Does anyone have any updates on the antenna issues at the Chesterfield site? With the trees out, I an now starting to have problems with some of the stations.

Overcoming multicast is often as much about the digital demodulator in your TV or converter box as it is about the antenna. What equipment were you using? I found that between ~2004 and ~2008 there was a vast improvement in multicast reception for the majority of tuners in TVs & PCs.

Has anybody else noticed really poor local commercial insertion timing during primetime shows? The most recent example was Golden Boy on WTVR on Weds night, where a 15-second Sonic spot was inserted in the completely wrong place (right in the middle of an action scene, with actors in mid sentence). I think I've seen this on other stations here too, most frequently with the local spots overrunning the end of the break & cutting over the network feed. I never used to notice this in Raleigh. Maybe I'm just used to a higher standard..

Well, apparently a bad luck but also a good indicator of the general trend. Streaming over internet is replacing traditional channels and satellite companies becoming a niche product serving customers in the remote areas.

Thanks for that link. I guess that's why I am still not getting channel 57(or 44).

^^ This.

I've had near-perfect reception from Richmond stations as far as 80 miles away (Washington, VA), and still perfect 15 miles northwest of Charlottesville. In both locations I was on a ridge looking southeast, which helped, but was never affected by multipath issues. Often a smaller antenna works much better when that close.

What happened with the Redskins Titans game on WRLH? The signal kept dropping out and the sound went out or went to and annoying pulse intermittently that had to be muted.

hjriver,

Thank you for a great news.

At some point I thought we are dealing with the end of the OTA TV in Richmond area.

I have been thinking the same thing. The last update in the times dispatch some time ago say the repair should be completed in Oct.

The Times Dispatch reports this morning channels 8, 35, and 57 are now back at full power. Channels 6 and 23 will be back to normal by the end of the week.

I have noticed the signal strength for 8.1 has not returned to the 100% perfect levels I was getting before all the problems at the tower site. Did something change in the way the antenna was positioned on top of the tower or are there still some unresolved issues? All of the other stations are back to the levels I was getting before.

I get crap for OTA HDTV here in 23112 (RounTrey subdivision). I ordered a "leaf" antenna and hope to at least be able to get 12.1. Right now I sometimes get 6 and 35 but 8 and 23 are fine.

Not sure if you have resolved your reception for 8,35 and 57 but if not you will need to clear the tables from your receiver and rescan to get a new set since we were on low power for so long while the antenna was rebuilt.

Sorry for being absent for so long but this has been a very trying year for us at the station. My apologies.

I'm in 23112 also, near Deer Run and get all but 12.

Did the leaf antenna help you get channel 12?

I actually had better luck for the other channels using antenna that came with my stereo receiver, a simple length of wire attached to the BNC plug.

Yes I get 6,8,12,23,35 and 57 all in HD. I get full signal strength on all of them. I'm a believer in the Mohu leaf! We are close enough that you can check out my setup if you wish. PM me .

Thank you, now I can order a Mohu without worry. Off to Amazon.

Update: Leaf antenna did the trick, getting 12 now, and WUPV.

I did a rescan and did not notice any change in reception for any of the local channels.

After doing a rescan for the local channels a few weeks ago, I still have not noticed any changes to channel 8.1. I am now seeing a weaker signal strength for channel 12.1.

signal strength seems to fluctuate, and antenna needs to be moved to different location to pick up certain stations for me.

my current antenna location picks up 6, 8, 12, 56 but not the Fox 35. If I move it to pick up Fox 35 then I can't pick up 12.

May have to try signal amplifier.

Me too! How this small factor antenna is able to pick Channel 12 remains a mystery to me, an electrical engineer in the previous life..

More over, I placed antenna on the wall behind the TV at 12 inches distance (tower is in just opposite direction) and it works like a charm showing full strength on the signal meter.

Miracles happen....

Amazon:

Mohu Leaf Paper-Thin Indoor HDTV

Amplified antenna is also available:

Leaf Plus Amplified Indoor HDTV Antenna

I used the first one, without amplifier, and it worked like a charm.

Walmart and Sam's Club carry the Mohu Leaf Ultimate, which is the newer amplified version. I think Sam's Club is cheaper, around $49. The Walmart price varies from $69 -$79 depending upon location. You may also consider the Winegard Flatwave, which is similar but may perform better on VHF for Channel 12. It is sold at Sears or Kmart under the Alphaline brand for $79 for the amped version. And Home Depot carries the unamped version for around $39. And Costco has the amped version for $48.
