Same issues here...looks like either an NBC or WBBH problem. I get NBC OTA as well.

Not lately...only thing was the HD being down, but the digital signal was working.

The Fox thing has been fixed in that they are passing the network feed in HD like prime time stuff. The problem is consistently they forget to "flip the switch" and it takes a couple of minutes into prime time programming before the switch from SD to HD. I'm pretty sure that's a local issue.

As of today (Sunday), the audio for the OTA Olympics broadcast has been fixed. Center channel is back.

Peace,

DM

Tuned to FOX4 to see IDOL in HD and for 45 minutes it was SD. Called FOX and got message that business hours were 8-5, but message gave # for newsroom. Called it and whoever answered said they KNEW NOTHING about HD signal, and asked what needed to be done. I said tell SOMEONE to throw the switch. She said what does that mean- a bit peevishly, I said get an engineer and tell him to throw the switch for those who have HD-a minute later the signal came on in all its glory. I can't BELIEVE that it should come down to this. Isn't somebody responsible for getting this done? The last two IDOL shows got switched at least 10 minutes late, but tonight almost 50 minutes, and then only because I called- PATHETIC!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Way to go glenns!!!!!!!!

It was 53 minutes by the ticker on my Tivo and I was furious too. My problem was I watched it much later (not live) so it wouldn't have done any good for me to call.

I just don't get 1) why passing the network's HD signal has to be dependant on a manual function & 2) why it is consistently getting screwed up in prime time. That is the most important time of the day for a TV station.

Good grief! The first HD broadcast occurred almost a decade ago. Fix it boys! Ridiculous.

Peace,

DM

I have been involved by email with an exec from Journal Communications In Milwaukee, (new Owners), about when FOX4 HD will be added to COmcast. I copied him your last 2 posts, maybe he can forward to someone who can fix this. He's been a good, pleasant contact. When I hear back from him I'll let you know. (BTW, I am here in Naples thru this afternoon & watched in in glorious SD on FOX 4 on Comcast last night while the wife & kids were home watching in HD! I'll be on the plane when the results show is on tonite.)

My contact responded today, here is the response:

Thanks for the heads up. No reason for that to happen. We're making
some plant upgrades after taking over ownership and our training needs
to keep up with the evolution of equipment and personnel. Again,
thanks.

Hopefully, it will get better.

Sparkman87,

Has your contact given you a date for Fox4 to begin their HD transmission on Comcast? Got some friends that would love a realistic date to hope for.

Well tonight-Thursday- IDOL began again in Standard Definition. I called at 8:05, and got an employee who said something about network feeds????? Then someone flicked a switch and HD was there. Maybe I can get a job either making a call, or flicking the switch. Sounds easy enough!!!! But seriously it is painful to watch something that should be in HD only to find it isn't, especially when both nights we had company who had just heard me extolling the virtues of HD. They said "doesn't look so great to me" Come on FOX4 get it right, people want their network programs in HD for the whole show, not just the part we get if we call in.

That's what started me emailing there. They are talking which is an improvement fromt he prior owners who insisted on $$$ to allow carriage. What is promising is that EVERY other Journal Communications digital station is carried by the local cable co. So, he was positive that a deal would get done, but not sure of a time frame. I email him every month or so. I also gave him the link to this forum & he'll be checking in on it.

As most of you know WINK is still not broadcasting an OTA digital signal and probably will not be for most of 2006. For years they have used the FCC as their scapegoat but that all ended on October 29 2004 when the FCC issued a construction permit. Since then WINK has shifted the "blame game" from the FCC to the Charlotte County building department and the SFWMD for them not suppling the proper permits required to expand their transmitter building. Someone needs to tell Mr. Stuhlman that in order to receive a permit one must first apply for a permit. Knowing that the transmitter expansion is located in an enviromentally sensitive area WINK doesn't bother applying for the required ERP permit until December 14 2005 almost 2 months past the expiration date of the FCC construction permit. Relative to the county building permit WINK does somewhat better and applys for it on September 30 2005. To me it is obvious that the owners and management of WINK have not served the people of SW Florida well and have put their wallet first and the people second.

Permit update. Charlotte Co permit issued 1/4/2006. SFWMD permit issued 2/1/2006

FWIW, on January 17, WINK's Director of Engineering replied to me with this:

It was a long ordeal with the FCC in getting our DTV Construction Permit. We
have the DTV antennas and transmission line on the tower, the DTV
transmitter is ready to ship. We just got our Building Permit from Charlotte
County to expand our current transmitter building to accodate the new DTV
transmitter and equipment. We hope to have it all on the air by late Spring.

So keep your fingers crossed!

On 1/17/06 the footer inspection for the tramsmitter building had not taken place. According to WINK's sworn testimony to the FCC the transmitter building project would take 4 months to complete. It would seem that along with many other things, Mr Stuhlman needs helping with reading a calendar. You can follow construction progress with the Charlotte Co building department; the permit# is 2005094262.

What is the deal, their website says it is not available, but the technician I spoke with on the phone says it is. I can't get it via my cable box. Do I need an antenna for CBS here? I have to watch the NCAAs in HD. That's the main reason I got this TV. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks.

Many areas that Comcast serves do not carry any HD channels whatsoever and from what i'm told from the local office in Highlands Co. will not for at least a year.
As was already mentioned, there is no OTA available at this time.

FWIW.. I spoke with Mr. Kevin Harding at the FCC and he informed me that WINK-DT must be broadcasting no later than July 1st 2006. He also stated that there would be no more extensions.

i live in naples and i get cbs hd via comcast. i was wondering if any one knows the plans at WINK regarding the NCAA broadcast, specifically if they will show different games from CBS on the analog and HD channels. other cbs affiliates in other cities are apparently showing up to 3 games at the same time on their analog, standard definition, and HD channels. seems unlikely based on what WINK has failed to do thusfar with their digital transmission .... i wrote an email to winktv but i figured someone here would know something and actually respond.

TV Trey - that is very interesting. It sure seems like there's a lot of work still to be done on the transmitter building according to the inspection info that CapeFish has provided. I wonder what they will do if WINK doesn't make that date, fine them?

DavoM- Since this is the second extension WINK has received relative to their construction permit issued on 10/29/2004, it is my understanding that they could possibly lose their license. Considering all the grief WINK has put the people of SW Fl. through, i wouldn't mind seeing a new owner take over.

Wouldn't that be ironic.

Honestly, I don't watch a whole lot of CBS programming, but it's just the principle of the whole thing. Unexpectedly, my Texas A&M Aggies are in the NCAA tourney for the first time since 1980. It is a sad thought that I won't be able to watch them (or anybody) in HD.

The Ags play tonight at 9:40 PM, but so does Duke. I'm guessing the first round coverage will be normal and they'll be switching back and forth between games. I just looked at the information about the CBS online webcast and they are only allowing 200,000 people to log on at a time. Everybody else, stays in a waiting room until someone drops out. Not sure who thought that was a good idea.

Peace,

DM

It is now 10:30 PM and WINK has shown a 15 second highlight of the A&M game. So I decided to try the CBS online deal and got in, clicked on the A&M game and the message is telling me that it is blacked out because my local CBS affiliate is broadcasting this game.

Man I hate WINK.

To everyone who has not already done so, i would suggest going to the FCC website and read WINK's Use-it-or-lose-it list filing. It makes for very entertaining reading.
