The ideal DX antenna would be on a rotor, be as high as possible, as high gain as possible and as directional as possible in order to pick out a signal from a particular direction in the presence of signals on that same frequency from other directions (as is the case in skip conditions).

The Channel Master 4228 is an 8 bay, plain and simple. 8bays have a characteristic forward lobe, along with smaller diagonal (butterfly) lobes, making it not-super-directional. Those side lobes make it more prone to pick up random DX than something more directional. But you'd certainly get better results with a directional antenna on a rotor. A preamp, particularly one of the lowest noise figure (like a Kitztech KT-200) would also help with weak signals (although it could also overload, depending on your proximity to local channels).

they probably were doing maintenance. I had RF29 (9-1,9-2,9-3) last night when I checked around 12:30AM but RF9 (9-4 Bounce, 9-9 FOX) showed no signal OTA.

Wasnt a Tivo problem

Thanks, I was worried TiVo messed up the channel frequencies.

It also showed that Comcast gets the feeds via fibre as Buzzzr was on during the "outage"

Did Anybody Just Lose Signal On 9-1?

As posted above, I am just wondering if anybody just lost signal on 9-1? It is still good on 9-9, though.

It is back now.

TiVo Roamio OTA 1 TB In The Minneapolis, MN - OTA Area

I am sure that I am not the only "cord cutter" in the Minneapolis-Saint Paul MN area. I had DISH Network for over 22 years. I liked their service, but it is/was pretty spendy. It wasn't until more recently that there have been as many other choices.

Anyway, I bought a TiVo Roamio OTA 1 TB recently when they announced that this included lifetime service. I was a bit concerned how well the tuners would work because since this area went from NTSC to ATSC, I have found that tuners can vary quite a bit in terms of sensitivity and ability to deal with MPDI (Multi Path Distortion Interference).

As it turns out, the Tivo Roamio OTA 1 TB has excellent tuners! I am in northern Rosemount (55068) with a Channel Master CM-4228 8 bay antenna in the attic area above my attached garage. While that certainly is NOT an optimum location for an antenna, it does keep my wife happy.

When the converter box program was around, I got several of the Zenith DTT901 Digital TV Tuner Converter Boxes because, at the time, they seemed to be the "gold standard" for tuners. Several of my televisions are Samsung and they, too, seem to have very good tuners, Despite that, the TiVo Roamio OTA tuners seem better than either the Samsung internal tuners or the Zenith tuner boxes. I can tune some of the low power channels on the TiVo Roamio that won't come in on the other devices.

The Roamio does have sensitive tuners in them but also note that the internal signal is split 4 ways (for the 4 tuners) so some weak signals may not come in as good. I have a Series 3 also and I've had good signal on the S3 that the Roamio had pixeling (due to the 4 tuners in the Roamio vs the 2 in the Series 3)

Early Sunday morning/late Saturday night was a good night for DXing here in Chaska

picked up KEYC Mankato on my Xg91 which is a UHF antenna (and aimed towards Minneapolis). Put my VHF only antenna up and it was a strong signal.
Oh the UHF got the 4 Eau Claire stations (WQOW ABC, WEAU NBC, WEUX FOX, WHWC PBS) and the 2 usual Rochester/Austin/Mason City ones (KAAL ABC and KIMT CBS)
On the VHF side picked up KCCO 7 in Alex. And when KEYC went off the air (they do sign off nightly) the Zenith converter box "burped" and in came KCCW Walker (!!!) As most folks know KCCO & KCCW are satellite stations of WCCO.
Also grabbed KSFY 13 in Sioux Falls

Thank goodness tomorrow is suppose to be nice out because looking at the listings I saw a unique situation

From noon-1PM on all 7 commercial stations (CBS, ABC, NBC, FOX, MY, CW, KSTC) there is paid programs on all of them!
I exempted Ion as they just use the national feed

Yes daytime weekend network TV is quite pathetic, when not outside or doing something else I like to watch one of the sub channels which rarely(if ever??) have those paid commercials! The sub channel thats probably on the most in my household is surprisingly enough Buzzr. I'm not so much into modern game shows but I kind of like the older ones, from the 50s through 80s.

Oh I know. I just noticed the uniqueness of that time frame that they all have paid programs. If it wasnt for the E/I on 5,9,11 and 23 they'd all have paid programs for TWO hours!

They **kinda** do the same thing Sunday from 11-noon except 11 has e/I and 23 has other shows but they are "paid programs" as in the owner of the show pays WUCW to be on there (like Tony Denucci's AWF Wrestling that is on at 11:30)

Buzzzr was OK but the repetitiveness is out of control. Its the same shows over and over. For me I like Laff, Cozi and AntennaTV. I wish Cozi and Laff were on a higher powered station (although the last couple days 43 has been stable enough to watch without having to resort to "Fox TV viewing position" (if you remember the old Married with Children joke).

I use a simple HBU22 outdoor antenna on my deck which works great for everything....unless 43 wants to be snooty. Then I have to hook up the giant XG91 that is higher up the pole to get 43 stable. But then other stations are glitchy or in some cases dont even come in.

Amazing that a little corrosion can kill a signal that quickly

So after the big storms last night (hope everyone is safe) I noticed I lost 43 (no worries...it comes and goes as it pleases) but a couple others were lower than normal. This morning 16,17,25,33,41 were all lower signal than normal. 43 was gone. Thought maybe water got in the connections. So swapped cable (its only 4 feet) and it helped a bit. So I thought "maybe the balun"? So I took it off and swapped it with a different one (both are same...outdoor models you get with TV antennas)

Bam! All signals back to how they should be. Noticed on the old one it looked "rusty"...but that balun has only been on that antenna for maybe 6 months. Weird....(and yes the coax side does have the rubber boot on it)

So if you experience signal issues...and you have one...check the balun

43's are having issues. Around 3:50 all the pictures disappeared yet there was still signal. A couple minutes later cozi and QVC came back but the rest are still out as of 6pm.

Long Distance TV reception (TV DXing) and antenna mount problem

Last week I put on the side of my home a ten foot pole with a rotor, a large UHF TV antenna, a large upper VHF TV antenna and an FM antenna. See pictures.

I'm located in Minnetona, MN near Highways 394 and 169. Over a period of two weeks I picked up the following out of town TV stations:
3-1 KIMT Mason City, Iowa RF 42
5-1, 5-7 KSTP via a repeater on RF 14
6-1 KBJR Duluth on RF 19
6-1 KAAL Austin, MN RF 36
8-1 WKBT La Crosse, WI RF 8
10-1 KTTC Rochester, MN RF 10
10-1 KWCM Appleton, MN RF 10
12-1 KCCW Walker, MN RF 12
12-1 KEYC Mankato, MN RF 12
13-1 WHO Des Moines IA RF 13
13-1 WEAU Eau Claire, WI RF 38
15-1 KSMQ Austin, MN RF 20
18-1 WQOW Eau Claire, WI RF 15
24-1 KYIN Mason City, IA RF 18
28-1 WHWC Menomonie, WI RF 27
31-1 WHLA La Crosse, WI RF 30
47-1 KXLT Rochester, MN RF 46
48-1 WEUX Chippewa Falls, WI RF 49

I also picked up a station on RF 21 which showed up as 2-3 but I don't know if that's a repeater for KTCI 2-3 or not. I didn't get the call letters.

Unfortunately the storm last Tuesday night blew over the antennas though they were not damaged. I put them back up using a different set of brackets but the next day which was only moderately windy, they blew over again.

I put these antennas up for the first time three years ago but took them down after about a month and stored them in my garage attic. Initially they were attached to the satellite dish bracket as shown in one of the pictures but I later move them to two wall mounted brackets near the roof peak. When I installed them again a couple of weeks ago I mounted a shorter pole to the antenna brackets, then connected the rotor to the short pole and put a 10 foot pole into the rotor and installed the 3 antennas.

I would like a recommendation for stronger brackets or a way to have the antennas be more resistant to wind.

That was probably the Frost, MN translator farm that CTV operates in Southern MN. Someone a couple weeks ago someone outside of MN was picked it up via e-skip and we couldnt figure it out as nothing matched up. He contacted CTV and they confirmed
It’s possible you were receiving RF channel 21 from Frost. 2.3 'tpt life' is carried on channel 21 there.
edit: You also mention getting 5-1 & 5-7 on RF14...thats the same translator farm

I don't want to use a tripod because I don't want to drill into the roof. What other options are there for wall mounted brackets?

Fleet Farm has a pair of wall mount brackets
http://www.fleetfarm.com/detail/rca-.../0000000033757

Otherwise Amazon has a plethora of options
https://www.amazon.com/s/ref=nb_sb_n...+mount+bracket

I havent used wall brackets at any time I had an antenna up. Always used tripod mounts until now in the apartment where I just put a couple hose clamps on the railing and mounted the antenna there (smaller antenna)

Well this week tops last week

Other than NBC which has golf the other 6 stations are doing it again (paid programs)
Since there is no network programming for CBS, WCCO is showing SIX hours of paid programs (from 11-5)

To top it off, at 12:30pm tomorrow five of the six commercial stations in the guide are showing the SAME paid program. Make $$ by flipping houses. The only one that it doesn't show that particular title is CW23 (but they still have paid programming).
