This is one thing that annoys me about the stations.. They all announced on their websites that they would STREAM the rally, but made no mention of actually broadcasting it. I would've set my TiVo had I know they were going to AIR it as well. They all send out dozens of tweets and post countless stories every day on social media and on their websites. Why can't they just do like WSOC did and post a list saying this is what we're going to do and when..

They've even had two of their photographers driving a live truck across the country all week long to setup for next week. I realize it's partially a gimmick that they can follow on the air, etc but from a logical standpoint... why wouldn't you just rent a live truck in CA, or work out an arrangement with a TV station there for one?

WBTV & WSOC both had long form specials leading up to the Divisional & NFC Championship game. FOX 46 aired their own pre-game show for both of those as well, but only did a postgame show for the Divisional game (they had to air X-Files after the NFC Championship). WCCB definitely stole the show on postgame coverage of the NFC Championship game. Their wall-to-wall coverage was excellent.

"Panthers Pride" special broacasting schedule:
• Monday, Feb. 1: 7 p.m. - 7:30 p.m.
• Tuesday, Feb. 2: 8 p.m. - 8:30 p.m.
• Wednesday, Feb. 3: 7 p.m. - 7:30 p.m.
• Thursday, Feb: 4: 7 p.m. - 8 p.m.
• Friday, Feb. 5: 8 p.m. - 9 p.m.
• Sunday, Feb, 7: 12 p.m. – 1 p.m.

I will be in Santa Clara setup the remote facilities for WSOC. The answer to your question is cost. WSOC will be doing nightly specials plus coverage in each newscast. 19 hours a day the truck will be in use. No station in San Francsico is going to give you that kinda of support for 9 days. Renting for 9 days is a skyrocket cost. I have wired to truck to do three paths. We will support other COX stations covering the game, along with wsoctv.com, Twitter and Facebook WSOC is committing 9 people for 9 days to cover the Super Bowl. I will be happy to answer any technical question about our coverage or setup.

Ah. I forgot to factor in the newscast liveshots... now it makes sense. Sounds like it will be a busy week, I'm looking forward to watching it. It's turned into a rough year so far for the local media outlets covering sports. First Clemson makes it to the National Championship and it happens to be in Arizona, and now the Panthers and SB 50 are in California.

I know WSPA did something similar with the Clemson game. They had a guy leave Miami right after the Orange Bowl and drive to the National Championship. They relied on the LTE remote backpacks a good bit though, so I'm not sure if they took a real live truck or not.

I thought Cox had sister station in Bay Area that could assist with coverage for WSOC or maybe they sold that station.

Also WBTV and WYFF sending reporters and anchors for Super Bowl coverage. And I would assume WCNC and WSPA as well.

Also yesterday Luke Kukeley do weather report on WCNC.

Two years ago COX and FOX swapped. FOX got KTVU, Oakland...COX got WFXT, Boston and WHBQ, Memphis.

WSOC has a strong signal in its primary coverage area, as well as translators. And you can receive 9.1 and/or 9.5 in Spartanburg County. But the signal does not reach as far into Western NC or Upstate SC as the Dallas signals from Charlotte. And this is frustrating to some people, as well as the fact that the official ABC signal from WLOS on 13 can also be problematic. Just wish WSOC could boost the signal a bit more to the west like WBTV, but I know they are mostly concentrated on the designated Charlotte market.

WSOC is at 997' AGL; 1853' ASL

WBTV is at 1932' AGL; 2650' ASL

This gives WBTV a huge advantage that Power can not overcome. HAAT is the key for transmitting and receiving broadcast.

We are not license to reach those areas, please stop comparing my 1000' tower to WBTV's 2000. I could increase power to 1500kw (legal limit is 1000Kw) and still not cover what WBTV does. Height trumps power. Period. WSOC operates at the legal limit as stated by the FCC.

Fortunately for me here in Greenville, I receive both WSPA-7 and WBTV-3 very easily with 100% signal strength. And WSPA doesn't preempt CBS for ACC, as the games here are carried on 13-WLOS out of Asheville. Don't know how well WSPA or WFMY-2 are received OTA in Charlotte area anymore, but back in analog days it was possible. But unfortunately cable systems no longer carry regional channels from neighboring markets like they used to years ago. WSPA used to be carried on cable in Charlotte and WBTV used to be carried on cable in Spartanburg and Asheville. However that ended years ago back in the early 90's, as today it has become a big money contract dispute.
i am old enough to remember when ACC games were on WYFF and WBTV while WLOS and WSOC showed China Beach and WCNC showed Quantum Leap on Wednesdays while on Saturdays ACC hoops was on 4 and 3 while 13 showed bowling and Wide World Of Sports while 7 showed games from CBS

Not complaining just trying to explain to realoldman. I understand the technical reasons. Although I do miss WSOC and WCCB reception but I can watch the livestream newscasts.

It will be interesting to see how the spectrum repack affects local channels. Because speculation suggests WJZY RF47 and WAXN RF50 may be subject to reassignment as High UHF may be reallocated for wireless. But don't really know until something is officially decided by the FCC and the broadcast corporations. But it could be some stations may multicast and share the same frequency, or move to VHF. Remains to be seen, but I do hope current coverage and reception is maintained.

I have trouble receiving it from time to time here in NW Mecklenburg county. I attribute it mostly to the tricky nature of receiving it with a home built antenna mounted in the attic and my location. Interestingly I use this same antenna for WCCB and don't have any issues. Probably got something to do with the higher frequency of WSOC.

I intend to eventually address it by replacing it with a new antenna mounted outside on the same pole where I have already have an antenna pointed at the Dallas farm. That should take care of it for good. Just have to get the motivation to climb up there to do it.

WoW!

Davidson Wildcats game on WCCB 18.3 looks almost like 16:9 HD on their main channel.

Very nice to see a local game like this.

Thank You. Installed new firmware and tweaked stat-muxing in the encoder last week.

Well it looks like tonight is "Ground Zero" for Super Bowl Coverage. Tonight or tomorrow most of the area stations will be doing some kind of special.

Friday:
7:00pm Super Game Preview Special on WSPA
7:30pm Pounding to the Title on WCCB
8:00pm Panthers Pride on WSOC
8:00pm Panthers Championship Countdown on WBTV
8:00pm Panthers: Chasing a Championship on WYFF

Saturday:
7pm Panthers Pursuit of a Title (WHNS)
7pm Panthers Primetime on WCNC

I assume that WBTV is planning a special too, but I can't find it listed on their website or in my guide data. If I watch Charlotte news I usually watch WSOC or WCCB, so I haven't caught the airtime/date for theirs.
