13-1 is the OVER THE AIR (OTA) channel. You need to connect an antenna to your TV and do a scan for OTA digital channels. See the setup menu in your TV.

There is an interesting letter from Nexstar to the FCC up on the arkansastvnews
blogspot com site

From this, it looks like KNWA is trying to be on OTA DTV by Sept 1st and
KFTA is labeled with a September 2006 start.

"Nexstar, the parent company of KARK/Little Rock and KTAL/Shreveport, is asking the FCC to grant them an extension in the deadline to up the power for some of its station's DTV signal. KTAL is one of those stations. Nexstar says can't afford to make the needed upgrades at the moment. "

They are claiming it will cost 48 million to upgrade all of its stations to DTV.

They wrote a nearly identical letter to the FCC, begging for a time extension for KOLR-DT, up in Springfield.

KNWA idiot:..."we are happy to announce that this [hd] has now become a reality...."

They need to do a reality check.

They obviously don't give a sh*t about their OTA viewers or they would've had this station up & running a long time ago.

Depending on elevation, you should be able to get ABC, CBS, PBS OTA from Fayetteville/Ft Smith area stations. NBC & FOX should be on the air by this fall.

The antenna/preamp below works very well in this area for those channels:
Channel Master CM 4228 antenna
Channel Master CM 7777 preamp

Go to http://www.antennaweb.org for a rough estimate of channels you may be able to get. Enter your complete address for a more accurate estimate. UNcheck the "send me info" boxes, so they won't send you emails, etc.

Just heard from KNWA's VP:

Hi Dwight,

July 28 was the target. We have had numerous vendors that
did not meet their delivery dates, which is something we
can't do anything about. I will not release a new launch
date until we have cycled the new facility and am sure
it's ready to go, which I hope will be within the next 2
weeks. I will update the website as soon as I am ready to
commit. We're building our new Fox HD facility at the
same time. You can appreciate the scope of the project.
Great things are worth waiting for! I appreciate your
e-mail.

Have a wonderful evening.

Blake Russell
VP/GM

I followed up his email and asked if Fox HD will have some shows broadcast in 720p or just 480p. Hope to hear from him soon so we can know if we are getting HD (instead of SD, as was rumored earlier) on Fox as well. Will post when I hear more.

All FOX network HD programming is 720p.

In all likelihood:
FOX on KFTA-DT 27-1 will be 720p.
NBC on KFTA-DT 27-2 will be 480i.

NBC on KNWA-DT 50-1 will be 1080i.
FOX on KNWA-DT 50-2 will be 480i.

KFTA-DT's 2 channels will probably look better than KNWA-DT's, since 720p needs less bandwidth than 1080i.

Interesting. Why would they bother broadcasting the 480i signals when we are already supposed to get the 720p and 1080i signals?

They're doing it to reach more viewers with both fox & nbc, because the transmitters for KFTA and KNWA are in different locations. KNWA doesn't reach all of KFTA's coverage area and vice-versa.

KFTA-DT ch 27

KNWA-DT ch 50:

I see, so depending on where you live you may or may not get the HD signal over the air. Do you expect to get both signals in HD (720p, 1080i)? Or only one of them in HD and the other in SD (480i)? (since you live further out)

I have no problem getting analog KFTA 24 because I'm on a hill. But I doubt I'll be able to get KFTA-DT 27 because of interference from another channel 27 (KSFX analog) in Springfield, MO, which I get very clearly on an analog TV.

After KSFX shuts down analog ch 27 in '09, I shouldn't have any problem getting KFTA-DT. Until then, I'll just watch FOX-HD on DirecTV, channel 88 - WNYW out of New York.

Yes, on Ch. 27. As I understand it, bare with me... we'll
have 720p.
Thanks,

Blake

So this confirms 720p for the new FOX station, which means we finally will see 24 in HD come January (or house, Prison Break, football). Surely they will have it up by then! So instead of watching NFL on FOX with the worst transmission quality of all time, it will finally be watchable!

If you're within the blue lines of the maps above, you should be able to get FOX in 720p & NBC in 1080i.

Unless of course, you have a giant hill in the way.

Hi Mark,

Cox will have both Fox (708) and NBC (715) in HD. Cox will continue to have KNWA and the new Fox will replace the existing Fox on Channel 12. Cox will move us to Channel 8 in the fall. KNWA's over the air HD should reach into the River Valley. KFTA (Fox) will broadcast KNWA on Digital 27-2 over the air. The new Fox will in fact, be fantastic. I hope I have answered your questions, if not, let me know.

Instead of trying to sort through all of the confusion online, I thought I would just come straight to the source. Once the new Fox affiliate goes live, will the Fort Smith area still receive KNWA NBC as well as the new KFTA FOX station? Also, will they both be available in High Definition from Cox? Finally, do you have an approximate broadcast date for the new FOX affiliate?

Speaking for everyone here, we are thrilled about the prospect of getting a new FOX affiliate. The broadcast quality on the one we have now is so bad that I often times will not watch that channel at all.

Thank you so much for your time!
Mark

I noticed that KPBI-CA 46 has an application in for a LP digital station on channel 44.

What's on KPBI (I can't get it OTA)? Is it still fox or what?

Good info on the new channel. Thanks. As of now, KPBI 46 is still announcing as Fox 46 and has the Fox logo on their picture.

Not sure what OTA will be.

In case you missed it...

From KNWA's website, posted today:

Quote:

Channel 51 Off Air

KNWA-TV is currently in the process of moving its over-the-air analog transmission facility (Channel 51)to a new location. The result of this move will enable us to
reach viewers that live in certain low lying areas that may have had trouble receiving us in the past. This only affects our over the air viewers in Northwest Arkansas.
We expect this move will take approximately 3 days. We appreciate your patience and apologize for the inconvenience.

My HD TiVo is still picking up a very strong digital signal on channel 50. Is anyone else seeing this?

I get no picture, and the channel identification is not received by the TiVo either. Perhaps they are testing their equipment?

I was scanning for the new channel yesterday, and noticed that it had stopped on channel 50 (which means it was picking up something), then when the scan completed it did not tune to 50. So something was there, just not a full signal yet.
