The winds we are having right now (3-12-14 @ 8:30 p.m.) are really causing breakups on 8.1. Anyone else having problems?

It's been the news all day. Richmond-based Media General will be merging with LIN Media for $1.6 billion.

All of these station's digital transmitters will be in standby mode until the all clear is given. Unfortunately it is an annual inspection that I can not get around on my tower. WRIC will remain on FIOS but Comcast will be effected along with both satellite vendors. I am not sure of the other station's status with direct feeds to cable systems or satellite vendors at this point.

What a useful thread. I wouldn't have known why a few of my over-the-air channels were out if it weren't for this.

Isn't it reasonable to expect to find an announcement about this on the networks' home pages?

This seems to happen to all OTA channels from the Chesterfield transmitter around 1am every now and then.

Why is there no announcement anywhere?  This was all I could find, with 45 minutes of online sleuthing.

And these messages (quoted above) are from 2009!

Anybody notice that Comcast has now scrambled ALL of their channels, even the HD locals. My bedroom TV (QAM tuned) started displaying a message that the signal was scrambled on the few channels I could still get using my QAM tuner (mainly locals and crappy channels). Now I get nothing when I auto-tune the cable digital channels. They are apparently forcing subscribers to lease boxes for every TV. We just use the bedroom TVs for local programming (mainly news) when going to bed and waking up. Looks like I'll have to switch to an antenna and say goodbye to NBC12.mad.gif

I noticed that as well. Highly annoying.

Raycom Dispute with Directv

I often wonder why if something is free OTA, why is anyone charged for it. It should be a free service from Directv and Raycom. If NBC12 had a better signal, it wouldn't matter. Anyone with an indoor antenna is held hostage by both providers. I am only in Chesterfield, it's not 100 miles away.

Happen to watch the 7th game of the World Series on Fox and I will say the feed looks awful. Commercials looked fine so I know it is the feed. Fox should be ashamed to feed such garbage on such a big stage. I guess they figure most Americans will not notice the poor PQ.

Looking for an explanation of the signal drop for NBC12 WWBT around 5 pm every day. It seems to strengthen again around 8 pm. I get perfect reception in the early morning and daytime hours. I live about 5 miles west of 288 in Powhatan.

Seriously considering cutting the cord after my Verizon Fios contract ends next year. I ran a scan and now I am receiving 17 stations. Rock solid reception here in Charter Colony and that is with a Terk HDTVi non amplified antenna. As far as channel 12 is concerned, My I was unable to receive it until I bought the Terk which has a VHF antenna on it also.

I am in Glen Allen and I had to get an outdoor antenna to get ch 12....really needed an outdoor antenna to get non freezing on all ch .... I am picking up Norfolk TV stations after dark... need to aim antenna now that it is up....was paying Comcast almost $30.00 just for locals.....Comcast even had the cannon balls to start encrypting local ch making all my QAM TVs, DVD Recorders and Tivos not work without cable cards......

Funny how location can make such a difference. I am 3.9 miles from main group of towers. I used to live in another part of Chesterfield about 7 miles from the towers and could not get any consistent digital reception. Indoor and outdoor antennas could not get a reliable signal. Way too much multipath. Even after having the most directional antenna I could find up on the roof, as soon as the wind would blow I would get pixelation. Now a simple Terk HDTVi can pull all of the stations without any issues.

One observation after toggling between NFL network and WTVR cbs 6 while watching TNF was that the feed from NFL network looked markedly better then the WTVR feed. Much sharper on the NFL network feed. I did not think that our locals compressed them further after receiving them.

Never thought to compare the two.

In the West End, signal keeps dropping to zero every 15-30 seconds on PBS (23.1) WCVE. Otherwise a strong signal. Real drag during Downton Abbey last night. I don't get it - it is a multipath problem? Maybe I should turn the signal amplifier off. It's up in the attic with the antenna... Thanks for suggestions!

I am temporarily disabled so I cant put it in the attic or mount it outside just yet.. According to maps I am within 25 miles from all the towers.. I want antenna tv, me tv etc.. Repositioned it to south by southwest (according to my phone compass) and it works better now, with only a very occasional dropout. Strangely quit receiving Charlottesville stations that are east by northeast according to TVfool.com but that doesn't bother me.

Best of luck to you. I have so many trees around, I needed to put a larger directional antenna in my attic. Picked one up at Ollie's of all places - it even has a rotating motor and remote.

I've heard good things about the Terk indoor antennas. Amazon seems to sell a lot of the flat panel style antennas. You may have a little bit of a hard time picking up NBC in Mechanicsville unless you are up on a hill, since they broadcast over VHF. But who knows - it's worth a try before going into the attic!

Cool, I hope it works. Tell you what, I'm unfortunately unemployed at the moment so I do have some extra time on my hands. If you decide to put an antenna in the attic, message me and I'll see if I can come help you with it. Either way, good luck!

I dropped cable and am going OTA now. I live in western Chesterfield and decided to try the basic cheapie Insiginia indoor antenna for each tv rather than all the work of putting one in the attic etc. So on 1 tv I can get Channel 12 and the others I cannot. Any ideas or do i have to suck it up and get a better antenna?

Depends on how elevated your house is and how far from the transmitter. I have a good situation and am getting 6-1,6-2,6-3;8-1,8-2;12-1,12-2,12-3; 23-1,23-2,23-3;35-1,35-2,35-3;57-1,64 and a couple more (this list from memory) nearly all of them crystal clear and with a cheapie indoor antenna which I've hidden behind a window valence. I'm in the (Western) Robious Road corridor though; so closer to the transmitter. And I'm on very high ground for what that's worth. Want to move out to the country a bit more but don't want to give up this OTA thing. I'd swear that my OTA picture is better than when I had Comcast or FIOS. Now I use FIOS for internet only (which facilitates Netflix, Hulu etc) and am really, really loving OTA. I'll bet you need to do the attic antenna thing, and make sure your device is properly oriented.

Same here . . . less compression, I guess.

And: I'm a big fan of running cabling to the attic especially when remodeling, etc., would make it easy. If it works, it works. If not, you have a head start on running cabling to the rooftop.

My BIL flatly refused to believe it was OTA. He's convinced that I'm stealing cable. But this is so much better than cable, and I hope I never have to go back. Now that Hulu is carrying "How It's Made" I don't need cable for anything at all, and I sure don't miss it!

Agreed. Even though I don't appear to need it, I'd do it whenever it's convenient. There's no downside (provided I can conceal the cabling) and lots of potential upside.

Are you able to see the 8.3 channel that was put online earlier this year? It is the GET TV network while 8.2 is the ION network.

Yes, I'm able to 'Get' that channel too. Probably others as well, as I said I was working from memory. It's still the deal of the century (free). I have Hulu+ and you have to pay to watch commercials on that.

Too bad the sub channels are in SD. I know ION in its original form is broadcast in HD. The subs look pretty crappy on my 65" Samsung display.
