I broke down and bought an HD TIVO today and an outdoor antenna that I mounted in my attic. Here are the results from my house in Kennewick near Sunset Elementary:

11-1 KFFX-DT (FOX) No signal.

19-1 KEPR-DT (CBS) Strong digital signal, SD with lots of analog video noise that looks like it's in the source. No macroblocking unlike the DirectTV feed. Toss up as to which I'd rather watch, I hope they get this fixed.

25-1 KNDU-DT (NBC) Strong digital signal, HD looks really really good. No macroblocking, Guide information is wrong except during prime time, often says 'SIGN OFF'. Once the guide starts working right, I'll never have to watch the DirectTV feed again, hopefully.

31-1 KTNU-DT (PBS) Strong digital signal, HD looks really really good. I'll actually start watching PBS again.

42-1 KVEW-DT (ABC) Strong digital signal, SD looks really good. No need to ever watch the DirectTV feed again, hopefully.

watched leno last night in HD on charter 782. There was what looked like compression errors like on directv. but other than that it looked great. no program guide yet, but still looks good for the most part.

Yeah, I watched The Book of Daniel or whatever that show was. The PQ is not as good as DiscoveryHD, very grainy. Still better than the regular anlog channel and the nonHD shows look very good too. Hopefully, KNDU will give the main feed some more bandwidth, I know I am going to write them and let them know. Also going to let the local Charter office know in case its something on thier end.

I too am not very impressed with the HD PQ on KNDU. Not a good as HDNet or Discovery HD.

Got this e-mail back from KNDU's chief engineer recently. Might explain the reason for poor PQ.

"The HD resolution is 1080i with Dolby digital 5.1 channel audio. We use about 13 Mbytes per second to transmit the HD portion of the signal - the remaining 6 Mbytes is used to deliver 25.2 newscahnnel and the 25.3 Weather channel - both of those programs are 480i standard definition resolution. The time delay is the amount of time that the digital encoding takes to compress the 1450 MByte HD source stream down to the 13 MByte output and to combine it with the SD programs."

As far as I'm concerned, their weather channel can shut down. Maybe the extra bandwidth might help.

Also, in today's local paper, KEPR now says that they will have HD sometime this year after sending out e-mails say it won't be available for some 2 to 3 years. Amazing what a little competition will do. We know that KVEW will be in HD soon. Let's see what FOX will do.

Weird that some of you guys are getting 782 already. The channel does show up on my Charter listing, but it has no guide data and when I tune to it nothing shows up.

I'll have to call charter again about PBS HD. When I called they didn't say anything aobut having to pay an extra couple bucks per month. They said I should have it (I am subscribed to every channel.)

Well since the Seahawks are headed for the Superbowl, I shot a quick email to KVEW asking how they are doing. They said that they are supposed to get a part today(1/24/2006) and again next Tuesday(1/31/2006). If they get the parts on time and if they get configured like they should, we should see HD superbowl on Charter 780 and OTA. We can only hope and pray.

Watched Law and Order last night via my antennae on KNDU 25.1 the picture looked great!

I'm picking up a digital signal for all our "local" TV stations in Richland. The CBS (KEPR) still looks the worst. I'm picking up the digital FOX out of the Blue Mountains and the FOX digital looks better than my CBS.

I still haven't seen anything come up on 780 here in Tri Cities but I have seen KVEW adverstise the SuperBowl being available in High Def locally, so it's looking promising.

KVEW 42.1 is now broadcasting in HD, apparently at 720P. Picture looks great. Don't know if Charter is carrying it since I subscribe with D*.

Perhaps our local Fox and CBS stations might start feeling the pressure. Any bets?

I'll try Channel 42.1 later tonight. Maybe ABC will be on in time for the Superbowl?
I checked Channel 42.1 either yesterday or the day before and there was allot of noise coming through the audio section.

Yes, I also hope that the local CBS soon starts broadcasting in HD, but based on the quality (or lack thereof) of their current digital signal, I bet it will be a while. I also believe that the local CBS needs to move their tower to the same location as ABC, NBC, and PBS. As I wrote previously, I'm <10 miles from the CBS tower, and their signal strength is weaker than that of Fox (digital) which is over 70 miles away.

I turned it on and there is high definition currently showing....a basketball game. Picture looks great! Wow two new local HD channels in one week. Hopefully, the other two will soon follow suite!

Jim

Station engineer recently told me that KEPR's DT is transmitting with 10KV which makes their coverage quite limited. I'm out by the fairgrounds and my Sammy 360 won't accept the weak signal.

How does Charter Digital connect to your TV set? Does it connect via an HDMI or a DVI? Not that I'm interested in purchasing Charter cable, but I know a few people at work who are interested in HD, but don't want to place an antennae on their house.

Depends on which receiver you get. I have a Moxi HD DVR and it has DVI on the back. I use component cables and digital optical for audio.

yeah...grrrr. The HD DVR box they have, known as a Moxi Box, has the DVI, but its DISABLED!!! Along with the 4 USB2.0 ports AND an Ethernet port. The ethernet port isnt totally disabled, i get link on it, just does not do DHCP. Dont ask why they have the DVI disabled, I cant get a straight answer from anyone on this subject.

No KVEW 780 for me on Charter tonight in Richland.

It took a day or two for KNDU to show up on 782, so lets hope by Super Bowl it will be on Charter. If not, Im going to have to pickup a receiver for the big game....go hawks.

Are you sure DVI is still disabled? I thought it was enabled with version 3.2 software. Might want to check the Moxi thread on here.

And do you actually see anything on 782? I've had that channel listed for a week now but nothing is displayed if I go there. It just tells me that if I want to subscribe to the channel to call customer service. 780 doesn't show up at all yet.

If you get an OTA reciever, Radio Shack has one for $69.00 and from reviews else where on this web page, it sounds like a pretty good one, especially at that price, I am going to pick it up just in case I drop Charter. Yeah, I get 782, its NBC in HD for me, though most all of thier HD seems to start at 9pm with Law and Order. No 780 yet but I am very confident that Charter will have this for the Superbowl....or else.

What type of antenna's are you guys using to get all the digital channels? I live out in Burbank and was hoping to get all of them with 1 antenna.. But it's looking like I might need two.. One pointed at NBC,CBS,ABC,PBS and one pointed at FOX..

Also what kind of signal strength are you getting?

Anyone know of a good installer here in the Tri-Cities?

Thanks

Channel Master 4228. It's available at Solid Signal.com (I believe they're one of the forum sponsers). I'm picking up all of the digital channels using the one antennae. As previously stated, the KEPR (CBS) is the worst, but I believe it's due to their low signal strength and not due to my antennae.

Visit antennaeweb.org for aiming instructions.

You may need to power cycle your Moxi box. I use a cable card and I had to power cycle my TV to get 782 to come in.

I am about 15 miles South of Yakima and the transmitters. I found an article in Monday Jan. 30, 2006 edition of the Yakima Herald Republic that mentions the HD status for the local stations on page 8C. It should be also available for 2-4 weeks or so on the archives page online. In case you can't get to it on the Herald website, I will give you a summary of what it says.

The article overall appears to be a propaganda article for KNDO/KNDU just like the Tri-Cities Herald article was a few weeks back. The article states KNDO/KNDU are the first HD Stations in the area and how they wanted it up for the winter olmypics.

Then the article goes into the advantages of High Definition.

Finally they briefly mention the other locals KAPP ABC and KIMA CBS. The only mention of KAPP ABC is that they will be HD starting tommorrow which is Wed. Then they mention KIMA CBS will be this spring. The KIMA Gen. Manager says his engineers are telling him May, but he thinks it will be more like June. He also seems to mention that KIMA CBS will be full-power at that time. Finally, the article mentions in the last sentence that KYVE PBS already offers HD programming. No mention of the Fox station which isn't even digital in the Yakima area yet. Also no mention of UPN or The WB or the new CW network that is replacing both UPN and WB.

780 shows up on my channel list but when I go to it it states I dont subscribe to it. Hopefully a power cycle will solve this, if not, a phone call to Charter.

No 780 for me yet, rebooted the Moxi, still no 780. There was a segment on KVEW tonight during the 5pm news about HDTV. I caught the tail end of it where explaining you can hook up an antenna to an HD receiver etc. Anyone see the begining? I never watch the local news, just happend to be at my old man's house.

Here is the article from the Yakima paper regarding HD broadcasts
http://nl.newsbank.com/nl-search/we/...4E8&p_docnum=1

Also, I must say that the Yakima paper has a much better website than the Tricycle Herald

Has anyone noticed the Audio sync being WAY off on 782? I was at a buddys house who has an antenna and it was way off as well....

Yeah, the audio on 782 is weird. I have noticed that if the audio is 5.1, it will play no problem. It seems like the problem occurs when the audio is just plain old 2.0, then there is like a four minute delay. I plan on emailing KNDU about it tomorrow. Also the PQ seems a lot better than when it first started on Charter. Watched the State of the Union tonight and it looked very good. Also, my HDNet and HDNet Movies is switched around on Charter, anyone else have that problem? 770 is supposed to be HDNet but it shows as Movies and 771 shows HDNet instead of Movies. Also, my G4tech tv guide info is always wrong as is my channel 107 Nicktoons.
