Note about WB 6 in HD:

We have installed a major part of the equipment need for HD programming. We are still awaiting the rest to arrive. I think were are looking around a July date if not before.

A quick hello to all. I have been reading this thread for a while and I decided to take the plunge. Just got my HDTV today and just a small Antenna just to get things working. The fact that the weather is not that great might be causing some problems as well. I live in a 2 story home/condo/ and the towers are between. 40.4 and 48 miles north of me. If anyone could give me pointers on the best type of Antenna that will not cause too many problems with the Condo association, I would greatly appreciate it.

I agree on Fox HD.

Thanks!

Condo associations cannot dictate what you use-the Federal Communications Commission has ruled on that. The best setup would be a Channelmaster UHF CM4228 antenna with a preamp to boost signal and rotor to get the best signal. You can get everything you need at reasonable prices at www.starkelectronic.com sent right to your door. Their phone # is on their site. Tell them what you are doing and they will recommend a setup. I have the 4228 myself in Massachusetts and it works nicely with an added preamp and the rotor for aiming. Radio Shack has a small amplified round omnidirectional antenna that should be mounted outdoors that you could try first, and return if it isn't sufficient. I have this setup at my winter home in N. Fort Myers and it is fine for the Fort Myers stations.

Marc,

Here are the signal maps for the main stations in our area:
WBBH-DT
WZVN-DT
WFTX-DT Has Construction Permit for DT
WTVK-DT
WGCU-DT
WRXY-DT Running under DT Special Temporary Authority, has Construction Permit for DT
WINK-DT (Projected) Has DT Construction Permit

To select an antenna for you I suggest visiting AntennaWeb.org. This great website will tell you what antenna type you need to get each station. The antenna manufacturers use a color code system to tell you what aerial type you need, this website tells you the color code you need for each station.

I live in North Cape Coral near the towers in Charlotte, so I my set of rabbit ears which is capable of getting stations that AntennaWeb tells me are yellow. Since all my locals are yellow, I get them all over-the-air with just rabbit ears. However, Marco Island is far away.

Here is an example of what I would see on the box of my rabbit ears:

Glenns1939 and CapeFish,
Thanks for the info. I am going to check into the antenna options. So far as I mentioned, ABC, NBC and Fox as well as the WB work pretty darn well. GCU and the rest are just weak signals. I am in Naples Near I75 off Pine Ridge. I just got myself the new Philips HD/Tube with the built in ASTC/QAM tuners. The QAM DOES work, I do get GCU, ABC and NBC, but no FOX. So it seems that C*mc*st is pushing digital through it's basic cable without a box. Very interesting indeed!

If you can get some with the cable and some with the rabbit ears....I would be fine with that.

FOX is over-the-air only.
NBC, ABC and PBS are on OTA and cable.
CBS is not on the air yet, cable should be coming soon.
WB and WRXY are over-the-air only.

If your TV has the ATSC/QAM tuner then I would just switch the feed when you want to catch different events. Easier than installing an outside antenna and rotating it as needed to get the channels you want to watch.

Regarding FOX 4. I had problems sometime ago with the same thing and discovered it was an antenna aiming problem. FOX4 seems to be extremely sensitive to antenna aiming. Signal meter was the only way I could assure I had a good signal.

2.3 WPBT2-3(Miami?)
2.4 WPBT2-4
2.5 WPBT2-5
4.1 WFOR (Miami?!?)
5.1 WPTV (West Palm Beach?!?)
6.1 WTVJ (Miami-Ft. Lauderdale?!?)
6.2 NBC Weather Plus?!?
39.1 WBZL (Hollywood, FL)

what about 29.1 and 29.2 ( fox west palm beach and the tube music channel)?
i can receive these channels with better luck than i have trying to get 26 and 30 from ft myers!
i live in eastern lehigh acres about 20 minutes from the hendry county line. my antenna was at 35 ft,but, even with guy wires, the mast poles bent a little so i lowered it down to about 20 ft. this week alone i have received those same channels you spoke of and a few more. channel 10 wplg, 27.1 ( 42 pbs from wpb )
33.1 i believe it's wtvx and 2 spanish channels along with channel 25 from west.

there was one night last week that i lost all miami and ft myers locals and tampa, orlando and daytona locals were burning the signal strength meter right off the top! ( literally )

Dennis Coverage on TV was pretty comprehensive.

NBC2 and ABC7 simulcast the analog signals on their second subchannel and those went as normal. The HD channels showed HD Network programs without any banners while in HD.

FOX4 had a storm box on the analog channel, but the digital channel did not. In fact FOX4 HD had no weather banners period.

WINK has no digital channel, but their analog channel had weather info too.

WTVK and WRXY have no weather departments and no weather banners.

WGCU had a radar box on their analog channel and it's digital simulcast on 30.2

thanks in advance

Hey Lehigh folks,

A buddy of mine just moved out of Fort Myers to Lehigh. Comcast is telling him that they do not offer HD out there? True? Any word when it might be available?

True, and that is why I have DirectTV. Depending on which CSR you get, he might be told that HD is available because I've been told both. The fact is right now, it is not available.

My wife drops off our bill (I kept Comcast for the H/S Internet) in person at the Lehigh Comcast office and they continually tell us that HD cable will be several years because "we have to rebuild the system," whatever that means. I trust them over what a CSR sitting in a Canadian call center tells me. The CSR's usually say HD is coming to Lehigh "soon." I'm very glad I didn't wait and have been pleased with DirectTV and our local OTA HD channels.

Peace,

DM

Hello All,

It's exciting to see what all you can get in this area with an antenna. So, after I bought our HDTV, I purchased a Channel Master 4228 with 4778 Pre amp. I also purchased, though not sure it's necessary, a Channel Master antenna Rotor 9521A.

I am at Pine Ridge and Hwy 41 in Naples - very close to the Waterside Shops. When I visit antennaweb, the majority of the stations appear to be to the north, and a handful to the southwest. So, I suppose I'll need the rotor, right?

Also, can anyone point me to a tutorial on installing a mast? I am thinking a mast would work well on our back wall with some braces to hold it off the wall and near where it meets the roof.

Not sure on the height. We have a few tall pine trees in the area, but there's no way I can shoot over them. I'd like it where the antenna is high, but not high enough to be seen on the street out front.

Any input would be much appreciated from anyone who has installed a mast, or similar setup. Thank you!

Kind regards,
Dave Jackson

my antenna is mounted outside between 20 and 25ft from ground! i'm thinking of replacing the antenna with either a CM4228 or an antenna's direct XG-91. i am curious if anyone else here in the ft myers/lehigh/cape coral/naples area is using either of these antennas?

Hi- I have a North Fort Myers location for a winter home, and have a Radio Shack round amplified antenna that works for me. Back home in Massachusetts, I have the CM4228 with a rotator and amp, and I love it. You can't go wrong with the CM4228, but if the stations you seek are in different directions you need the rotor, and the amp can't hurt, as you can trap any signal that is too strong, to compensate for the weak signals you need.

At my Moms place in Naples all she has is basic cable & the HD package. But, as of now, only ABC & NBC are available. Has anyone heard about when CBS will go live? CBS is supposed to provide Comcast a feed before it goes live OTA. FOX has no contract will Comcast, so you need OTA to get FOX.
