I've gotten conflicting information from Direct Tv and have a question.

I live in between a couple of buildings and get satellite without any problems (via E*) but can't get anything OTA. This means the only local I get is CBS which comes directly from the SAT.

Does Directv offer locals in HD via the Sat?

If so which ones. I live in Los Angeles if that matters.

Thanks

You should be able to get the Los Angeles local feeds of CBS, ABC, Fox and NBC in HD from DirecTV.
Go to the DirecTV website and enter your zip code.
That should giove you a decent indication of what is available.

Hello there you are in luck. DTV offers the LA locals in hd via sat. Currently DTV only offers the hd locals in the NYC and LA markets, but b/c you leave in the LA market you will be able to receive them. As far as ordering the hd locals, go to DTV's website and more info should be there in terms how much the cost is.

I just spoke with D*, as I am thinking of switching from E* and asked them about the LA HD networks. They said the big 4 were available to me (as I live in LA) and that they wouldn't cost me any extra on top of the basic programming. My only dilema is giving up TNT-HD and CBS-HD out of NY....but it would be nice to kick the cost of both Comcast and E* out the door...

BTW, any of you D* subs, how is the PQ these days? Of course D* says they have the best PQ, but I would like to see what you all have to say. Let me know. Thanks.

I'm on D*.---3 days ago they shut off the HD locals. You know the ones in the 80's. I am also in the LA area.-- Today I called in. I had my $103 package cut down to 38 a month. I may suffer but I just had to let my spending talk to them. (Not that they care)--Been with them for 9 years--never got nothing free/ never asked----ever.

If you're in Chatsworth, why would D* shut off the LA locals?

I live in Sunland. Mine were cut off too. Does anyone have an explanation for this. I think D* thinks any "outlying" areas of L.A. aren't in the local market anymore. Does the fact you can receive local programming from Mt. Wilson OTA mean anything to them?

Unless you're in an overlapping territory that is served additionally by another DMA - it shouldn't matter what the OTA reception of LA channels is like.

DeanS - I'm in Sunland, too. Mine weren't cut off - at least, they aren't cut off now (almost 9 PM 4/2/2005 - about 14 hours after your post). Did yours get turned back on again?

No, I didn't get them turned back on. I think my issue is I never subscribed to local channels (I'm "grandfathered" under the old D* Limited package). When I upgrade to Total Choice with locals, they will resume, I assume.

Anyone know if dish network is planning on providing HD in Orange County in the near future? I just moved and am getting an HDTV soon, but have no idea what I need to do to get everything HD working.

One Sub to rumble them all. One Sub to shake them. One Sub to humble them all, and in the darkness break them.

This thread is not very helpful yet, but I will note that if you live in Los Angeles DMA (most of Southern California) you can get from DirecTV (D*), CBS, ABC, NBC, and FOX HD because these are all O&O stations. D* has announced Los Angeles is one of the first markets to get new local HD channels this fall (November), it will require a receiver that can handle MPEG4 feeds it appears, but there is no indication that they would drop the currrent MPEG2 HD feeds.

E* only offered CBSHD currently with no known plans to offer more. They also appear to perhaps be waiting to use MPEG4 sometime in the future. I am using OTA to get the rest of the channels over 30 miles away.

I have Dish and I have a 61.5 dish to get the Voom channels. Since I get all my local HD channels OTA I like the fact that the 61.5 dish has New York City CBS running 3 hours earlier than L.A. Total with Dish HD pak, Voom from Dish, and OTA I have 30 HD channels available. Pretty good in my opinion. Some of the 30 HD channels like Voom and HDNet run HD 24/7 others like KCAL 9 have one HD show a week. Still pretty good.

I get all of my local channels in HD, in fact, I get locals from channels 2 to 61, then the same local channels but HD from 80 to 89, then the same SD locals up in the 380 - 400's. So I get 3 sets of local channels from Direct TV, but no WB? The channels I get in HD are Fox, ABC, NBC, & CBS. Where is WB? I thought i'd be able to watch Smallville in HD but apparantly not. How do you get WB in HD? Thanks!

From D* you wont. From cable? From OTA? The last 2 are the only ways.

DirecTV is coming on Tuesday to install my new HD TiVo system and satellite. I live in Los Angeles so the big four locals come thru the dish. They offered to install an ugly OTA antenna on my roof to get WB & UPN for an additional $50. I never watch those two channels. But I thinking what if they start showing some decent shows in the future? My question is, should I put up the antenna for something I never watch or should I wait just sit tight without it until the MPEG4 stuff comes out and it's all included? My thinking is that I'll have the MPEG4 equipment well before the WB & UPN start broadcasting anything worth seeing. Thoughts?

For $50 get the antenna. UPN currently does not do HD. However WB 5 does. I like Smallville and of course the Rose Parade in HD. THere are also two PBS stations that broadcast HD in L.A. Channel 9 ocassionally has IMAX shows broadcast in HD.

The D* installer told me I wouldn't get the OTA reception (I live in the Hollywood Hills) and urged me not to put up the antenna because I would be disappointed and once it's up he wouldn't take it down again and then there would be a big hassel dealing with D*. I was initially disappointed with his assessment because I figured if I didn't like the HD Programming package I could always cancel and still get the locals in HD, but after watching Discovery Channel's "Sunrise" show and Alien Vs. Predator in HD I'm never getting rid of this thing! At least the Big Four (NBC, CBS, ABC and Fox) come thru the dish. I can't say enough how much I love my HD!!!

Has anyone heard from DirecTV yet about when they are going to start switching out dishes and receivers for the LA area for the MPEG-4 conversion? I thought they were rolling out LA and New York in December.

Has anyone in the L.A. area (or elsewhere) gotten the Dish Network 211 MPEG2/MPEG4 HD receiver and the Dish 1000? They are supposed to be putting the L.A. HD locals on starting February 1st or sooner. Has anyone received these L.A. local HD channels via Dish Network?

I will answer my own question. I recently got the Dish Network 622 MPEG4 HD DVR. I have had zero problems and I love it. They installed it with the Dish 1000 dish and it receives the 129 satellite. I now get the local networks in HD via satellite. Since my OTA was fine except for KABC and KCBS which I received about 95% of the time. Now I get those in HD via satellite and I get all HD stations 100%.

Anyone out there noticed a waxie look to thier local channels, I just got my VIP 211 this weekend, along with a Dish 1000. I'm pretty disapointed. I tried to call customer service last night, but after being on hold for twenty minutes, the gal that took my call disconnected me when she transfered me to the HD dept.

Anyone know the quick scoop on D* mpeg4, new HD stations and/or new HD-DVR availability in the L.A. area? I only recently discovered ch 95 in time to catch the Angels-Sox game in HD (no, I don't have MLB Extra Innings). As others have mentioned, darn channel keeps dropping off my Favorites list though. Is the only way to get all HD local games (mainly Dodgers/Angels) to upgrade to mpeg4? I have an hr10-250 now.

Yes, channel 95 is an MPEG-4 channel. Select Dodgers and Angel games as well as other Fox Sports games will be in HD on channel 95.

Was able to catch the UCLA-Utah game in HD on ch95 on my mpeg2 hr10-250 D* HD Tivo. According to some other threads, it's pretty much hit or miss if locally broadcasted games (e.g. on FSW or FSPT) will be on ch95 for all HD subs to see. Sounded like if shown on a local channel (e.g. ch9, ch11 or ch13, etc), most likely will be ch 95 will be blacked-out for SoCal subs. Please correct me if I'm wrong.
