I have a Winegard MS-2000 multidirectional antenna, with a built in amplifier. My power injector bit the dust and I also had to replace that. I used to get a KDKA 2 out of Pittsburgh, 3 and 5 out of Cleveland, but now I even have trouble with 45 WNEO and until some tinkering, 21 WFMJ wouldn't come in either. Any recommendations, up to and including a new antenna?

Shutting off the amplifier will probably reduce or solve your problem with receiver overload, and it may even help with receiving distant stations like WNEO (I think there's a translator on the WFMJ tower on RF-44). If you were using the thing with a busted power injector for a while, that can also greatly reduce signal strength. Channels 2, 3 and 5 are now on UHF, whereas they were on low VHF during the analog days. That may explain why you can no longer receive these channels.

I used a makeshift dipole antenna for UHF for a while, and it worked better than any set of rabbit ears or small indoor antenna that I ever bought previously.

Thanks for the tip. I had purchased a replacement part from Summit Source, but alas I was sent the wrong part number. The LED on the old power injector flickers for a few seconds and then dies. I was able to get KDKA 2 after the digital cutover, as well as some other networks (like 23 ION, which no longer comes in either.) I might be hosed for the weekend, since I primarily use the antenna to watch Steeler games when our local CBS broadcasts the Browns instead!

I'm still a rookie when it comes to some of this TV stuff, so I appreciate the help. I've worked with computers for years, so I'm willing to learn.

Just bought a Antennas direct Clearstream 4 long range antenna to use on my LG 550 plasma. the main reason is to get KDKA pitt. for steeler games. I mounted it on the highest part of my roof, and the signal is great at night, but during the day I get no signal. If someone could explain why this is happening I would really appreciate it.

I don't know how far from KDKA's tower you are but it is not unusual to have better reception at night. Here, 91 miles from WPSU's tower, I sometimes get signal strengths of 75 or higher as measured by my dtv pal. Other times no lock. Google tropospheric scatter and tropospheric ducting.

ScottProdigy and khall15, if you go to http://www.tvfool.com and enter your exact address and antenna height above ground level, you'll get a good idea of the stations available at your location. KDKA's signal is fairly strong in the Youngstown area with the exception of some low lying areas. KDKA actually broadcasts on UHF channel 25. The Winegard HD8800 or the Antennas Direct 91XG in combination with a Winegard HDP-269 preamp should be an effective setup for receiving KDKA in most of the Youngstown area. The HDP-269 is highly resistant to overload.

I live in Salem and receive KDKA on my old style Channel Master 4228 8-bay UHF antenna. Unfortunately, the old style 4228 has been discontinued. KDKA is by far the strongest of all the Pittsburgh stations I receive.

I think WFMJ may finally have their whole master control in HD now. Ellen's in HD, Oprah's in HD. I noticed as of last night their election coverage lower third as well as their corner logo have been redone and are both much crisper and I suspect in HD as well.

Took some time, but glad it's here! Now if you guys can get your newscasts done in HD (Or more specifically widescreen, this can probably be done easily now with existing SD cams and special lenses and just upconverting in the control room) that'd be really great.

I want to add in addition to my last post that it seems even though it is all still in SD, the newscasts and everything entailed (on-screen graphics, intro/outro bumpers, etc.) seemed to be noticeably crisper than before. I've been watching stuff on my laptop lately which has a 1600x900 screen so all the little imperfections show up easily and there's a noticeable improvement all across the board.

Thumbs up guys!

WYFX-LP has a CP to put a digital station on RF-19. Does anyone know how that's progressing?

What is up with the volume surging up and down on 21 WFMJ in the last couple mornings? It is doing it right now.

I did notice now WFMJ has Ellen, Dr.Phil and Oprah in HD now.

Syndicated shows have been in HD for about a month or two now. However, the HD flanking on newscasts and lottery drawings seems to be new within the last few days. I have a feeling after all these months (and arguably for some people, years) of waiting, WFMJ newscasts in HD are soon to become a reality.

You are probably right,it seems WFMJ will be eventually broadcast in HD Local. Back here in Pittsburgh KDKA has there news set and weather in HD, but NOT local remotes in HD. WPXI has news set and the remotes in HD. Too bad Autumn Ziemba is not at WFMJ anymore.

I also did noticed the sidebars for the 11PM news the other day...I wonder if HD newscasts are on the horizon soon The heat is on for them since the other full powered local stations started HD newscasts a few months back.

Is anyone aware of the progress of WYFX-LD? I would venture to guess that not much will happen with it until the spring.

It's still broadcasting. I don't see much activity in the FCC's administrative records regarding its future. Certainly no filings to cancel the license at this time.

On another note, I saw a WFMJ News promo that appeared to be in HD during NBC's network "post-coverage" of the State of the Union address tonight. Looks like they're getting really close now!

I don't think WYFX-LD is on yet. He meant the digital permit, I assume, not the original analog 62.

I don't know if New Vision is even continuing with it, considering that WYFX has been digitally establlished on 27.2 for a long time.

I don't really see how they would benefit from getting WYFX on a separate transmitter at this point. Too many people have good coverage from WKBN-DT, and I don't think they would be willing to give up that many FOX viewers just to move WKBN-DT back to 1080i.

Yes I was referring to the construction permit for digital RF-19. The permit was issued this past summer, which was well after WYFX went high def on 27.2. A CP was issued for RF-35 a few years ago, but nothing ever materialized. For an LP station, it looks like it will have a nice omni footprint-covering most of the DMA. They must vacate 62 at some point, as the spectrum was auctioned off a few years ago to telecom companies, who still claim they lack enough spectrum to operate. New vision might as well take advantage of the LP station-they could even decide to put different programming on it while leaving the Fox affiliation on 27.2.

The fire/street team promo has been on the air for about a week. Though I must admit I'm surprised to see that they were using the old-style lower-thirds in the promo since that means somebody in graphics had to extend them to fill 16:9. When WYTV went HD, they changed almost all their graphics over at the same time so as not to have a mix of 4:3 showing up in the newscast. It makes me wonder if WFMJ's switch to HD will actually bring new graphics and music. The only evidence that there will be are the "new" (over a year old) weather graphics, and the newer lower-thirds that they use off-and-on during the newscast.

Has anyone else noticed WKBN 27.1 broadcasting in 480i this afternoon? 27.2 is still in 720p. Perhaps they're cranking up the bitrate output for FOX today to make the Super Bowl look even better since that dual 720p generally means WKBN and WYFX have a lot of MPEG artifacts in high motion video.

The NFL should put it in the contract (if they haven't already) that stations aren't allowed to broadcast the game in HD-Lite!

Interesting that you would mention that. That would be the most logical conclusion to me, although I watched it on on WJWDT-1 I don't think WJW has ever broadcast their signal in 1080i, even when there was only the one channel.

FOX and ABC chose to send their signals to their affiliates in 720p. CBS and NBC chose 1080i. WKBN is converting the CBS 1080i feed to 720p.

When is 21 WFMJ going to fix the problem with the sound surging up and down? It was doing it this morning on the Today show and last night on The Tonight Show With Jay Leno.

HAHA! Yeah I noticed that too. Actually, I first turned on the NASCAR race, and I only thought to try 27.1 after about a 1/2 hour, so it didn't even cross my mind right away. I really don't care who wins though

I wonder if CBS would ever gripe about this Does it cost much bandwidth to make it widescreen SD? At least that way one can see the entire 16:9 picture instead of having the aspect ratio locked at 4:3
