Don't know if you consider Pittsburgh the same region but it has two VHF stations, WQED on 13 and WPCW (virtual 19.1) on 11.

Whoops, I guess I forgot to answer the actual question. .Sammer's explanation is an excellent one. .Unfortunately, it appears that the FCC cares more about telecom companies than broadcasters, so I wouldn't hold my breath for a decent power boost on VHF anytime soon. .These companies are still crabbing because they still don't have enough spectrum (I guess almost 200Mhz was not enough). .If the FCC has their way, broadcasters will be pushed into low VHF one day.

Per a brief article on WTOV's website, they have enhanced their transmitting facility. They mention higher power and a new vertically polarized antenna. It's unclear as to whether they've upped their transmitter power as well as added the new antenna. Reception here in the Canton area seems the same...maybe even down a little from the usual but that might just be due to current conditions.

I remember seeing Channel 7 billboards everywhere when traveling through the Wheeling area back in the early 90s. There was a huge Elby's Big Boy right at a major highway intersection and we always stopped there, as well as the one up on a hill in nearby St. Clairesville, Ohio. But I remember Channel 7 as a major station in that region.

Do you mean to tell me they're trying to do THREE HD feeds?

Yes, they are running all in HD
CBS is 1080. FOX and ABC are 720 feeds. Kinda neat. Picture looks good on all feeds too.

Checking WTRF's OTA signal this afternoon, I noted they seem to be doing pretty well putting out three HD channels simultaneously. There are, however, occasional video glitches (and quicker, less noticeable audio ones) that probably indicate they are living on the edge so far as compression is concerned. All three sub-channels are probably just a little "softer" than I like on a larger screen but probably not as noticeable on smaller displays. I'm wondering how all of this holds up when two or more channels carry high action programming? What I watched today was all minimal action shows like "Judge Judy" etc.

I didn't think you could have 3 HD channels.

In times past, it usually wasn't done because three HD channels couldn't be squeezed into the available bandwidth and still have usable video. I don't know much about it but apparently newer compression techniques and encoders are now allowing it to happen. (Directv has recently been able to put more HD channels per transponder and not suffer noticeable video degradation. However, I think this level of efficiency is more readily realized in satellite technology than present OTA broadcasting.) The channel 7 video is probably acceptable to most people with smaller screens but a larger screen reveals the lack of sharpness and definition that would be there if the higher compression wasn't being used. I personally have never been a big fan of sub-channels due to this. I am wondering also how stable this three HD channels arrangement actually is and how it will perform when a lot of high action programming is occurring simultaneously.

As Howard Hughes said (or at least purportedly in Scorsese's "Aviator"), this may be “The wave of the future. Wave of the future. The wave of ..." smile.gif

With reallocation and crunching of the spectrum such cramming of additional streams into the 6 MHz spectrum may be what's around the corner and perhaps inevitable. At least it might mollify Julius Genachowski's (he of the FCC) concern about what he labels "empty boxcars".

Not far from my location, KXII has been doing statmuxing with CBS on 12-1 at 1080i, MyN on 12-2 at 480i and Fox on 12-3 at 720p. Being a big football fan, I watch KXII a lot in the fall since their feeds are occasionally different than the local D/FW stations. Even with the high motion of football simultaneous on 12-1 and 12-3, it looks very good. Like Wheeling-Steubenville, Sherman-Denison is essentially a two station market, spanning two states. Those two stations hereabouts provide the Big 4 networks and the 2 netlets of MyN and CW.

Drifting a bit from the core topic. I've often wondered why WTOV and WTRF never settled on a common site (a la Parma) to provide service to both cities when DTV was in the planning stages. Given the terrain challenges of the Ohio Valley, a single site would have at least made aiming less of a chore. I'd guess that Windsor Heights would have provided service to both cities. But I'm sure the economic realities were such that using the longtime, existing structures played heavily into any decision. And, unless I'm mistaken, OTA just isn't very big in that area.
