I just called the news room at WTKR. There is no one home in the Master Control Room. Guess us Steeler fans are out of luck for this one. Thanks!

Did you get Ted's voicemail? I'm wondering if anybody at Channel 3 knows there's a problem. Is 3 completely automated?

Some day maybe these things will b automated so we don't need to rely on a person to flip the switch. I'm just down the road...I'll go turn the HD feed on if there isn't anyone working there who thinks it's important enough

The game is definitly in HD on Diredtv channel 80 national HD feed. Fox 43 game also in HD. WTKR is SD and for some reason the PQ is terrible on my set.

You're very fortunate to get channel 80. It's on 98 right now (Ticket). I have a feeling it will be pulled at 5PM though...

It's on both east and west coast feeds. Maybe one of them will stay on it?

No! I talked to Jason in the newsroom. He said there was no one in Master Control.

I wonder if that is not some kind of FCC violation? I would think that a "qualified" person be on site at all time the station is broadcasting to address problems. Maybe WTKR's general manager is cost cutting to look good to his bosses????

I can understand and forgive technical problems but.......for it to be because of staff (or lack of) is unforgivable IMO.

If no one shows up, it'll stay in SD, I guess.

It's still on Channel 98 DirecTV... In the guide info, it usually says if the game is to be blacked-out. Not this time. I might be able to stick with DirecTV all evening. Whoa...

Never, never give up your directv. It's a lifesaver sometimes. That's why I kept the national feeds after the locals were offered. I just added the locals and kept the nationals. Good thing, they added the HD feeds on different channels and everyone who had the national feeds gets them also. I just wish FOX and ABC would jump on board with their HD.

It may be a transmission problem to the affiliates. I receive CBS channel 6 in Richmond, too. They are in SD. I do get CBS-HD East and West which do have it in HD.

Speaking of East and west local channels on D*. Does anyone in hampton roads get those locals in HD on D*? Mine are blacked out. Do I have to order those seperately or is it a contract issue?

There are no locals in HD on D*. You need a waiver from the local affiliate to receive a national feed. Do a search as this topic has been exhaustively written about.

Directv provides the locals in Hampton Roads on Directv channels 3, 4, 10, 13, 15, 27, 33, 43 and 49. All are SD and available to anyone with Directv service.

For those subscribers with waivers CBS east & west, NBC east and west, ABC east and west and Fox east and west SD are provided. Currently CBS and NBC HD east and west are available for those with the waivers and have the Directv HD package. FOX and ABC are not offered in HD as of yet.

I think WTKR and Tribunes? other stations are done remotely from New York. I remember Ted saying something to that effect.

Ted has posted something about CSI a couple days ago but has not commented at all about the NonHD on CBS for football since Thanksgiving!

I'm going to step up to the plate for Ted as he may not post a reply after everyone has already judged and sentenced him: The New York Times has a Digital Operations Center (DOC) that is housed on a separate floor of 720 Bousch Street. The DOC runs the Master Control operations for all of its eight television stations. The DOC is a separate division of the NYT broadcast group. They do not routinely report to Ted or take direction from him. He will - most assuredly - have a discussion with them regarding this and other similar events. This incident, if it was not a network problem, is not Ted's fault! You guys really need to cut the man some slack.

Did you guys get waivers or didn't even bother because we have OTA antennas?

I doubt it has anything to do with OTA antennas. Where is the value added for local affiliates in granting any kind of waiver for a national feed? It bypasses their revenue source....local advertisers. They won't fall on their own swords here or anywhere else.

My comment was in no way directed at Ted who I believe does a very good job. One person (Ted) can't possibly do it al 24/7. It's directed at the management of WTKR. It is the responsibility of the General manager to insure the station is staffed with people knowledgable in the operation so that when abnormal incidents happen they can at least try to correct them. Even if the operation is run out of NY and the station personnel have no control then a phone call to the GM of WTKR should prompt a high level call to the operations center in NY. Not just sit back and point the finger northward.

I have to disagree with you. Id much prefer 1080i and WTKR turning off all the subchannels for the superbowl. It would trounce what Fox sends the affiliates for NFL at 15 mbps.

We are experiencing a problem with our WAVY-DT HD encoder. The video and audio should be unaffected, but the EIA-708B digital closed captioning is dead at the moment. To repair it we are going to have to change some hardware and update some software, and as a result there might be periods tomorrow or tomorrow night where there could be interruptions of service.

Please, tell me why you chose my post to respond too. I sure did not direct that post to you or Mr. Hand. I just responded to VARTV question. There were certainly more derogatory post to select from. Glad to see that nothing has changed.
