Definitely a bad luck streak for them here lately. Within the past month (or maybe two) storms have knocked them off the air twice before tonight too.

I'm so close to the WCNC transmitter site I wouldn't be able to tell which transmitter is being used.

They had trouble the night of a Sunday night game on NBC, too.

I wonder if they are back to full power or some sort of reduced back up transmitter? I see they are back but their signal strength fluctuates at my location because they are side mount and I think maybe directional. Some days it is 6 bars, some days 7 or 8. WJZY is always 8 to 10 and WBTV is always 10 from the similar location. And WCNC is about 790kw anyway rather than 1000kw, although they did have a permit to top mount and increase power.

WCNC signal strength at my location is in the 70s (on a 0-100 scale).

I don't think the slightly lower power level is the issue, but rather it is their antenna pattern. FCC listings indicate a directional antenna, which is probably side mounted to the east. Possibly to protect WHNS on RF21. So there will be nulls in certain areas, and a strong signal in others. Whereas WBTV is top mounted, omnidirectional, and full power 1000kw. WJZY is also side mounted, but they are full power and more nondirectional. After the FCC repack, perhaps WCNC and WJZY will top mount their digital antennas to take full advantage of their tall towers. Or some stations may even share a signal, such as WSOC and WAXN, or WJZY/WMYT. Just speculating here; remains to be seen.

The thunderstorms are over Dallas again today I hope they don't hit WCNC again, or the other towers. But I would guess these tall towers are grounded good since they could be a giant lightning rod.

Signal report: Yesterday I went to Gaffney, SC to the outlet mall and nearest Popeyes Chicken. They still have a nice Radioshack in Gaffney, SC in the shopping center next to the big Walmart. They had a Samsung TV connected to a Clearstream 2V antenna on the front wall. No amp. It picked up WBTV, WYFF, WHNS, WGGS, WCNC, WJZY, and WMYT. WBTV was strongest at 7 to 8 bars and the rest were a bit weaker. No WSOC, WCCB, WSPA, or WLOS. Probably if antenna was outside with preamp it would have gotten everything. The manager said people still ask for the traditional Antennacraft antennas, but unfortunately they are no longer manufactured and they now sell only the Clearstreams.

The Charlotte stations still have significant viewership in Cherokee County- depending on which area you are in. The western side of the county is almost exclusively Spartanburg viewers, but the eastern and southern-most portions can pick up the Charlotte stations much better than the GSP affiliates. Where my wife's parents live they could easily pick up Charlotte or even some Columbia stations, but struggle with most of the GSP stations. WBTV is a favorite of the beauty shops in the county because of their strong OTA signal. WBTV & WSOC are carried locally on cable, but in SD only. WJZY was years ago, but dropped off due to re-transmission consent negotiations I believe. I actually remember a very lengthy fight between WLOS & the precursor to Charter back in the 1990's. WLOS finally gave in when they realized that everybody just would watch WSOC and didn't miss them at all!

Tyler you must have gotten the last of everything at the Popeyes. I enjoyed it when it first opened, but now they struggle. One day we went in and they had nothing but Tea to drink; another day they were totally out of tenders, and today the drink machine was broken AND they were out of anything spicy.

Where no man has gone before...

I see that H&I (WJZY 46.3) will be airing all five of the Star Trek TV series starting Sunday, Jul 24th, with season 1, episode 1 of each. Looks like they are going to air them in series order. My TiVo guide goes out close to two weeks and has the first 6 episodes of each of the five.

I think I will load up the TiVo's hard drive and binge, later on.

Popeyes was good when I was there. Folks had waited for years for Popeyes to challenge Bojangle's in the Upstate and Charlotte markets, as their chicken is a bit spicier. They still need locations in Greenville and Spartanburg, but Boiling Springs is next.

As for the antenna, it did seem as WBTV had the strongest signal at the Radioshack. And I would guess the ladies at the beauty shop like to watch the CBS soaps on WBTV, which may be easier to receive than WSPA. But I noticed some homes had antennas pointed towards Charlotte, and others had them directed towards GSP. But regarding ABC, is it easier to receive WSOC on 9.1 or 9.5, or WLOS on 13?

Google Fiber

I have seen the commercial for the Google Fiber starting in Charlotte. Are they offering TV service, and is the video quality an improvement over cable and satellite, or about the same?

Fox 46 reduced signal?

For some reason, 46 is now spotty and used to come in good. I seem to loose 64 occasionally too. Could be due to heavy rain for the last few weeks or some trees may have gone down, causing more multi-path issues.

Friend lives in area where they asked if ok to run a line to his house...they are asking all in his neighborhood to do this. $50 for 100/100M, 70 for 1GB and 130 for 1GB + TV. He said ok, but hasn't decided on getting it yet.

And, undoubtedly, WBTV will respond by broadcasting that other options are available to viewers, such as free TV with an antenna. I've seen this back and forth, carriage-fee trash talking so many times. Yawn...

But, maybe OTA will gain a handful of cord-cutter viewers.

I noticed over the weekend that WCCB 18.3 MeTV is now 480i 16:9. I think that is new; at least, I don't recall anyone mentioning it. Old shows in 4:3 format are now stretched somewhat. They don't quite fill the screen, but they are much wider than standard 4:3. 16:9 commercials do fill the full 16:9 screen.

I wonder how long it will be until all SD sub-channels adopt a common aspect ratio (hopefully, 16:9).

MeTV programming on 18.3 is pillarboxed 3:2, so the programming is slightly stretched.

MeTV on WCCB 18.3 always had black bars on the edges before, but WSPA 7.2 had MeTV zoomed in to fill the whole screen. Now with the widescreen change, WCCB and WSPA aspect is the same. Still a bit of black bars on some shows, but not as much as before.

Now I would like WBTV to change aspect on Bounce and Grit to 16x9 like Raycom sister station WIS in Columbia. Got 10 the other day in the morning and notice the 16x9 look better. And I think the morning news on 3.2 would definitely look better, even though SD.

So if you have cut the cord, and don't want to bother with an antenna, you can watch WSOC news if you have a Roku via NewsOn.

Or you can watch the live stream on their website, wsoctv.com. But is the Roku version live and HD? I can often view their 11pm news, but I usually lose WSOC during the afternoon with the attic antenna. So for the early news I usually watch WBTV or WYFF. Sometimes WCNC or WSPA. But I will say WJZY has improved their newscasts in recent months, and looks more like the FOX O&O stations.

Speaking of WJZY, apparently they are building a new set as their studio is now under construction. The current set was built mainly for the morning show with a diner theme, but it was later adjusted for the evening news as well. But Brien Blakely said the whole studio is being rebuilt with a new set for the evening news and a separate set for the morning show. Temporarily they are back in the newsroom.

Looks like they basically got rid of the 50's diner part and replace it with a new glass & led desk, and put in a new sitting area.

Seems to be problem with WSOC 9.5 translator. No audio or video last night but signal meter had 4 and 5 bars due to good weather conditions at my location. Main 9.1 was fine and 10 bars last night.
