I am new at HDTV but here in the Steubenville Ohio area I was wondering what local HDTV stations can people receive? I know that the local Comcast Cable does not have HDTV available ,only in the Weirton WVA. area. I only can get WTOV-HDTV-57 with a inside antenna.

Still no HDTV stations, but the CSR for Comcast said they have to rebuild the head-end still. I get OTA stations and it is great to watch the NFL and the Steelers in HDTV.Night and day different.

Curious - are either WTOV/9 or WTRF/7 passing network HD? Or are they just SD digital OTA?

(I'd assume if you're watching the Steelers in HDTV, you may be able to pick up KDKA-DT...assuming that WTRF is not passing CBS HD.)

WTOV-9 is in HD(WTOV-57HD) ,and I'm not sure about WTRF-7 because I can't receive it. I am able to get KDKA-DT-25. I only have a indoor antenna with a preamp, so that is why I only get so few HDTV channels.

P.S. Better half won't let me put up an outside antenna.

digital simulcast
I was talking to Comcast tech and he said that Comcast will going to a digital simulcast in the future. This will clear up any problems with an analog channels. I have a dual tuner 6412 and analogs channels are bad.

Thank you for contacting Comcast in regards to HDTV services and
availability.

We're very excited about the potential of HD, and while we do not have
agreements with all programmers that would allow us to carry their HD
programming, we continue to have discussions with a number of them in
the hopes of reaching an agreement to carry their signals.

HDTV is currently available in limited service areas but will soon be
available to many Comcast customers. Our records indicate the head end
where your service come from does not have enough band width to carry
the HD service.

Once the head end in your area is update, this service will be
available. Unfortunately, I do not have any information on when this
will be complete.

Thank you again for your interest in HDTV services from Comcast.

Sincerely,

Comcast Customer Care Specialist

Does anyone have an idea as to when WTRF-DT will go to full power operation? I have emailed them twice about this and no one at the station has had the courtesy to reply. I receive WTOV-DT here (Canton) with good signal strength and hope to have similar with WTRF once they up their power level. I'm formerly from that general area and enjoy watching programming from these stations. At the moment, I get a 70% signal from WTOV but 0% from WTRF. WOUC-DT, Cambridge booms in with signals around 100% most of the time! I also receive WIIC-DT, Pittsburgh often and other Pittsburgh and Johnstown/Altoona area DTV stations when skip is in from that direction.

WTRF-DT is very weak, I can not get it to lock in either. I am not sure when they will go full power. I have e-mailed them too. WTOV-DT is now broadcasting weather plus, it is great for local weather.

I guess many stations just don't care enough to be courteous to interested viewers. It seems to be really hard prying any information out of them. I did get a reply recently from WVIZ-DT (PBS) Cleveland regarding their similar low power situation...they plan to be full power by late summer to early fall this year. Right now they're at 0% like WTRF. I watch the Weather Plus from WTOV-DT 9-2 every now and then. There's a similar setup on WKYC-DT 3-2 from Cleveland. Apparently NBC is putting these Weather Plus services on many of their affiliated stations. By the way, do any of the Cleveland/Akron/Canton DT stations get down to you in the Wintersville area? ....just curious

WDLI 17-39
WEAO 49-50
WFMJ 21-20 all the time

WEWS 5-15
WJW 8-31
WQHS 61-34
WUAB 43-28
WYTV 33-36 right weather conditions

Is there any other stations on UHF that broadcasts in digital from this area?

The only other ones I can think of are:

WOAC 67 (47) another shopping channel, Canton license but actually east of Akron
WVIZ 25 (26) currently on low power from their studios, moving to main tower by fall
WNEO 45 (46) same PBS programming as WEAO 49 (50)

Channel 3 and 19's DTV are on VHF channels 2 and 10. WKYC on channel 2 has occasional interference problems here from noise and probably from KDKA in Pittsburgh...this causes momentary breakups at times. Channel 10 also seems to require precise antenna centering to avoid glitches in the signal...again probably some kind of interference. I use a Winegard fringe area antenna with a preamplifier and rotor atop a 50' tower. I don't think reception would be as good as it is without this combination. Digital reception overall is good from Cleveland, Youngstown, Steubenville and intermittent from Pittsburgh. Most often watched DT station from Pittsburgh is WIIC which has been noticed almost daily lately. A week or so ago, there was a long opening from that direction for over 24 hours and I was getting all the Pittsburgh DT stations, also some from Johnstown/State College/Altoona areas. My LG LST-4200A OTA does a super job and is better than the OTA capabilities of my Samsung Directv receiver. The LG seems to lock on to weaker signals better but even it can't get get WTRFs puny output! I can regularly receive WOUC-DT from Cambridge and fairly often WHIZ-DT in Zanesville comes through. A few times I've had Columbus and Toledo DT stations come through and also one in Mansfield. Later, when everyone is up to full power, things should be even more interesting.

Was intending to mention this but forgot...last couple of days WUAB-DT 43 (28) has a color bar test screen on channel 28.1 prior to starting a new channel called "The Tube", a rock/pop music station. That's not my kind of music but I suppose others will like it.

Don't lose a lot of sleep getting WVIZ-DT in places like Wheeling or even Canton. I'm under 20 miles from the Parma antenna farm, and I can't get them. Their current setup is VERY low power. As noted here, that'll change in the next few months...they are in the process of moving the DT signal to the North Royalton tower where their analog signal is, at full power.

WCWB-TV 22.n 42

WPCB-TV 40.n 50

WPGH-TV 53.n 43

WPXI 11.n 48

WQED 13.n 38

WTAE-TV 4.n 51

Sorry...no information as to when ch 27 in Youngstown is going DT.

Channel 23 in Akron and channel 55 in Cleveland have not started up on digital yet either. Some stations seem to be holding out as long as they can for various reasons. Ch 55 is reported to be slow in coming to digital due to interference concerns of a Canadian station on the DT channel assigned to 55. Ch 23 is owned by Pax, a company that has always been a little bizarre, in my opinion.

I was thinking of getting my dad the Humax HDTV turner and an antennae for Father's Day. I live in Columbus, however, he lives in Steubenville (Keagler Estates to be precise). Are there very many channels that can be picked up OTA in the valley? Just curious if it is the right time to purchase and if he will appreciate it. i know Comcast still doesn't offer anything via cable. Thanks in advance!

Thanks for the info. Do you have pretty strong signals (on all but the Cleveland channels that is). His TV is in the basement, I'm just wondering if an indoor antennae with the receiver will do well or not. Any suggestions? Sounds like a lot of channels, I'm guessing these are the major networks and a few others (Like Fox, UPN, etc). I hope it works out! Thanks for the info again. I appreciate it.

With an indoor antenna he will probably only get 9 Steubenville 11,2 Pittsburgh.

Anyone been hearing anything lately as to when WTRF-TV will be going full-power with their digital transmitter on channel 32? I get a good signal here in Canton OH from WTOV and am hoping for similar from WTRF when they get their power level up. I've never been able to lock in their low-power station even when others are coming in well from that direction.

I just tried to lock them in tonight with no luck too. I wish they would respond with some info when you e- mail them. How about WKBN what is there status?

They never answered my emails either.....apparently they care little about public relations.

Sorry..have heard nothing further regarding WKBN getting their digital signal on the air. I'm also waiting for WVIZ ch.26 in Cleveland to up their power...it is supposed to happen this summer or early fall...but have seen/heard nothing yet.

I've been seeing WIIC-DT, Pittsburgh almost every night lately even when other Pittsburgh stations aren't high enough level to lock. Wonder what makes WIIC come in so much more often that the others?

I E-Mailed WTRF still waiting to her from them. WPXI & KDKA from Pittsburgh are very strong signals for me.

WPXI is received here quite often with strong signals even when other Pittsburgh stations are at a level too low to lock. I'm curious if it's their power level, their antenna pattern or maybe both? I get KDKA-DT only occasionally. Channels 11 and 53 are usually the strongest on regular analog TV.

They are both at 1000 kW WPXI is stronger for me too. It comes at 99% where KDKA is at 97%

Looking back at my postings I realized I had been saying "WPXI" when I meant "WIIC-DT". I don't why I had WPXI in my head. I was referring to Ch. 11's digital station. Wasn't "WPXI" the old call letters for WIIC? A couple times this past week, I've received a station from down your way that I'd not seen before....WVTX Ch. 28 in Wheeling...reception was fair. I think it's a low-power outlet, right? I wonder how the low-power stations will manage when everyone has to go digital? We have one such station here in Canton on Ch. 52.
