Last I saw an LG OTA only box. Did not ask what price but can't imagine it is too expensive.

The first IMAX on KMAX movie airs 6-7 PM on Sunday. Yes, that's Super Bowl Sunday.

Ocean Oasis is the title. Video is terrific but the local inserts from the IMAX theater in Sacramento are even better. This is the first of several IMAX movies on KMAX.

Movie and inserts will be played back on a Avid Air-Space HD server with backup on a Panasonic D5 HD VCR. All origination is from our Sacramento studio. The local inserts were taped with a Sony HDCam and edited on a Media 100 HD edit system, located at KVIE.

Could someone do me a favor and tune to 40.2 (KTXL D Spanish audio) to see if they get a signal? Another Voom subscriber and I in the same area aren't getting it right now.

Thanks!!!

I'm getting a signal now (1:24pm) on my HD-Tivo but not on my built-in on my TV.

Thanks! That's interesting that the internal TV tuner isn't getting it but the HD-Tivo is. I'm wondering if in the Voom subscribers case we're getting hit with this bug: Motorola VOOM STB Program Channel Paradigm Issues (link to SatGuys). Apparently it can affect other (non Moto) tuners as well (post #10 in the thread).

As far as I know, 40-2 was discontinued some time ago, right around the time FOX HD began. I believe the HD TiVo retains the channel info from whenever you last did a channel scan -- if you re-scan, I'll bet it will disappear.

I've noticed that the Sony tuner (the internal one) is much more sensitive to PSIP problems/changes than the HD-Tivo. I remember terrible problems with KVIE especially (bouncing from 53-1 to 6-1 and lather, rinse, repeat) I wonder if PSIP changes are a factor here?

Oops, just saw videojanitor's response - I'm rescanning now....Nope, 40-2 is still showing up on the Tivo.

Can I take you up on that bet now???

Tracey

ETA - to be fair, I cleared the scanned channels and then rescanned again. 40-2 does not show up on the list of channels received, but it is tunable (unlike, say, 40-3 which really doesn't exist) So I'm not sure what's going on. As long as 40-1 comes in clearly on Sunday, I'll be a happy camper.

I will certainly fire up my 811 for this. Please tell me Bob KMAX will be on Comcast very soon.

Are you saying the commercials will be replaced with your own HD studio inserts?

The local inserts involve one of our personalities (Mark S Allen) talking about the IMAX process, how the movie was made, etc., coming in and out of commercial breaks. The commercials for the first show will be upconverted from the analog side. The Mark S Allen inserts will be in absolutely beautiful HD. I have been watching HD for years now and it still takes my breath away to see this local stuff recorded with a Sony HDCam. We will have some commercials in HD in future IMAX movies.

Bob,

I'm looking forward to the IMAX specials. I'll set the TIVO so that it's recorded while I'm at a friend's SB party. I doubt the crowd will switch away from the game, at least it better not

Will these be every Sunday for a while? I should create a season pass if they are.

Really a bummer about "Enterprise." One of my few regular network viewings. I'm recording down-rezzed copies for my son who is in boot camp (can you believe the drill sergeants don't allow the recruits time off to watch Star Trek???!!).

Not so fast! I think the "problem" is that HD TiVo is getting its channel information from DirecTV (via Tribune Media Services), and they are still showing 40-2 as an available channel. I guess the HD TiVo is smart enough to see that it's not really there, and just tunes to 40-1 (though it SAYS it's on 40-2 .. I tried it myself and got the same result).

40.2 was indeed discontinued last September. To tune to Spanish audio, select the alternate audio on 40.1.

I wouldn't worry about it. Remember a few days ago when a power failure hit Walnut Grove? 40.1 was the *only* DTV station that stayed on the air. I think they'll put some effort into making sure that the highest-rated show of the year stays on.

Sorry if this is too much of a n00b question. I thought I read some where on the boards here that the OTA singal will be better than local cable QAM(compressed?) I have a choice between 40.1 OTA or QAM and just trying to decide if it really even matters.

ty all

Bob, ty for all the updates, I will be watching the IMAX presentation as well, after SB ofcourse

The HD cable signals are the same as the OTA signals.

You get to see the play sooner if you watch OTA. Comcast is delayed by close to a second with respect to the OTA.

Rory...the only problem with the one second is that it isn't enough time to make any bets! Any way to slow it down by about 10 seconds or so...I'll split the profits with you

In regard to installing an antenna in the attic of my Mom's house in Lincoln:

I got a CM 4221 antenna and it wouldn't work in the attic directly about the TV because the walls were foil lined. I then tested the line outside and was able to receive every HDTV channel without an issue. Before installing outside though, I did a test in the garage attic (attached to the house). There was no foil lining in the garage attic in the direction that the antenna was going to be facing, so I placed it and checked all of the HDTV channels...everything came in perfectly!!! So, I installed it in the garage attic and ran 50 feet of coax to the TV and she can now watch the Super Bowl in HDTV!

Just an update for those in Lincoln that had questions.

Dave

PS My Mom lives in Sun City up on one of the hills about 3/4 of the way off of Twelve Bridges Parkway and I think that helped being up so high. Those in the flatlands may have other issues.

Place your bet by watching the analog OTA while your patsy is watching QUAM. The delay is around three seconds or longer. Or, better yet, listen to the game on the radio (concealed earpiece), that should give you even more time.

Getting a great signal up here in Tuolumne on both KTXL and KTVU. Don't even have to rotate my antenna (radio shack uhf only, the big one) and CM amp.

Most, if not all, solid OTA signals will be somewhat better than the local cable company for a number of reasons, ymmv. In my case, 40.1 was rock solid all during the game, had to switch over to cable while I DVR'ed KMAX's IMAX program, the cable signal from Costcast was far less desirable than the OTA signal. Soft picture, breakups, etc.

Again, your mileage may vary.
