True HD can be done with the present sat technology and basically is being done by DISH and DirecTV. The problem with satellites is that they have limited bandwidth (capacity) and HD channels take up a lot more bandwidth than standard defination (SD) channels!

Even the current SD channels being sent out by both DSS providers are being compressed far too much...thus they don't look too good on most RPTVs (becuase those sets enlarged all the imperfections that the smaller sites are hiding).

Until many, many more people own HDTVs (and buy the sat HD rec'rs) then neither DISH or DirecTV is going to offer a lot of HD programming because they would have to either: A) take away several current SD channels to make room for each HD channel, or B) launch a new satellite (which is very costly) -- neither option is likely to help profits for them (so they have no incentive). Right now, the sat HD channels still look pretty good but in the future they could easily start over-compressing them (to make room for more channels) and thus make them lower quality than OTA HD!

So right now you say its a wash between HD - Satellite and HD - OTA...resolution-wise?

And under that premise...Dish Network is the way to go...because of more content.

Generally, OTA DTV has better visual quality then DSS.

OTA stations have a full 20Mb/s data channel to play with, which they can use any way they want.... Alas, most of it goes unfullfilled since upconverted NTSC needs only ~4Mb/s.

DSS has a much larger data channel (150Mb/s?), but in order to shoehorn 100+ channels into it they have turn up the compression until they all look like crap.

Can some members help me understand the difference between a HDTV picture from an OTA source as compared to a DSS source? True HD resolution can not be had over the present satellite technology? True or False?

Will Dish Network transmitting CBS -HDTV over the satellite light a fire under DirecTV HD offerings...or for the foreseeable future...is HD more expansive OTA...than what will be available over satellite? I believe Dish Network presently has the most satellite HD programming (HD-HBO, HD Showtime, HD- CBS, and HD pay per view...as compared to HD-HBO and HD pay per view).

I would greatly appreciate any help in bettering my understanding.

Thanks,
Michael
