I've moved to Desert Hot Springs and set up an OTA tuner (Tivo HD) and OTA antenna. So far, I've only been able to get NBC HD, ABC HD and Fox. What's the word on CBS? Any other HD channels in the works?

Thanks,
Scott

It maybe a long time before we see KPSP or KDFX give us CBS and FOX in HD. Both of these stations are still transmitting low poer analog signals on 38 and 33 respectively. KPSP has an application into the FCC to flash cut to digital on 38. However, it needs clearance from the applicabble governing body in Mexico so it maybe months before we ever see this happen. I have no idea if KDFX has even submitted an application. The SD FOX signal that you are seeing is merely a digital sub channel from KESQ so they have no bandwidth to send along HD.

I live in the county just south of DHS. No cable here (but it is across the street). I have DishNetwork and got them to file a waiver to get the LA CBS HD feed. Used the justification that I would maintain local KPSP but needed a CBS HD feed. Bee receiving KCBS for 6 months now. Trying the same thing to get Fox and CW in HD.

rprenove: I can confirm that so far the Mexican government has blocked efforts to get a digital companion channel for KDFX. They are broadcasting Fox in SD on channel 33.2 as a virtual sub-channel of KESQ-TV and you will get shows in wide screen when Fox broadcasts programming in that format, but not in 720p HD.

--------------------------------------------------

lalawyer: I am east of Desert Hot Springs just north of Dillon and get CBS-2, NBC-4, KTLA-5, KABC-7, KCOP-13, KVCR-24, KOCE-50 and KDOC-56 using a DB-8 UHF and C-5 VHF antenna with a CM7777 preamp. Depending on the weather any of these can drop out.

I have been unable to get KCAL-9, KTTV-11 or KCET-28.

I'd appreciate details on your location and antenna setup so I can try to get FOX-11 as well

Jhb-- Your set up is interesting. Are both antennas on your roof? How do you merge the signals from both antennas into your television?

I also sent you a PM on my set up. It's pretty simple. Just a Clearstream C2 in the attic pointed slightly south east.

Thanks for the info.

Actually both my antennas are mounted on my fence with a clear los across a golf course. The CM7777 preamp has connections to join the UHF and VHF antennas and feed the amplified signal down the coax.

I think it is a bit of a freak that I get this to work so well at 95 miles. The lateral location on the fence is the only one that worked and the direction had to be bang on Mt. Wilson. As others have noted a shift of 6 inches either way can kill the uhf signal and I found that to be true.

The reward of course is PGA Golf on KCBS-2 and the many outstanding PBS-HD specials on 50 and soon on 24 when they complete their HD installation.

Now if only I could get FOX-HD on 11 to watch the NFL and KCAL-HD on 9 to watch the Lakers, life would be perfect.

I now realize that your reference to FOX was to the local Palm Springs FOX-SD channel and not to the LA FOX-HD on 11 that I am trying to get.

It would appear that the Mexican Government has killed plans to add CBS and FOX HD channels locally, and Riverside PBS 24 will continue to broadcast their Desert Cities feed on NTSC-18.

There have been questions, discussions in the past on this forum as to whether Time Warner cable passes along unencrypted "clear QAM" HD channels for the following network affiliates: KPSP, KESQ, KMIR, and KDFX. I can say unequivocally that they do. If your set (or HD tuner card, in the case of a PC) has a QAM tuner...and all do now, you can get all of these if you have Time Warner Desert Cities cable. You should put your set through a channel scan if you have not done so for awhile.

Wow, what a great NewYears gift!

I went to my set-up with deep fringe over-the-air antenna's in order to get CBS, FOX and PBS HD programming from LA in addition to the local ABC and NBC HD broadcasts from Palm Springs.

While I also have access to TWC thru my HOA cable, I was not prepared to pay the monthly upgrade for HD Programming.

Unfortunately, after the final digital conversion, I can no longer get KTTV-FOX-11 and I am getting drop outs on KCBS.

Now after completing my digital scan on the TWC feed, I have found these unscrambled Palm Springs digital stations on my SONY as follows:

7.2 hd CBS 2/na
7.5 hd NBC 6/36.1
100.3 hd ABC 3/42.1
100.6 sd ABC-WX na/42.2
100.11 hd FOX 11/33.2
116.10 hd WGN-HD

Thanks Again

JHB50, I am here for the winter in an RV park on Dillon and unfortunately do not have access to cable. I am interested in getting CBS in Hd. I get ABC and NBC with my RV antennae. What part of your equipment would I need to get the LA CBS? Or would I need everything that you mentioned? I think from the roof of my RV I would have a clear enough sight line.

Ron, you are looking at under a $100 investment in a DB-8 deep fringe UHF antenna/mast/cables. Since you would mount this close to the TV on your RV, you should not need an amp. The problem is to find a hotspot which will deliver the signals. I only found one spot at my place and 6 inches away I get nothing so it is a pure trial and error game. Even with this CBS-LA is problematic. Some days it is fine. Since last Friday I have not been able to get it.

Thanks for the info, JHB. From your comments it would seem that there is a real possibility that I would not be able to get anything and be even more unlikely to get a reliable signal. I think that it is not worth the time, effort and money to try this. Having located Mt Baker on the map, I can see why it is a very iffy proposition.

It seems strange to me that you can get some of the weaker stations but are unable to get KTTV. From the information that I have found it is the strongest at 166,000 watts compared with NBC at 44,700. Perhaps it has a different hot spot than the others.

Again, thanks.

In the world of Digital TV, signals can act very different from the old days. Desert Hot Springs is able to get some LA channels through the Pass, due to signal bounce and weather. Clear and colder weather will allow some digital signals to travel further. BUT, warmer/stormy, forget it.

Even if one channel broadcasts on lower power... with digital, most of the time watts don't matter, its the channel assignment, weather and direction of your antenna.

If I were in DHS, I would play around with my antenna's to see what I can get, but I wouldn't invest any large sums of money in pre-amps, or antennas. There are too many factors to keep out a regular signal from LA.

your waiver will most likely be denied because HD is seen as bonus by the FCC, all they care about is a digital signal, NOT HD, KESQ is providing a digital SD signal and that's good enough for government work. You live in an area that can get a grade 'b' digital signal, so no dice on your waiver.

On 3/15, KPSP was granted a construction permit for their digital tramsmitter as indicated in the following FCC document:
http://licensing.fcc.gov/prod/cdbs/p...es/1298371.pdf

Hopefully, KPSP will be up and running prior to the 2010 NFL season. It still appears that it will be a real long time before KDFX has a 720P OTA signal.

Do any of you over-the-air Palm Springs viewers ever recive a signal from the Las Vegas stations?

No, Vegas is too far away. Plus all of the mountains in the high desert, block any chance at a stable signal

I was thinking more of occasional sporadic reception, such as the summer skip season.

KTTV/11 & KCOP/13 are now operating with their new antennas at 115 & 120kW, respectively. I would be interested in seeing if this makes them receivable again anywhere in the Coachella Valley. It doesn't seem all that likely, but maybe at least some indications of a signal can be found.

How many local digital signals are available at the moment? Last I was there (in the fall) there were still only 2 locals (KMIR & KESQ) + KVMD.

KVES-LD just covered their application, so I suspect that station is on the air at least.

KVES-LD switched to digital on Channel 36 on 6-30-2010. according to 100,000 watts .com

According to the KPSP-CBS web site . www.kpsplocal2.com They will stop analog broadcastion on the 31 Jul 10. on 1 Aug their signal will only be available onTime warner cable. During thast time they are switching to their new transmitter and begin brocasting digital HD service to the Coachella valley on 2 Aug. 2010. I suspect it will be 1080i which I believe CBS uses. no word about any sub Channels but CBS will be in HD for the Palms Springs/ Coachella valley at that time

I have a digital tuner card in my PC that tunes the QAM channels passed along by Time Warner cable. Today I noticed that the HD channel for KPSP is no longer available. When I did a new channel scan, that channel shows as "encrypted". They are bound by FCC regulation to pass it through unencrypted if it is available OTA. I plan on calling TWC but will probably not get to the right person.

I talked to my Bro in the Mecca area (TV Fool lists my area as 31.8 miles away from EDOM hill). He's using a (Proably 20 or more years old) a 4 bay UHF proably Radio shack not sure. It's laying on the ground if I under stood him correctly with the cable running in thru a window. He told me it comes in really well and in High Def. Not sure if XHMEE Channel 38 from Mexicale 1.7 MW will jam it up like it would the analog signal. He was not able to tell me that one. I will know more when I get back in late January.

For those of you in Desert Cities Time Warner area, TW activated online DVR management. You can review/manage upcoming recordings and also search/browse the TV guide to record new shows, all within your web browser.

Go to http://dvr.timewarnercable.com for the desktop browser version, or http://mdvr.timewarnercable.com for the mobile version. The mobile version seems to work fine on my iPhone.

I just rescanned all available OTA channels with my TiVo Hd and, to my surprise, I now have CBS. I'm thrilled to now have the three major networks for free. Finally!
