interesting that your tuner is showing 13.2 and not 13.1. KOVR does not have a .2 sub-channel. You're good to go, but I thought you might like to know that your tuner is acting a bit weird. Your tuner should have also found 58.2 in addition to 58.1.

You can check my station list, linked below, for a look at all the stations in your area.

This is what I see on KEZT now:

23.1 - Univision HD
23.2 - Escape SD
23.3 - Bounce SD
23.4 - Escape SD
10.4 - UniMas HD

I don't know what's up with 10.4.

Hey guys. I've been having a tough time getting a solid signal with KIVE this month. I'm wondering if this is just a temporary thing with inversions or if I should try something new like adding some height.

Living room theater set-up:
AVR: Pioneer VSX-1124-K.
Speakers/Sub: (4) NHT Classic Two and an NHT TwoC center + PSA-XV15 subwoofer.

There have been no issues with KVIE here of any sort. I don't know why you've started having problems.

Thanks Chuck. I think I am just too far from the transmitter. Since PBS is important to me I think I'm going to do what I've been contemplating for so long now... I'm pointing er north to get KIXE.

KSCO 33 (rf 3) is looking at their multiplexer, and Telemundo SD on 33.4 should be returning to the air. No word on anything to replace Zuus Country on 33.3. Looks like it will stay silent/black, or be pulled off the air.

I received my copy of the September issue of the Worldwide TV-FM DX Association news magazine today. In the TV update section it showed the following changes for stations in Sacramento, Modesto, Monterey and Salinas:
Sacramento 3 KCSO-LD Power change to 3 kw on air
Modesto 49 K49EO Power change to 175 watts on air
Monterey 7 K07ZK Power request granted for 100w at 36-35-11/121-51-06
Salinas 15 K15CU Power change to 5.74 kw on air

Chuck... the entries for KCSO and K07ZK appear to be less power than what I have listed in my lists. Do you have any update on these stations?

KCSO recently filed for a License to Cover a Construction Permit for 3KW so I assume that is the end of the 5KW STA.

I also saw the request for 100w from K07ZK, a station that's not on the air yet.

KBTV-CD Ch. 51/Virtual 8.1 - 8.6 will be off the air starting Wed afternoon 9/3 and returning to air very late on Thursday 9/4, if everything goes as planned. Transmitter being changed to RF Channel 27 and new antenna and repairs to transmission line are scheduled to take place on the 4th. Like I said, if all goes as planned. So you all will need to rescan to find your Jimmy Swaggart on 8.3, I know all of you needed to know where to get your Sonlife Broadcasting Network...hahaha!

I actually don't get to participate in much of the conversion since I work full time at KOVR/KMAX.
Let me know after the station is back on the air as to your reception experiences.

Thanks

I was at upper bear last friday to do a narrowbanding job on a vhf repeater that has been out of service for a couple years and put it back in service; the noise floor across the board is -55db. Quite a few 2 way customers have moved off the site the past year due to poor radio performance.
I was there mostly for training, but the guy I was with is a whiz at the spectrum analyzer and said its no wonder they moved off the site. He showed me the vhf noise floor arcoss the board on the analyzer and it was -55dB.

Do you mean the KCSO transmitter site? -55dBm? That would be pretty awful!

This will be interesting. The new antenna pattern on 27 shows about 1 dB less power in my direction. KBTV is strong enough here on 51 to receive most of the time but there's too much interference from KDTV in Fremont. KDTV (51) is slightly stronger than KSTS (49) but KSTS has a much higher SNR. I assume this is due to no co-channel issues. When KBTV goes off I expect KDTV to jump up in SNR. I'll edit this post as soon as I see it off the air.

Since KEXT is off the air now, KBTV on RF 27 should be receivable most of the time. There's little competition from KTSF on Mt. San Bruno.

I guess it didn't go according to plan. The spectrum analyzer still shows KBTV on the air even though it's too weak for me to decode.

Chuck

Edit: Must have gone off last night sometime since it is off this morning.

Well things DID not go according to plans at all. KBTV-CD will be off the air one more day. Installers found that the antenna for EMF translator on 105.9 was not located in the correct place therefore our antenna did not fit correctly. The 105.9 antenna is being lowered slightly to make room.

KBTV should be back on the air sometime late Friday on RF ch.27.

I see KBTV on RF 27. I think it's about the same strength as KEZT on 23 which is what I would expect. I'm having a hard time determining the actually signal strength because I'm getting a lot of interference from KTSF on Mt. San Bruno. Conditions the last couple of days have been unusually good to Mt. San Bruno. There have been some strong temperature inversions so that really affects conditions. The low last night was 72 degrees while valley locations were reporting around 60 degrees.

I've attached a series of spectrum analyzer traces showing what the signal looks like. The first one is pointed to KTSF at 253 degrees, the second pointed halfway between KTSF and KBTV at 273 degrees, the third pointed at KBTV at 293 degrees and the fourth pointed at 300 degrees. The signal decodes at 300 degrees and sometimes at 273 degrees. I've never seen a situation where the signal got worse pointed at it. I assume that KTSF and KBTV are subtracting from each other causing the ugly display.

I'll have to wait until conditions to Mt. San Bruno go back to normal which is little or no signal from KTSF.

Chuck

It seems that KBTV isn't going to get any better. After 3 days it still seems to have a null pointed right at it. I have a set of back-up antennas on my other ham tower that are identical to the main antennas except that they're at 84' instead of 71'. For most stations the 71' antennas are in a more favorable location even though they are just 90' south of the others.

I decided to check KBTV on the back-up antennas. I didn't expect to see much of any difference because there are mostly minor differences between the antennas on any station. Well, this was not the case for KBTV which is about 20 dB stronger on the back-up antennas. I checked KEZT which I believe is right next to your antenna and there is little difference. See the attached spectrum analyzer displays below. Ant1 are the main antennas and Ant2 are the back-up antennas.

KBTV on the back-up antennas has been running 22-27 dB SNR. It'll take some time to see how reliable the signal is. I'm 58 miles from the transmitter.

Just when I think I've seen everything, I haven't.

Edit: Exceptional conditions this morning for stations on the valley floor. At 9 am KBTV was up to SNR 31 dB while every high level station was poor.

I've only had a few days to observe KBTV on 27 but as long I use the back-up antennas it's in most of the time. Not bad for a station that doesn't even show up on my TV Fool list.

I have not seen a License to Cover application filed by KBTV yet.

Chuck

Edit: KBTV filed a License to Cover today (9/12).

KVIE and KOVR Issues

Watched the Ken Burns show on KVIE last week and suffered through numerous drop outs and pixelations. Tonight during NCIS I completely lost KOVR. You'd think by now there wouldn't be all of these transmissions issues. I don't want cable but I may have to break down and sign up for U-verse just to be able to watch my OTA programs...

I watched a significant majority of the Ken Burns film and watched the first NCIS tonight and did not have any problems with either one of them OTA.

Sounds like you need antennas with more gain. I get both KVIE and KOVR here in San Francisco, on the other side of the East Bay hills, so you should have no problem in Martinez. What are you using for an antenna now?

I know this is frustrating but this is a problem with your location/antenna setup. I never have a problem with KVIE and the Roosevelt recordings were fine. Sometimes I have a problem with KOVR but last night was not one of them. All three primetime shows recorded without problems.

Maybe you'd like to post a link to your TV Fool report and describe your antennas? We might have some ideas.
