I've had no problems with WB18 at all.

What's the make and model of your STB/TV?

The few times I've emailed Joe Addalia at WB18 he's always gotten back to me within 24-48 hrs. Heck, one time he replied within the hour. They're easily making a bid in my book for best DTV station in our market.

Looks like WRBW UPN 65 is up to no good again. They have moved over their signal to 41-3 and 41-4 and they are not mapping correctly again. Both my HD DirecTivo and my Sony TV are showing nothing on 65-1 but do show it on 41-3. Aren't they supposed to be under compliance? Who can we file a complaint with? I would try and contact them directly but that has obviously done no good in the past.

This is all part of their secret plan to kill the transistion to digital by making their channel unwatchable.

Well I'll give WRBW credit. They have already fixed the mapping issue. Unfortunately their past reputation had made me prejudge them. Let's hope they keep up the good work. Maybe rebroadcasting Enterprise in HD is next?

My Directivo is also now mapping 30-1, 30-3, and 30-4 properly to 68-1, 68-3, and 68-4. All that is left is 30-2 to 68-2. The only other station left to correct mapping and guide issues is WMFE, and that may be something that DirecTV ultimately has to fix.

I think your problem may be with your TV and it may be something that you need to pursue with the TV manufacturer. I haven't been having any problems with WKCF WB 18 and no one else seems to have reported any problems either. Maybe this is why Joe hasn't responded. He may feel it is a TV problem. Have you contacted the TV manufacturer?

No other station does this, which is why i think its a WB18 issue, but i will take it up with samsung, the TV has picture issues anyway so i might need to exchange it for another one anyway so we'll see what happens there

Maybe the issue is that the signal from WKCF WB 18 is too strong and is overloading your ATSC tuner, causing the TV to shut off. That is just a guess, but I know that the HD DirecTivo's have problems when the signal is too strong. Some users have solved the problem by putting something on the line that actually causes the signal to weaken, such as a splitter. Maybe you can give that a try.

Along the same lines, WESH channel 2-1 was not coming in for the first 28 minutes of the 11:00 news. My signal strength was maxed for the channel but I could not get a lock. During this same time their sub-channel, 2-2 was coming in perfectly. I tried to get them on two different HD TV's that use different antennas, so the problem was with WESH.

If anyone is interested in demonstrating in front of WRBW the World Wide Save Enterprise Rally: Orlando is happening on March 12th.

I have never been to a Star Trek convention or anything but I have been a fan of the series for 30 years and the thought of demonstrating against WRBW for any reason appeals to me.

Last weekend, WESH locked up my SIR-TS-360 twice. At the beginning of Law and Order SVU I had picture but no audio and the unit was unresponsive to the remote and the front panel controls, except for RESET, which cured the problem. At the end of the show it froze in a partial frame refresh. When I RESET the unit again, WESH-DT was gone....no signal. Next day it was back and OK.

I'm not sure how an incoming signal can lockup the receiver unless there is a software error or a memory leak or overlap between the video and sound FIFOs and the program memory space. Anybody seen this or know the cure?

Thanks,

Al

Here's a copy of the e-mail I sent to the list at the front of this thread. If you feel the same way, maybe you could send it also...

Gentlemen (and Ladies, if any):

I have a request which, I suspect, would be echoed by most if not all of
your subscribers. When you transmit 4:3 program material, please
transmit it in 4:3, 480p or 480i (preferred) or use gray bars rather
than black bars when transmitting in a 16:9 format. When you transmit it
in a 16:9 format such as 720p or 1080i and add black bars, you prohibit
us from watching it in 4:3 and using gray bars to avoid burning in our
monitors. We must either zoom it and miss part of the picture or take
the risk or burning in our screens by keeping the shadow-box area
black. Most monitor manufacturers are now recommending gray bars as the
way to avoid burn in.

Thanks,

The primary WMFE HD channel is mapping back to 24-1 again. The secondary channel is mapping to 24-4. Seems that WMFE can't make up their mind where they want to be, but at least the channel is back where DirecTV has their guide data for.

I don't agree with your request.

First, it is my understanding that the stations can not hot swap between 720p/1080i and 480i/p. Their encoders simply will not allow this back and forth change. Therefore what they send you is always going to be 720p or 1080i no matter what you are watching. The decision they must make is should we stretch or use pillar bars. I for one am glad they do not stretch.

As for the color of the pillar bars, I think black is the better choice, but I know we could argue this forever. If you look at the future of display devices, they are DLP/LCoS/LCD, none of which burn. For those of you with plasma displays, any good model will allow you to stretch content even if it enters the display already in 720p/1080i formats. If your display does not then hopefully your OTA receiver does (as does newer BH HD receivers). If neither does you should consider either updating one of the two, or simply just be careful how long you watch channels with pillar bars. A few hours at a time in between many hours of total viewing is not going to harm any good quality plasma, and the effect is even less for CRT based devices.

Hmm... my Panasonic 7UY doesn't do this and I consider it a "good model".

Looks like WBCC's mapping now has everything on 68-x with program guide info too.

Back when the stations first came on the air, WFTV and WESH had gray bars. WFTV had an issues in that theirs always had a thin black gap between the bar and the picture. WESH's bars were really dark gray and they were always playing around trying to put text in there. They also tended to forget to turn off the bars during HD programming. Both finally got rid of the bars all together.

I don't care if the gray bars are there or not, but am very much against stretching.

WKMG is showing the game in HD on 6.2, why are the showing the same thing in SD on 6.1? I can understand showing different games in SD, but it's waste of bandwidth to show the same thing on both subchannels.

Doctor52, I noticed the same thing why carry the same game, and the SD feed was not very good quality. I see tonite 6 is carrying the Syracuse game same time as the Duke game and the rest of the day they are carrying same game on both feeds?

Where did everyone go,

There has been no activity since March 18th. And WMFE-DT PSIP has screwed up again.
