Good thing I spent most the day inside hah. Have you tried pulling anything OTA? I got a bigger indoor antenna and now I get 3 crystal clear analog channels. Still have yet to get on the roof of the building.

Well, Time Warner has finally added two new HD channels: ESPN2 and Golf Versus.

I hope that this relates to the implementation of switched-digital video, and that we'll soon be seeing lots of other HD channels appearing on our screens.

Some time ago, there was a post that said our local CBS had applied for Ch. 27, for digital ota broadcasts. Anyone know the current status of that?

Oh wow, I didn't know Palm Springs had a thread here! And right when I have a question.

I live in the Indio area and I'm looking for a quality antenna. I have some old antenna that only gets 65>* signal most of the time but I really want to enjoy OTA HDTV. I read about the 15-2187 from RadioShack that was posted here and it practically receives great reviews so would you guys recommend it?

Oh and does FOX (33-2) look odd like black bars on the side like it if was in SD and poor picture quality or is it just my old antenna?

I live in the Sun City off Washington St. Don't know if Indio is too far away; but I do just fine with a Silver Sensor indoor ant. Might be worth a try?

Anyone got any info on directv offering locals in the CV? I recently had it installed and was about to put up an off-air antenna when the installer mentioned Directv is to be geeting locals channels starting Jan 16 2008.

Due to my job at Kwajalein Atoll in the Marshell islands, I Get home to the valley once a year. This year I bought a Emerson TV (Wall mart special) for my Grand neice and her great grandma. Using a Amplified Rabbit ears (Variable Amplification control 1-5) and the distance from antenna web.org the Following stations were picked up (Amplifier at full power 5) was KVMD (150KW from 29 Palms-@ 55.9 Miles) Digital subchannels (KXLA and KJLA 31.1, 31.2, 31.3) (Channel 23). From Palm Springs KESQ (50KW channel 52 @ 31.7 miles) and Sub Channels KCWQ (2-3) KDFX (33.2) KESQ WX. Signal Strenghth levels were not available. But turning the antenna affected the picture quality of the Analog signals but the Digital did not appear affected by this. However when the amplifier control was lowered down to about 3 from 5 The pictures on the digital channels froze and dropped opf to no signal status. At my place several hundred feet away Trying a LG DVD (737 I believe as my notes are missing) recorder with an ATSC Tuner hooked to a Channel Master 4228 antenna with a low power distribution amp. I Received KESQ and Sub channels (Same distance for all stations as above) KMIR (12 KW @ 31.6 miles Channel 46) and the 29 Palms KVMD, KXLA, KJLA stations. I Will be back proably next year for or after the transition occurs and will be curious as more of the stations switch over until then I'll keep checking the sites as I have time

My HD3250 box stopped working on Thursday morning (3/13/2008) after TWC ran a major update on their software/firmware. After a week of pulling my hair out, this is what I finally got from them:

At this present time, Time Warner Cable does not provide support for the USB, SATA, Firewire, HDMI, or DVI ports. Some of the ports on the digital boxes are active and can be used. Time Warner Cable can not help with the setup or installation of the following ports USB, SATA, Firewire, HDMI, or DVI ports; currently Time Warner Cable only support the setup and installation of composite, component, S-Video, and coax cable. If you have any questions feel free to contact your local Time Warner Office between hours of 8am to 8pm Monday through Saturday for Sales and Billing and Technical Support is open 24 hours a day / 7 days a week.

Thank you for contacting Time Warner Cable.

This thread has been quiet, for over a year. Last I heard, Palm Springs channel 2 had applied for an OTA digital channel (27?). Anyone know the status of that; or when they might start OTA broadcasts?

I don't think KPSP is any rush, until FEB 2009. Most viewers get Time Warner out here. The Palm Springs area has one of the highest percentage of cable viewers in the country. So they're probably just fine with their Time Warner HD channel for now.

Plus they're an "LP" (low powered tv station) like KDFX and KCWQ. The FCC didn't provide a Digital channel assingment back in the 90's for low powered stations. The difference here is that KESQ operates KDFX and KCWQ, so they placed those digital channels within their full powered KESQ digital signal.

KPSP is a "stand-alone", with no full powered option like KESQ or KMIR. So they either get their channel 27, which is unlikely, or wait until FEB 2009.

KESQ is now doing their news in 16:9 with some HD.

It may not be full HD yet, but it's a start, and better than a 4:3

" KESQ is now doing their news in 16:9 with some HD. "

Let's hope that might prompt the other stations to upgrade their local broadcasts.

They all, except the CW, pass through the network HD programing; but none do any syndicated showsin HD.

It does look pretty good. I noticed a lot of the locally shot news footage is in HD as well.

The newscaster's makeup looks a little off though. They kinda look like corpses. Maybe they need to tweak their makeup technique for HD.

To answer a question about KCAL:

KCAL is in the Los Angeles local TV market and Palm Springs is it's own local TV market.

So KCAL and Time Warner have to reach an agreement to carry HD, which most likely won't happen. KCAL doesn't get ratings or ad money from the Desert Cities because it's out of market. SO KCAL won't spend the money to push HD in the desert, that would be wasting $$.

However, I'm thinking if Time Warner wants to compete with Dish or DirectTV, they may work out a deal for HD. With the seperate television markets, sat tv providers can only show local stations within each market. So no KCAL at all on Dish or DirectTV in Palm Springs.

Wow, just found this thread.

I'll throw my hat in there as a Palm Springs resident. We just moved out to North Indio from Orange County, so we're new. We have Verizon FIOS tv and the HD package is crap. I'll probably be going with OTA in the near future.

We live in Terra Lago and have FIOS tv included in our HOA along with FIOS internet. The HD package is crap mostly because of channel choice, but I'm also not impressed with picture quality. I've heard that it varies from area to area, though.

I do have a relative in Bermuda Dunes who recently had Verizon run fiber to his house for internet/tv and he's very happy with the quality.

Thanks for the reply. We recently had an offer from TW via our HOA, pretty good deal, app 75% here signed up for 5 years. The TW PQ, even for SD is awfull, lots of pixellation. HD is better but it takes 8 sec or so to change channels. So I am getting basic service and pay app $20 more than my neighbors while waiting for FIOS TV. Very happy with FIOS internet.

Bob Barlow named top executive of Time Warner Cable's desert cities division

Staff
The Desert Sun

Bob Barlow, a former top executive of Time Warner Cable's desert cities division in California, has been named president of the company's San Diego division.

A 28-year cable industry veteran, Barlow will be responsible for broadband operations in the San Diego area, plus the Desert Cities division that includes the Coachella Valley, Banning and Yucca Valley areas. Just before his appointment to the San Diego post, Barlow had been president of the South Carolina division of Time Warner.

While in the desert, he led the integration of the Palm Springs and MediaOne Palm Desert cable systems into one operating unit. Barlow also worked on the merger of two separate cable companies into one unit as vice president and general manager of the Pinellas County, Fla., region.

Just installed AM 21 off the air tuner to Directv HD DVR 21
Works fine but only able to receive 4 stations
ABC over 15.1, NBC over 36.1. Prior to updating to new HD DVT, was able to receive Fox, but not now, 33.2 shows weather only.
Any suggestions. thanks

For an interesting read on the over the air transition on the Palm Springs stations go to KESQ.com and check out the Bob's Blog portion on their web site. He explains that a lot of it depends on coordination with Mexico and what a challenge that it can be. An interesting note is that KVMD 29 palms wants to move to channel 50 and boost their power to 500 KW. I dont think that did their reshearch well or they would have noticed that MY 13 KPSE is on that channel and have applied quite some time ago for a Flashcut and power boost to 13 KW on that same channel. Will be interesting to see. Also KESQ will boost to 100 KW and KMIR is doing a 10 fold power increase to 120 KW. I hope that doesn't cause any over load issues on my Channel Master 4228 about 39 Miles away afert Feb 17th Now back to my grainy AFN low def TV pictures at Kwajalien
