The Morning News.

Quick Summary. Marty Houston is the station manager (KFTA, channel 24) and is already working. Offices in Ft. Smith with 5 more employees joining him soon. 2 reporters will cover Ft. Smith, 9:00 news. Office needs work. Goal is to launch by Aug 28, but work must be done. Will be launching as Fox network affiliate.

Quote
"Mission will use KNWA's digital broadcasting tier to transmit KFTA's signal in Northwest Arkansas, and Nexstar will use KFTA's tier to do the same in the Fort Smith region. As for conventional broadcasting, KFTA will use it only in the Ft Smith region and KNWA only will use conventional broadcasting in Northwest Arkansas. Both channels will be carried on local cable systems and satellite television services."

By "conventional" do you mean analog?

That's why I quoted from the newspaper. Clear as mud, huh?

I assume conventional is analog. I also noticed the word digital, not high definition was used.

KNWA ch 50 in Rogers will probably carry NBC in (bit-starved) 1080i HD, and FOX in 480i.
KFTA ch 27 in Ft Smith will probably carry FOX in 720p and NBC in 480i.

FOX-720p HD will likely look better than NBC 1080i-HD, due to the bit starving from multicasting.

So what will happen to Fox on channel 48? Located around Cookson,ok in which it is the same as 46, but 48 covers northern sequoyah county (I say covers cause it does have prob with the signal it sends and goes offline alot of times ) and southern cherokee and adair, its a low power transmitter. We already have to watch upn and nbc from tulsa cause there is no other service, channel 24 nbc hardly works at all.

Not very friendly for those of us her prefer our HD OTA, not via cable. I wonder if NWA Arkansas can tune in ch 27 with an upgraded antenna. Currently, I've been able to use an inexpensive indoor antenna for ABC and CBS HD.

Welcome to the forum, Random06.
What are the call letters of the channels 46 and 48 in question?

With a good antenna, you may be able to get NBC & FOX on KFTA or KNWA when they get on the air and at full power. Click on the station call letters for coverage areas maps. Depending on terrain, coverage often extends beyond what is shown on these maps.

Most of NWA shouldn't have a problem getting KFTA-DT.

I am on the border of the blue line, so I assume I will get it. Any updates on the quality of the KNWA HD broadcast on cable? any changes since they first went live in terms of tweaking the picture or sound?

nj829,
Can you currently receive KSFX analog ch 27 from Springfield?
If you can, that will probably cause a co-channel interference problem with KFTA-DT 27. I get KSFX 27 pretty well, so I doubt I will be able to get KFTA-DT until analog shuts down. :-(

I can get it somewhat in the evenings if I adjust for it properly, but there is definite snow involved with the picture. I didn't even think of that being the issue. Should be interesting to see what happens now!

Yes, it will be interesting when KFTA-DT 27 goes full power.

I still have co-channel interference from LPTV K18EG in Eureka Springs. Even with the antenna aimed off-axis, K18EG comes in snowy, but still strong enough to kill KFSM-DT. Only time I can get KFSM is when lightning knocks K18EG off the air.

I wish stations would do a better job of researching co-channel interference, and the FCC would do a better job of assigning channels.

Thanks..

K48FL is the call letters of the 48 (analog) which is Fox I guess its a repeater at low power and is supposed to serve us out here , but its offline alot and has a poor picture even when your just 3 miles from it, As for HD I can watch 23 out of Tulsa with a signal of 59'ish, but with my little battery tv, its channel 48 or nothing.. I was just wondering what is going to happen to these low power things will they use them with HD? keep them analog or just drop their service?, I hope they are fixed ive called them in Fort Smith alot to tell them it was offline they didnt even know it was off for 3 weeks back in the spring. As for NBC it just doesnt come in here, I think NBC Tulsa analog comes in some here but thats about it. As for UPN ive never seen a clear upn, since the only upns are in Tul, Ptu, Fsm, and Fay.

Thanks

K48FL is a Low Power TV (LPTV) station owned by Equity Broadcasting in Little Rock. You can contact them about reception problems, but they probably won't do anything about it. Equity is not known for quality OTA TV.

K48FL is broadcasting with a directional antenna aimed at Sallisaw, so if you're North of the transmitter, you'll likely have problems receiving it.

Analog LPTV stations below channel 52 may continue broadcasting after 2/18/09, when all full power analogs will shut down. Many LPTV stations will probably "flash cut" to digital when they eventually convert. Some already have done so. There is no FCC requirement that they broadcast HD when they eventually go digital, and it's very unlikely that they will do so.

Some of you may have read an article in Saturday's Springdale edition of the Northwest Arkansas Morning News about the KFTA switch to FOX. Essentially it said that KPBI had filed a FCC complaint to try to delay or stop it. The article said that a similar complaint in the past delayed a change like this for something like 9 months. I emailed Blake Russell, VP and GM of KNWA and asked 2 questions. First, is this Friday the 28th still a firm date for KNWA OTA HD?
His response:

To Question 1- We are working around the clock to hit the
28th. That is my goal.

I also asked him whether the KPBI complaint would have any effect on the August 28th switch to Fox. His response:

To question 2-August 28 is firm on the switch...no
problem.

So - my panic after reading the article may have been for nothing ...

KNWA may be off the air today, for tower work and HD installation.
Article here.

The article only mentions the River Valley, so I wonder if they're referring to KFTA or KNWA?

As of 2:30 p.m. they're on the air on 27-1 here in the River Valley. Don't know how long they've been on the air today though. I couldn't see any difference in their signal, still 720 x 480i, and their PSIP still says it's KPOM.

can you give us an idea of signal strength? I will have to do a scan and see if I get anything up here in NW Ark on it. They didn't plan on having that one up until Aug 28th (according to an email I received a couple of months back), so I wonder if they are at full power, or just a test you are picking up.

arxaw, KNWA's programming note about HD installation might have been for KNWA-DT on channel 50. I can't get KNWA-DT here in Greenwood, but some in Fort Smith, Alma, etc. might. I haven't noticed any changes to KFTA-DT.

nj829, KFTA-DT, channel 27 (ex-KPOM-DT) has been on the air for at least a couple of years, mirroring KNWA's programming, but not in high definition. I don't think they're at full power yet. I do get a decent signal, usually 80 percent or better, with a signal strength comparable to KHOG-DT, channel 15, in Fayetteville 20 miles further north, if that helps. KFTA's antenna is located about 33 miles north of me and 50 miles due south of your zip code.

Ahh, between the note on KNWA and your report, I was thinking they were up and running on the new transmitter, but I knew that they had a low power running for the river valley. Just getting anxious to see how it all works out!!

Does anyone know what exact channel these 2 stations will be broadcast on when they start digital broadcasting over the air?

Is KNWA going to be 50 or 50.1?
Is KFTA 27.1, etc?

The actual (RF) broadcast channels will be:
KNWA-DT on channel 50
KFTA-DT on channel 27

It's up to the stations as to whether they will remap to their new digital or their old analog channel numbers. Example:
KNWA-DT (NBC) might be 51-1 or 50-1
KNWA-DT (FOX) might be 51-2 or 50-2

After analog goes dark, I think the FCC should make stations use their real RF channel numbers.

I'm new to posting, but been reading this forum for a while.

I'm a Cox Cable subscriber and use the HD/DVR Box to watch my HD. I don't know a lot about the other stuff you guys talk about, but I'd like to learn. I use this forum mostly to find out simply HD questions.

My first one, knowing my situation, what does this below mean to me?

"KNWA tentative on-air date: July 28th.
KFTA tentative on-air date: August 28th. "

Does it mean that the new Fox starts on 8/28? Will that be HD? What happens to KNWA tomorrow? I've been able to watch HD KNWA on 715.

Thanks for everyone's help.

"On-air" refers to Over The Air or OTA broadcasting, received with an antenna. It has nothing to do with cableco channels. Contact your cableco for channel info.

So nothing about KNWA will change for me tomorrow?

And I'll assume that Fox on the new station will start around 8/28?
