Sounds great! As a viewer outside the Chicago area, I look forward to the day when WGN's satellite and cable signal will also look that good. This is a great announcement for Chicago area viewers!

It’s a Chicago first! WGN-TV will broadcast the Cubs vs. Colorado Rockies on August 7 at 7 pm (CT) in high definition television (HDTV) on its WGN-DT signal, Channel 19.

This will be the first live locally originated HDTV broadcast in Chicago.

WGN will be using two crews, combining Trio Video’s digital truck X2 and HD Net’s HDTV truck. While Cubs commentators Chip Caray and Joe Carter will cover the game on both signals, many other aspects of the HDTV game will be different, from the shots chosen, to the replays shown.

Old News! We've known this for over a week!

The search function... it's a wonderful thing!

Here one of the already posted threads on the subject:

Frank,

Be nice. I'm pretty sure she's a publicist for WGN. I think she's just trying to make sure we know about upcoming HDTV programming on WGN. Heck, we need more networks to make announcements like this; we'd have more to watch!

Frank, be easy on Amy, she is a newbie. For the record, the post you refer to is dated 7/27/01. In my calculation, that is only 4 days ago. A week is still 7 days !! My wife uses the same time of "math" when explaining how long it takes me to do something. It's funny how the math "reverses" when the shoe is on the other foot.

We need as much excitement from new users as possible to forward the HDTV cause for us all. Heck, I haven't used the search function either!!!

This is a great forum to talk about all our AV wants, needs, and desires. Easy on the newbies. I myself am new to this forum as a poster, but have known about it for over a year.

I, too, would like to thank Amy for this post. It's great to see folks from the local stations participate in these discussions.

Amy, if you read this, please let your coworkers know that there are many folks in the Chicago area who would think they were in heaven if Cubs and Sox home games were on WGN-DT. (And possibly WCIU-DT when it's on the air.)

WPIX in New York provides a number of Mets games in HD from Shea Stadium; they are also owned by the Tribune Company. It would be a true delight to see Chicago receive the same treatment as the big city in the east.

Thanks again for posting and I hope to hear more from you at avsforum!

Thanks Dan.

Yes, you are correct, another Tribune-owned station, WPIX in New York also broadcasts Mets games on HDTV.

I actually found out about this forum from a coworker at that station. We are doing are best to inform our viewers about our programming in HDTV and to educate them on the advantages of this technology and provide them opportunities to connect with other viewers interested in this topic. (Hence the link I added to this site from www.wgntv.com)

I do appreciate all the feedback and while this message board caters to those who already use or know about HDTV, it is my job to help those viewers who aren't familiar with this product find out more about it.

While the HDTV Cubs broadcast may be "old news" to some, it's an exciting event for us here at WGN-TV in Chicago.
thanks again,

Amy

Amy,
The "Old News" comment is out of frustration for the huge increase in people posting information that has been covered quite extensively already. In the future I would do a search for any info you may have and if it has already been covered, to jump in that particular thread and add your information there. This forum always welcomes people from all aspects of the HD & Home Theater world!

Also does the HD department have a more direct eMail address (or can your System Administrator create one) so we can all send comments about the HD material WGN is doing for this game and future events? You know how is it when you send comments to the generic feedback eMails address, they tend to not get to the people they should be getting to.

By the way I noticed that on the page that has the press release for this game there are links on the right side explaining HD and some other links including one labeled "HDTV message board" which is a link to this forum! I'm sure the administrator at AVSforum is pleased with this! I'm glad to see WGN is smart enough to provide a link to the most informed forum on the NET and not some forum where people possibly interested in HD would get incorrect information!

One more thing...is WGN intending to do any other HD material in the near future? I was curious if this game is a onetime deal or will WGN start doing other HD content now.

Frank,

You can email WGN-TV at http://www.wgntv.com/about/station/contact.html

Yes, it is an email form system that I set up, not direct email addresses. However, it will be forwarded onto the appropriate person. Or you can email me at webmaster@wgntv.com.

Thanks for checking out our HDTV section on www.wgntv.com When I was putting it together, I thought it was very important that it contained links about HDTV and give viewers a forum to discuss it as well.

At this time, I'm not aware of any more scheduled HDTV Cubs games. However, it is my understanding that this is not a one-time only event. When I find out more information, I will be sure to let everyone here know.

thanks,

Amy

It will be great if WGN becomes a leader in independent HD programming and makes it available to both DBS services. Along with CBS and the other two new HD sports networks, WGN could really help launch HD to the masses.

I watched a bit of it and it looked fabulous. Everyone would demand HDTV if they could see stuff like this on a regular basis.

Not only was this a great HDTV broadcast, but the game was very exciting too. I think its great WGN did this. I got to this thread from the link to avsforum on the WGN HDTV web page. What a great idea. Suggest you go to http://www.avsforum.com/ubb/Forum20/HTML/003995.html to see all the raves about the game. Looking foward to watching more HDTV broadcasts from WGN.
