Lost two more analog TV signals as channels 23 (WAVY simulcast) and 35 (WAVY simulcast) are now digital - doing NBC and BounceTV on the dot 2's... Channel 51, which was doing religious programming, now just has a static image of " *** VIDEO TROUBLE *** " Their main channel went digital a month ago...

I've never understood the reason for WAVY's simulcast. They got a nice non-DA signal from the Driver antenna farm. Do they really need these low power signals to supplement what's already well-covered?

Need? I really doubt it. Must be reason they are keeping these signals. They are NOT free to run...

That or spectrum. FCC is considering repacking the TV channels (above 31???). This keeps WAVY/WVBT with some options in the future...

WVEC Issues

Until very recently, I had no trouble pulling in WVEC at 13.1, even on my $15 DIY Hoverman-Gray antenna mounted upstairs (~20ft) next to a west-facing window. Now all of a sudden in the past 2-4 weeks (unknown as I was out of town), I can't even get a signal.

Any insights from the community would be appreciated. I'm in the Great Neck area of Virginia Beach.

WVEC Problem

I live in Great Neck Estates. Though I have an roof antenna, it's for emergency "FiOS failure" use. So, I queried a neighbor who is entirely OTA and she says 13.1 is a problem and has been "for some time" Can't over any insight beyond that. I know that with her roof top she pulls in 20+ channels. So did I the last time I used it.

Any chance that something grew - bloomed while you were gone and blocked a previously clear LOS?

Thanks for the reply. It's certainly possible that the trees in full bloom ~75yds west are now causing issues with WVEC, though it wasn't a problem last September and the trees don't appear to have grown that much. I'm going to try setting the antenna up in the attic and see if I have any better luck. It's about 10 ft. higher than where it currently is.

I am also able to pull in 20+ channels, even some troublesome ones for others in the area, just not pesky 13.1.

I'll post results of moving the antenna if I get anywhere tomorrow.

Lifting the antenna into the attic worked great for almost every other station, except 13.1 WVEC. I've got between 90-100% on strength, signal, and symbol quality across the board, and I'm pulling in the other majors from the Norfolk area flawlessly.

I can't imagine what WVEC did at the beginning of the summer to cause this, but I find it hard to believe that I'm getting other VHF-Hi stations with the quality that I am WITHOUT getting 13.1 WVEC.

I'm guessing e-mailing and asking them won't do me any good? Might as well try at this point. College football is imminent, after all.

It might. They wouldn't have listed this if they didn't want to hear from viewers: technicalproblems@wvec.com

Success!

Mr. O'Malley was quite helpful and responded immediately when I e-mailed him. Unfortunately he couldn't shed light on any technical reason why my reception would have stopped suddenly at the beginning of the summer, so I'm chalking it up to interference along the line of bearing for WVEC.

Fortunately, I had been meaning to build a VHF-specific antenna. I ended up making a DIY 23" copper loop antenna that worked like a charm. The weird part was that I had to point it 45 degrees off from the direct heading between myself and WVEC.

Oh well, it works again! Just in time for football. Thanks to everyone in the forum who assisted.

3-1 is still down. I "think" DIRECTV is getting the picture from 27-2 which is now the SD version of WTKR 3-1...

Has anyone noticed issues with WGNT & their audio lately? It seems like all of the channels aren't coming through.

WVBT Reception issue VB

Good morning, newbie to the forum!

I am relatively new to the VA Beach area and purchased a cheap 1byone window antenna to get me a few OTA channels until my family moved up the area with me. I got all the major networks except ABC (VHF), albeit with some intermittent signal during inclement weather. Our plan was to get Dish since my wife is Japanese and they have NHK, but there is no line of sight to the satellite, so we decided to cut the cable and go with a larger antenna/Tablo/SlingTV.

Based on a friend's recommendation, I purchased a ChannelMaster CM4228-HD multi-directional antenna and was pleased to get the VHF channels, but get NO reception for FOX (43.1). As I mentioned, the antenna is in the attic (35' about ground) on a PVC pole and i ran a coax from the antenna into the existing cable lines (goes through multiple splitters so maybe thats why?), pointing in the same direction as the window antenna (which gets an intermittent signal today). FOX is probably a the channel I use most (football on Sundays) so not having it is a major decision point before committing to the $300 Tablo set up...

Seems strange that i don't even get an intermittent signal, even with rotating it 15-20 degrees each way. According to all my research, this antenna SHOULD reach for Fox and the FCC website shows coverage at my house... Looking at the FCC transition map, my area is shaded yellow for FOX, so maybe there is interference from local military bases?

Any help or input would be much appreciated! Thanks in advance.

-Chris

Splitters will definitely degrade signal strength. I also originally had my ChannelMaster installed in our attic on a PVC pipe and had a hard time with WVBT's sister station WAVY/10 (RF31). Turning the antenna would get me WAVY but I would lose others. I took it off the pipe and sat it (and still does) some empty plastic containers leaning against a rafter. The picture below is old but this is what I did...

I get 2 (PBS-NC), 3 (CBS), 4 (IND), 10 (NBC), 13 (ABC), 14 (HSN), 15 (PBS-VA), 17 (NBC), 19 (REL.), 21 (TBN), 23 (NBC), 25 (Daystar), 27 (The CW), 33 (MNT) , 35 (NBC), 38 (REL.), 43 (FOX), 45 (FOX), 49 (ION), and 51 (NBC)...

Thanks. I will have to try that. There was a signal booster box that I ran the coax through and isolated the line to 1 TV and was getting great service with minimal skips on 43 (Fox), however, tonight all channels are not even watchable due to signal drop out. Haven't changed anything else since yesterday either. Frustrating to say the least. I'll try removing from the pole at least!

Prepping for the cable cutting (Cox). Tweaked my CM-4228 to about 270 deg. All channels coming clear except WAVY 10-1. 17-1 WKTD is crystal clear. Whoops I just noticed 17-1 is also WAVY.

Baycliff, in the attic. Tv scan came up with about 35 channels, I deleted about 12 of them.

I have to tweak the antenna mount, currently hanging by 2 small chains fron the rafters.

Nothing wrong with that. I have the same antenna as you sitting on top of some plastic Rubbermaid storage containers. Can you hang the antenna from different rafters?
