On a related note, my attic is big enough for a circus. So if the bigger antenna will do that same thing for me and cost less... I am all for it!

There is such a thing as too much signal. I'm more or less within eyesight of all the full power stations in the Mobile area and I had to remove my amplified antenna completely to eliminate the dropouts on some of the stronger signals.

Even with the signal strength meter pegged at 100, I was getting tons of dropouts and audio hiccups. I changed over to a literal "wire dangling from the back", still get 100 on the stations and no more hiccups and dropouts.

YMMV.

It says that with a simple indoor antenna will get 11 local channels. Anything behond that appears to be repeat stations.

So should I bother with amplification, or just get a multi direction antenna and put it in my attic, like this:

Just as a sanity check-- have you tried a small $4 bowtie from Radio Shack? The signals up on the mountain are pretty powerful, and really, west Madison isn't too far from them (compared to what some of the folks here on AVS are doing) .. My dad has had pretty awesome luck with a radio shack $4 bowtie. (Slaughter Rd area) I'm a bit farther just in the "south valley" of Rainbow Mountain that really gets in my way (W/N/E all blocked). You're likely far enough past Rainbow Mountain however to need to worry about it (as your tvfool plot shows). I'd try a bowtie first.... if it doesn't work you're only out $4 (after tax!). Then you can shell out for the big boys.

I ended up having decent enough reception (Even where I'm at) with a radio shack bowtie that I made my own 2-bay (double bowtie, stacked vertically) tuned specifically for the CW coming out of the Florence area. I am still able to decently pick up all the local stations. With Smallville in its last season however, I'll be taking it down and rebuilding it for the Huntsville stations and point it back in their direction for even better reception.

good luck,
..dane

It sure is nice to see the newscast in HD this morning, despite the kinks. Good Job!

Now if they can just work out the aspect ratio kinks in the subchannel...

Andrew, can you pickup CW with your antenna array pointing at HSV? I wonder how that will affect me being more in the middle at the west side of Madison.

Congrats on going live in HD. Looks really nice and looks a little better than WAFF.

Gripes:
Your logo is obnoxiously big. Can you shrink it a little. I mean, really, its distracting..

Need a little more light or a little differnent calibration for studio shots from one or two of your cameras. Sometimes Jerry looked like he was wearing a black hole instead of a black suit (yes my TV is calibrated so I know somethings not right). Don't go as light as WAFF though. Mark Thornhill's dark suits can look a little washed out at times because they have a little too much light on the set.

On Dan's weather forecast you can see the top edge of the radar map behind all the overlays. If I were using a 2.5% overscan I wouldn't see this, but with todays digital displays, I think a lot of people (the tech savvey ones) are using 1:1 pixel mapping, so this is going to show up for all of us who using this feature. I see this on a lot of your commercials too. Can you do something about this too.

Overall good job and the picture is outstanding.

I know this is the first night, but I thought you might want some feedback.

I am using a Terk amplified ant (hang on the window facing east). All local channels are fine. I am near Wal Tra and Old Madison.

How is satellite service in the area these days?

I'm leaning towards DirecTV, merely due to the fact that my wife and I have a membership for Costco and they have an offer going right now.

We're having a house built and there is no cable yet, and even then it will be Knology. Until they up their HD offerings by a good bit I won't be going back to them.

I also have Directv, and think it is great (unmatched for sports content), however in my opinion, Dish and cable have surpassed it in the HD area, make sure the stations you want to see in HD are in HD.

Also Directv is very expensive compared to some of the bundling going on now. Also make sure you have good line of sight.

The line of site thing I have down pat. There are trees off, maybe a half mile from us, but nothing blocking the south-east/west view at all.

I would also consider Dish, but the DirecTV deal at Costco makes it very tempting. I will be looking at second year costs and early termination fees very closely though.

If I could get someone other that Knology for cable when it does finally roll out there I would easily consider it, and get some Centon tuners (or HDHomeRun Primes if they are out then).

It's just that the channel offering from Knology is pitiful for what they charge.

I am a Dish subscriber since 2007. I had Knology before that. I like Dish and have had few problems.

The decision on Dish VS. DirectTV depends on what you like to watch.

If you are a sports fan and willing to pay for the sports packages DirectTV is the way to go.

If you watch more general channels and movies Dish is better.

Both have more HD channels than Knology.

Is Internet service part of the decision? I get Internet from AT&T DSL. It is not as fast what you can get from Knology. No bundle discount with Dish and AT&T.

Good luck on your decision.

Besides the sports/general channels thing already mentioned, I'd have to give the edge to DirecTV's HD channels in overall quality. Dish looks more like cable to me, in other words, fuzzy around sharp edges. Neither provider has very good looking SD channels, which may be an issue if you have a reeeeally big TV. Both are better than most cableco's analog and digital tiers, though.

How well are you all receiving WAFF since the tornado? Are they on low power/generator, antenna damage, or ???

Although I have DirecTV, my "without locals" saves me $3/month and I'm receiving them OTA with an attic-mounted antenna. Seems their signal is weaker than normal as I get WAFF on the PC's tuners (albeit a bit pixelated) and not at all further downstream in my bedroom.

I've always had trouble getting signals due to location, but I'm getting a great signal on WAFF right now.

WHNT is even coming in decently now (couldn't get it after the analog cut-off); did they increase their power? IIRC they were running at low power due to a temporary license on UHF 19. Or is the change just a temporary fluke?

I wish I could cull the locals from my directv package. I can get all of my locals easily OTA. I've never had any problem getting WAFF but I can now see their transmitter now that mother nature culled some trees.

I believe everything you are describing is just good tropo, and from what I am reading it will be that way for a bit. Wednesday morning looks really interesting for dx possibilities.

I've been able to get WAFF well up into the morning hours lately, which is my typical experience for this time of year. Everything else in Huntsville is booming in, as well as WHDF. I'm even getting Nashville reflections off of something (my antenna faces SSE).

WAFF's long-standing construction permit expires on 01/05/2012.

I am in Lexington and 48 is the only channel that I can't receive over the air, every once in awhile I get a picture for a few min then pixelates and drops away...I used to get it no problem when it was analog but since they switch to digital it has been a flop for me, I wrote an email but got a standard-ed response about maybe my antenna is off...(use a rotor on a 50' tower) I know they requested and were authorized by the FCC to up there power but don't know the status of that, more then likely nothing has happened.

I got a flyer from Knology today; they are adding 22 HD channels and moving a bunch of SDs around effective July 27. The changes:

New HDs:
909: CMT
910: Hallmark Movie
911: Lifetime Movie
934: Planet Green
935: Biography
937: SyFy
941: CNN
942: Headline News
943: CNBC
944: FOX News
953: Travel
954: E!
957: Comedy Central
964: Lifetime
965: USA
967: Bravo
968: Oxygen
979: ESPNews
980: ESPNU
984: NFL
991: Golf
992: Versus

Moving channels (all SD):
Basic:
10: Government Access (from Expanded Basic 42)
14: Weather Channel (from Expanded Basic 37)
Expanded Basic:
16: CNN (from 20)
17: Headline News (from 27)
18: FOX News (from 38)
19: MSNBC (from 43)
20: Lifetime (from 18)
25: Nickelodeon (from 65)
26: ABC Family (from 66)
37: USA (from 19)
38: Lifetime (from 70)
40: MTV (from 16)
42: History (from 26)
43: CMT (from 63)
46: Travel (from 17)
51: HGTV (from 68)
52: FX (from 51)
63: TV Land (from 69)
70: Spike (from 25)
99: School Board (from 71)
Digital Preferred:
104: ZTV-11 (from analog 99)
114: C-SPAN 3 (from digital 76)
115: C-SPAN 2 (from digital 75)
116: C-SPAN (from analog 40)
136: Inspiration (from analog 64)
137: TBN (from analog 52)
143: ShopNBC (from Basic analog 14)
144: Jewelry (from digital 74)
155: WHIQ (from Basic analog 10)

It is interesting that they are moving a local basic cable station (WHIQ, the local PBS affiliate) to digital. I thought there was a rule that the locals had to stay available on analog for a few more years; maybe Knology is "testing the waters" for going all-digital?

Also interesting is that they are only turning off 7 analog channels and adding 7 SD digital and 22 HD digital. That's a lot of channels packed into not a whole lot of bandwidth; I hope they don't over-compress the new channels like they do some of the existing (e.g. Science HD).

From what I understand, they are also dropping the West Coast feeds from the Starz group of channels. Perhaps that helped free up some bandwidth.

Ahh, I don't have Starz, so I didn't notice that. Comparing my TiVo's lineup to the new lineup, the following 8 SD premium channels will be removed (names are from TiVo):

337 WOMAX
371 STARZP
381 ENCORP
387 ENCAP
389 ENCRLP
391 ENCRMP
393 ENCRDP
395 ENCWSP

Knology (someone in Atlanta) called us (WHDF) about a month ago, stating they'd be adding our HD feed soon.

Currently testing 3D with Sammy DLP, shutter glasses, and HTPC

Apparently now Knology has re-considered and is not removing APT from Ch. 10. Wonder if that means that we will get less than 22 new HD channels come July 27th?

Got a response back on this from Knology: "Yes, we are having to drop Lifetime Movie Network in HD as well as Lifetime in HD."

Don't understand the logic in this, but if this keeps up we won't have any additional HD and I'll be back to seriously considering DirecTV....
