When I last heard from KNWA, they said the digital transmitter for 24 would be up by the end of August, I wonder if once the deal with Mission goes thru we will get HD fox up in NW Ark, or if it will only be the coverage area of analog 24...July 28th I think was the latest date for KNWA to be OTA on 51-1.

I have KNWA on Cox channel 980 here in river valley. It is not HD, but is SD that is stretched to fill the screen. But it's better than our regular KNWA on channel 11 because that has sync audio problems along with a choppy video.

The coverage area for KFTA-DT (which will be fox after the nexstar/mission deal goes through) includes most but not all of NW Arkansas:

It appears that NBC-HD will not be available OTA in Ft. Smith from KNWA-DT:

When analog goes dark in Feb, 2009, KFSM's coverage area will shrink in the easward & westward directions, and shift to the north, to include less of the river valley and more of NWA:
KFSM Analog coverage map:

KFSM-DT Digital coverage map:

Several River valley towns will lose KFSM OTA reception.

I get KFSM here in the Harrison area with a signal in the 70's. So the computer graphic is probably a little conservative.....The signal from KFSM is even a little stronger than the one from KHOG.

I am hoping to have the same luck with KNWA. I receive their analog the best of the all the stations in the Fayetteville market....KFSM's analog is non existent here.....

Arkie,
You will likely have no problems getting KNWA-DT.

I and others in the Eureka Springs area are waiting for LPTV station K18EG to move from ch18 to ch22 so we can watch KFSM-DT, which is also on channel 18. It's amazing that KFSM's consulting firm chose channel 18, which was already in use in their proposed coverage area.

Several people in Carroll County filed interference complaints with the FCC to get K18EG to move to another channel. Currently, we can't watch KFSM-DT.

Still has a major video / Audio sync problem on tonights local news cast.....

On another note, a quick scan of the cox cable side shows 108.2 as KNWA.

Not to look a gift horse in the mouth, but it looks as if, thus far, KNWA is simply broadcasting a digital, stretched version of their SD signal.

According to the NBC website, Leno is supposed to be in HD. Last night, it was only the stretched SD.

Yes. I get KYTV-DT, too and Leno looks OK. But with UPN-15 on 3-2 and NBC WeatherPlus on 3-3, KYTV-DT is multicasting too much to do HD justice. It looks more like good DVD quality than HD. In fact, WNBC-DT on D* looks sharper than KYTV-DT, and D* downrezzes WNBC-DT from 1920x1080i down to 1280x1080i

So I would rather watch NBC-HD on KNWA when they finally get on the air because (at least at first) they won't multicast. Nexstar stations do not carry NBC WeatherPlus.

I tried to watch KNWA last night, and after all the hype, the PQ is awful and the audio sync is so bad it looks like a dubbed Japanese movie. If that's NBC's version of HD I'll stick to ABC and CBS.

I didn't watch it very much last night but for the few minutes that I watched it, it looked like a standard def image stretched to fill the screen.

I knew the type of stuff they were showing (news clips) couldn't be in HiDef and therefore should be in 4:3.

I'm sure they'll get it together shortly.

Over the last month or so, I've really been noticing audio sync problems on my standard def TV.

Well tonight KNWA seems to be digital for their standard program (news) and HD for the network programs. Local news was very crisp and sharp, audio still out of sync. I am disappointed in the network HD quality, it just doesn't have the same "jump out at ya" like ABC or CBS does.

Got a new Sony HD DVR last night and scanned for channels and found that 3 new digital stations are now broadcasting in our area. They are 26.1, 26.2 and 26.3. Labeled OPT 1, OPT HD and Create. Anyone know what the OPT stands for? Also, noticed they stopped broadcasting at 10 pm each night.

OPT = Ozarks Public Television
It's in Missouri and broadcasts on KOZJ-DT 26-n from Joplin and KOZK-DT 21-n from Springfield. They are not new stations and they don't cease broadcasting at 10pm.
Station and program info can be found at:
http://www.optv.org/

dmix00,
What kind of antenna are you using?

Thanks for the info. Have not been able to pick up the broadcast of the 3 stations over the past 3 days. Not sure what happened.

I am using the indoor powered RCA antenna (ant706) mounted on the rafters in my attic. I think they cost about $70-80 at Wal-Mart or Best Buy.

Another interesting thing I noticed with my new Sony HD DVR (hdd250 model) is that it tunes in the HD channels that are sent by cable as well as the over the air signals. (So I get KNWA and I can confirm that the news broadcasts are out of sync with the audio).
In each case the over the air is a clearer picture and less compressed. I get about 88% signal strength over the air and about 83% by cable on the same stations. I think it has a QAM tuner that allows this. It also has a cablecard slot that I am not using (yet).

Yes. QAM is the digital cable system. You do not need a cablebox or cablecard to tune unencrypted QAM cable channels; just a QAM tuner. The FCC requires cablecos to not encrypt local OTA digital channels they carry.

The stations you were picking up were due to Tropospheric Ducting present with certain atmospheric conditions. It usually happens in the mornings or evenings and mostly in summer months. Here's a site with forecast maps of tropo reception:
http://www.dxinfocentre.com/tropo.html

If you had a decent outdoor antenna and preamp, you could possibly pick up a lot more OTA channels. What model is your sony DVR?

I have the Sony DHG-HDD250. It tunes in Digital over the air, Analog over the air, Analog Cable, QAM Cable and can use a cablecard. The units are discontinued and hard to find. Was at Circuit City on Tuesday and asked how much their units were and they said they were not for sale, just demo units. The guys in there told me the cable cos. had pressured Sony not to produce any more of these units. That made me determined to get one. Did find a few left at Best Buy, and bought one the next day. Mainly got it so I could time shift HDTV and not pay an extra fee to the cable cos to do so.

With the added boost you have with your antenna, how many digital stations can you receive? I currently get 5.1, 5.2, 13.1, 13.2, 13.3, 13.4, 29.1 and 39.1.

Thanks for the DVR info.

I get the stations you posted, with the exception of KFSM-DT (5-1 & 5-2). I cannot get those due to interference in my area from a LPTV station broadcasting on the same channel as KFSM-DT. I also get the following from Springfield, MO:
NBC-HD 3-1
UPN 3-2
NBC WeatherPlus 3-3
KOZK-DT (OPT/PBS)
21-1
21-1
21-3

Depending on where you are (altitude, terrain, obstructions, etc.) and how high your antenna mast is, you may be able to get some stations from Springfield or Joplin. Some people in NWA can also get Tulsa.

Kind of off topic, but I noticed several ads in today's Sunday Democrat-Gazette about KNWA's new FOX channel 24 hiring for their upcoming 9pm news broadcast. Maybe it will be on the air in HD in time for the new FOX season.

KFTA's (24 analog/27 digital) Special Temporary Authorization to operate at low power ends July 1, 2006, so maybe they'll be full power soon.

EDIT:
I emailed KNWA asking when KFTA-DT will:
1. Go Full Power.
2. Go HD.
3. Switch to Fox.

The reply said "August 28th"

It seems almost too good to be true. The Big 4 all in HD before Labor Day. I'm almost afraid to get my hopes up.

I'm in Fort Smith and I have noticed that just about every time KAFT is showing something in HDTV, the Cox KAFTHD channel just shows a graphic saying it is temporarily off line and to check back later. If I go to the SD channel it's fine.
Last night I saw a Garbage concert on and the HD channel was just not online.
Anyone else notice this?

Must be a cableco problem. HD is fine OTA.

Do you have an OTA antenna? If not, get one, and eliminate a source of trouble (the cableco).

KFTA/KNWA

According to an article about KFTA in Tuesday's newspaper, "...Mission will use KNWA's digital broadcasting tier to transmit KFTA's signal in northwest Arkansas, and Nexstar will use KFTA's tier to do the same in the Fort Smith region."

NBC as a subchannel in the Fort Smith area, and Fox as a subchannel in NWA ?
