This may sound like a dumb question but --
We live in a high rise with unobstructed view towards the west over the bay. I put in a Terk 55 and hooked it up to our Mits SHD400 the best we can get is the local PBS-DT station.

I once had 10-1 for about 10 minutes. Any help would be appreciated. I have seen on here people say the Terk is junk, is the Radio Shack a better choice, or is it more a function of being on the 20th floor with lots of concrete and re-bar?

Thanks,
Frank

Hi, Frank,

Concrete and rebar can, indeed reduce signal strength and create multipath interference, which creates "ghosting" on analog signals and causes signal dropouts on digital signals.

Neither the Terk 55 nor the Radio Shack antenna which is similar in appearance perform welll in the presence of high multipath.

If you want to continue experimenting with the Terk to try and improve your digital reception with it, try re-positioning it while watching the analog broadcasts of WPLG, WSVN and WFOR. Try to get it into a position that gives you the strongest signal with a picture that is as free of ghosts as possible on the analog signals. This will generally give you the best digital reception since those stations' digital antennas are co-sited with their analog antennas.

If this doesn't work you'll need to consider getting a different kind of antenna, something that's more directional and can do a better job of rejecting multipath.

Dave and David:

Can you please tell me what kind of antennae are you using to get WPLG/WTVJ/PBS/WSVN {every possible digital broadcast)? I am located close to JOG Road on Hypoluxo road.
On my research I found that I need to get Medium Directional with Preamp from my location to get these stations. I got thsi info from antennaweb.

Also did you install the antenna yourself or did you get an installer to do it. Can you post the installer name / phone number?

thanks for the info

Hi,

I'm in College Park in NE Lake Worth, 5 blocks from the ICW and using a Radio Shack VU-210 antenna, 25 ft. up with a Radio Shack 15-1113C antenna preamp. I'm using a ChannelMaster IR remote rotator that I got via mail order through Radio Shack. I installed everything myself.

At your location you'll probably really need a large antenna like mine to get the Miami DTVs, not a "medium." You're pretty close to the Lantana antenna farm where 5, 12, 29 and 42 are located, so you'll need a highly directional antenna and possibly some traop filters to prevent interference from the locals. But, all the locals will probably be on the air by May of next year anyway.

Qoute "all the locals will be on the air anyways."

Dave are u kidding. WFOR was 1/2 years late and NBC 2 or more YEARS. Unfortunately, history and the broadcasters master plan is on my side!!

Btw, you CAN recieve DTV thru rails. Just use a bigger antenna! Better yet protrude one thru a window! No kidding!

'Bra, why don't you relax and try to get your facts strait?

Frank wasn't talking about railings, he was talking about the rebar that reinforces the concrete in his building. That rebar, steel frames and metal lathe for plaster support are murder on RF signals has been known since Tesla and Marconi's time.

Second, WFOR's tower difficulties bear absolutely no relationship to the tower situations in the West Palm Beach market.

WPEC, WFLX and WPBF all have new or relatively new towers with plenty of space on them. WFLX's DTV antenna was installed last summer for crying out loud...all they're waiting for now is Palm Beach County zoning approval to add onto their transmitter building to accomodate their new DTV transmitter.

WPEC's DTV transmitter is currently sitting in our transmitter building as we await shipment of other DTV gear (I'm currently looking at it on a security canmera feed.)

Only WPTV needs to build a new tower and they are already operating from a brand new state-of-the-art HDTV-equipped studio facility. Now, does this sound like a market that's liable to suffer endless delays in deploying DTV? Get real.

Nobody in markets as small as West Palm Beach (ADI#43) is required to be up until May 1, 2002. Across the country, many won't make it. But many will.

???

What facts? PBC does not have any DTV stations yet. As we painfully know...there is such a thing as an illicit FCC extention.

Rumors and speculation is not a part of my HDTV vocabulary!! I dread the words coming soon!

The bigger ? is will WPEC grant anyone a waiver?? I smell another complaint directed toward county comish Burt A!!

Well an update on our DTV signal reception...two nights ago we got 10-1 and 2-1 very clear. It was awesome to see our amp light up with Dolby Digital for OTA signals.

However 10-1 last night was another story, it came an went. Finally switched back DirecTV channel 10.

BTW -- we get both 9-1 and 10-1 for OTA 10, any reason for this?

Hi,

WPLG-DT actually occupies the channel 9 TV spectrum. You can tune it directly by punching 9-1 or 10-1. Your tuner should automatically "remap" it to 10-1 when you're channel surfing. Manually punching-in 10-0 should get you WPLG-TV (NTSC.)

I just took the new update on my Dish 6000 receiver and performed an auto scan of the DTV channels. I now show channels 69-01, 69-02 and 69-03 on my guide. No picture or sound right now; but, I assume the receiver sensed some sort of signal.

I assume that WAMI-DT was performing some testing.

(Channel 47 remapped to Channel 69)

What HD content would WAMI have? I suppose it could be sports...that would be very good. Or is it a given that they will just be digital 480i? Anyone know the plan?

WAMI was recently purchased by Univision and will soon be broadcasting in Spanish.

The fate of the remainders of the Marlins and Heat contracts has not yet been determined.

Channels 69-01, 69-02 and 69-03 only showed up after I accepted the new software upgrade.

Old version is 691PCNAD-N
New version is 750PCNAD-N

Today, I did another auto scan of the DTV channels; and, my guide has now added 69-04, 69-05 and 69-06.

Did WFOR just increase signal strength? I am showing signal in 70's and getting nice picture. Previously it was 28 and I was unable to get reception.

Bernie,

The signal strength I am receiving from WFOR is the same level I have received since they went on the air.

Their current FCC extension allows them until October 5 to go to full power.

Can anyone else with a Dish 6000 verify this?

More delays? WHDT's website now says:

By the fall of 2001, WHDT plans to have its new 1 million watt transmitter in operation at that location and will then broadcast soley in Hogh Definition.

It used to say Spring of 2001.

It appears that July 31st was a wet dream.

Thanks for the headsup on WAMI-DT. I'll do a search for it on my RCA DTC100 and Zenith IQB64W10W tuners this afternoon. (Channel 47.) According to www.100000watts.com , WAMI is to become a Spanish language station in January, 2002.

Too bad about WHDT.

It appears that all of the subchannels under the 69 prefix were being broadcast under the incorrect channel by WHDT; since, WAMI is not likely to be broadcasting any time soon.

Maybe we'll be receiving WHDT-DT by July 31st after all.
