One other thing, is there a way to purchase a third party box or receiver that would do the same thing or are you stuck renting from cable company?

Only the local channels are provided in HD in the clear - the 200-series channels that you see already.
To get cable channels like TNT or USA or Bravo etc in HD, you need a cable box.
Or a cable-card enabled TV or box.
I think for your purposes, just going with WOW's cable box will probably be the easiest option.
