I find it sad that for a city the size of Bakersfield, we have such a pitiful array of digital channels. It's almost as sad as the complete ghost-town nature of this thread.

Do you receive any adjacent markets such as LA or other areas?

At my house, I am able to receive KMPH Fox 26-1 Fresno. This station transmits from Visalia. I am not able to receive any other broadcasts from other markets.

You have more digital channels and especially HD channels in English than El Paso, Texas, a city of 650,000 people. We do not get MyNetwork in HD and you have KCET as a non-profit. We do have more channels on the air if you count all of the ones that broadcast from Juarez, Mexico.

Gentlemen, any updates on what could be get in the Kern County area? First of all, greetings to all from North Kern County. Any feedback given would truly appreciated.

My Situation, I live in Wasco, about 30 miles North of Bakersfield. Fresno/Visalia stations are 67-100 miles from my physical location. My questions.

1. Will I be able to get most/many of the Fresno stations with a good Outdoor Antenna?

2. What Antenna and setup is recommended for maximum signal strength and quality?

3. I have a clear view of the Northern, Southern and Western skies, but the East is blocked by 30+ feet  trees. Will this really affect my reception that much?

TVfool.com lists that I could get over 50 channels easily with an outdoor antenna. It would be nice to get all those channels, but is that a reality? You folks in Kern County, Bakersfield Metro area get that many channels? I'm new to all this and any advice would be appreciated.

Thanks

Wow, it's good to see this thread resurrected. We get almost no traffic here.

From Wasco, you have a reasonable chance of getting the Fresno Stations and the Bakersfield stations, but not sure if you can get them all at once. You may need an antenna rotator. With a good North view, you could probably get the Fresno stations. Check with that thread (not sure if you have) to see any recommendations there. You definitely have better luck getting the Bakersfield stations, though. You're about 50 miles from the towers, a little Southeast of Wasco.

My recommendation is always the outdoor antenna, but you might have some luck with an indoor antenna, as well. Some folks do, depending on your house (mine is stucco, so the signals got absorbed in the walls). I have an RCA outdoor antenna (ANT751R) that I picked up for a good price at Lowes.

I don't think the trees will impact you that much, but who knows? Try it out. Good luck!

Back in the 1980's my parents had an old outdoor Antenna which they used. I got it out of the garage and put it back up. With that antenna I get

17.1- NBC: Digital

17.2- CW

17.3-Telemundo

19.1-Estrella

26.1-Fox

26.2-This TV

29.2-CBS

31.1-Uni Mas: Digital I think

31.2-Uni Mas

39.1- Univision: Digital

39.2-Univision

45.1-UPN

50.1-Catholic Church Channel

58.1-Fox: Digital

58.2- FOX

61.1- Another Uni Mas Digital Channel

Even though the signal itself is only 70% in the strongest Channel, the quality bar is at 100% and the signal is crystal clear even at 70% strength. I guess quality is greater than strength? I also found some old rabbit ears antenna and hooked that up to another tv. The other tv will only show strength of antenna not quality. I get all the channels above +

18.1

18.2

18.3

23.1-ABC

23.2-Azteca

23.3-Vme

46.1- French News

46.2

46.3

46.4- Japanese Channel

The issue with the indoor antenna is that the signal drop a lot. I only get those channel some of the time where with the outdoor antenna I get those channels all the time and the signal stays the same through out the day. Ideally I would like get all those Channels constantly through out the day.

I noticed surround sound on 17.1 KGET OTA while watching Blacklist this week. After that I started paying attention and my receiver stays at Dolby 5.1 for most NBC prime time content now. If it's been available for very long then they have a real dearth of shows that utilize it.

Now if only KBAK and KERO would join the band wagon. Person of Interest in full surround could be amazing.

I noticed this as well recently, and it's great news! Football season is over, but it would have been nice for KBAK to have jumped on the bandwagon. The Super Bowl is on FOX this year, so we're already set on KBFX.

Apparently they flipped the HD switch to CW on 17.2 recently as well. 17.2 picture quality was so bad that I've been suffering through CW.com for "Arrow", but after the website dropped the last minute of last weeks episode, I checked the DVR and was stunned to not see the horrible picture that I was expecting.

That's excellent news. 17.2 has been atrocious for so long, that I can't remember the last time I bothered tuning in.

Azteca is now in 720p HD on 23-2. NHK World is now 720p HD on KCET's translator on 46-4. Low power UniMas 31 has added a subchannel. Get TV is on 31-2. The SD simulcast of UniMas on KUVI RF45 is now mapped to virtual channel 31-3. Azteca and NHK World are still SD onlyon Bright House cable, and Get TV is not on Bright House. The former analog low power channel 47 has switched to digital and has moved to channel 27. Low power channel 41 has also switched to digital on the same RF channel. Both are showing the same infomercial in SDl (via Corner Store TV I think) with no other subchannels. What a waste! A new low power station, KXBF-LD channel 14 is now on the air, showing Biz TV in SD on 14-1. The interesting thing about this station is that it is Bakersfield's first and so far only tv station that was digital only from day one; it never had an analog signal. All of our other digital tv stations, full and low power, once broadcasted in analog (not necessarily the same channel as their current RF digital channel).

How can we say "the digital transition is complete" when thousands of low power stations are still broadcasting in analog?

I'm having difficulty picking up 18.1 from my house. Does anyone else have issues with this channel? It's obviously being located, as it populates in my TV's channel sweep, but when I tune in I just get a black screen (which is slightly better than "no signal", I guess).

Do you get the Fresno stations? I am 89-140 miles north of the Fresno towers and can pick up almost everything from Fresno.

If anyone in here can pick up Fresno stations as well, 20 new digital channels are coming, 10 are already on. 6 are coming tomorrow, and 4 coming soon.

Fresno Bee story:
http://api.viglink.com/api/click?format=go&jsonp=vglnk_jsonp_13953436021357&key=8ed87cf665c99ed92e8aecbeb07ca6d1&loc=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.avsforum.com%2Ft%2F319177%2Ffresno-ca-hdtv%2F1740%23post_24507931&v=1&libId=ef43336b-dcb9-4a2a-ad42-914c7b418580&out=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.fresnobee.com%2F2014%2F03%2F18%2F3829678%2Fventura-boss-ventures-into-larger.html&ref=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.avsforum.com%2Fusers%2Fsubscriptions&title=Fresno%2C%20CA%20-%20HDTV&txt=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.fresnobee.com%2F2014%2F03%2F18%2F3829678%2Fventura-boss-ventures-into-larger.html

For what it's worth, although I am out of normal range of Bakersfield TV, the slightest inversion brings them in, pretty much nightly, for hours at a time. Since the PSIP maps all over, I'll list the rf channels. I get 19, 29, 31, 33, and 45, 185 miles north in Newman (just south of Patterson).

I had good (but temporary) reception this morning (0645) from Bakersfield on KBTF, KABE, and KUVI. That's about 170 miles from my location.

Lots of changes to Bakersfield OTA. LP 34 is off the air. LP 36 is mapping to virtual 34! Bounce is gone. Movies is on 34-2. Son Life is on 34-6. Live Well is gone and MeTv is on 23-3(I would much rather have The Cool Tv back). Get Tv is on 31-2 and Escape is on 31-3. KBAK's simulcast of KBFX FOX on 58-2 is now in HD. 2 HD feeds of FOX. 58-1 on RF 29 is better quality due to having more bandwidth. I wonder if Sinclair is going to sell KBFX's license in the spectrum auction. I suppose if RF channels above 30 go away that they will then move KBAK to RF 29. Maybe Scripps will never build digital RF 23 and they will continue running both ABC and Azteca in HD on RF 10. What might Univision do if they are forced to clear RF 31, 39, and 45? They currently have a construction permit for RF 16. Maybe they will put KUVI with 2 HDs on RF 16 and put one HD and the SD subchannels on RF 4 (currently analog). Cocola would be left with RF 12. KCET's translator would have to move off RF 46 maybe to RF 23 and then 31+ would be cleared for more high speed mobile internet and OTA TV will be all overcompressed 2 HDs on most RF channels.

How can we say "the digital transition is complete" when thousands of low power stations are still broadcasting in analog?

Bright House remapped all clear QAM channels. They now map to the same virtual channel as OTA except KCET maps to 28 (same as the OTA of the parent station) and NHK World is 28-3 instead of 28-4. ShopHq, the educational access channel and the government access channel are no longer carried in analog but are now carried in clear QAM on 10-1, 15-1 and 16-1 respectively.

How can we say "the digital transition is complete" when thousands of low power stations are still broadcasting in analog?
LOW POWER ANALOG NEEDS TO DIE NOW!!!

Thanks for that listing. It'll help me keep things sorted up here between markets.
