Charter has finalized their merger with Time Warner Cable and Bright House Networks, effective May 18, 2016.

It will be a number of months before any changes to operations or services take place, and customers of pre-merger Charter, particularly in the Dallas area, should continue to call 888-438-2427, go to charter.com, or visit the Charter offices located in Boone, Hickory, Lenoir, Morganton, or Lincolnton for local service, as the Gastonia, Shelby, and Charlotte offices will not be able to fully assist these customers, due to differences in billing systems and set-top equipment.

This thread is for discussion of HDTV reception topics specific to Charter Communications systems served by the Hickory, NC headend, which serve the following areas:

Boone (Wautauga County)
Avery County
Mountain City, TN (serving portions of Carter and Johnson counties in the Tri-Cities DMA, but is part of the Hickory-Boone system cluster)
Burke County (the area outside the Morganton city limits)
Hickory (Alexander and Catawba counties, except for the Maiden area)
Lenoir (Caldwell County)
Lincolnton (Lincoln County and Maiden, Dallas, High Shoals, and surrounding areas of Gaston and Catawba counties)

The following HD channels are available and require a Charter digital cable box or device equipped with a Charter-supplied CableCARD (and also a tuning adapter, for some devices):

I am moving to the Hickory area and would like to know what boxes are available? My friend has a "Moxi" HD DVR box that has no HDMI and I'd like to get something more up to date. And does anyone understand or know why NBC-HD is not available on Charter?

(I'm OTA only, so I'm just sitting in the peanut gallery watching the fight.
)

I saw the same thing and find it difficult to believe a major cable company like Charter doesn't carry NBC in HD and now may lose NBC entirely. And I thought TWC in Charlotte a number of years ago was behind times.

#356 ·
Carriage agreement was reached - the main reason for the issue was largely due to Bello wanting more $$$ for coverage and forcing us to negotiate a collective contract for all our markets that carry Bello owned channels (Hickory, St. Louis, New Orleans)

I'm hoping this means we'll have HD back soon as well, but I've gotten no verification on that.

Speaking for pissing matches, apparently Viacom and TW are at it again - those two hit the news this morning.

Funny thing is, when they put their PR out, they say "amazing how cable companies are bulking at pennies per day"... what they don't say is that it's $0.02 to $0.05 per day, PER subscriber - reguardless of if they actually receive the channel or not. So we are talking MILLIONS per year - hardly pennies per day. and much of the recent bickering is that networks are now charging us more, yet pushing much of this content for free by either OTA, Internet or both.

yet these are the same media companies who cry that we don't want to pay for their content - yet they don't want to pay the actors or writers either (SAG strike, last year's strike etc etc)

it's all a big pissing match really... everyone wants more $$$ but no one wants to pay out more $$$.

Customers don't want to pay more to Cable and Dish, Cable and Dish don't want to pay more to Distributors and production groups, Production and Distribution doesn't want to pay more to Actors and Writers.

FYI -

It's finally happened, I've been re-assigned completely out of tech ops. As such I've got alot less access to some of the tricks I used to be able to do etc. I'll try to keep an eye out and post interesting news here from time to time

Well that just bites for your customers here. At least you'll still be there.

I'm getting both in Hickory. Funny aside, tech guy came out and informed me that "we are not allowed to have HD DVR boxes in our truck". Of course he was mistaken and after swapping out a moxi box he realized he was incorrect. He said Charter did not provide much in the way of training, I actually felt sorry for the guy.

I want to hook up an external HD to my Moxi box. I am told it will only work if the hard drive has a spindle speed of 7200 rpm. Since there are a ton of portable hard drives out there has anyone had success with a particular make and model? Only need about 160 GB or so.

Has anyone noticed whether Fox Sports Net is still available on QAM by Charter? I'm in Avery County and I know things can be as different as day and night up here, but we *had been* seeing Fox Sports Net (or Fox Sports Carolinas) on our QAM tuner. I'm not exactly sure when it changed. I know we used to see a color bar test pattern at the times when FSN was not on the air. Now, we don't even see that. I saw where the Duke-Boston College basketball game was supposed to be carried on FSN. But, it's not showing up at all on QAM. Is this just the way it is up here, or is anyone else experiencing this?

Here in Asheville/Buncombe County, I haven't been able to get FS Carolinas HD on QAM via Charter (at least since I bought my 2nd HDTV last month that has QAM Tuner). We've only been able to get the Big 4, G4, CSPAN2, INSP and the Music Choice channels.

No, FSN HD is no longer in the clear, as Charter has decided to re-encrypt the signal, at least in the Hickory region.

OK. Thanks for the answers guys. Anyone know what happened to take them out of the clear? As pathetic as it sounds, that cuts my hi def viewing in half. We were receiving two HD channels (both on QAM) and now that FSN is gone, it leaves us with only WBTV-HD. What a shame.

My folks live up in Denver NC. I'm helping them get two HDTVs. My dad called Charter and spoke with a CSR who said they have HDDVRs available. He drove up to the Lincolnton center to pick them up... the CSR said "we ain't got no HDDVRs" and continued to BS him and tried to sell him a regular DVR saying that her brother has one on his HDTV and you can't tell a difference.

What the hell is going on with Charter?

I'm sorry that the CSR misinformed your dad. Please ask him if he remembers who he spoke with in the office. If you can also PM me the info below I'll check the warehouse for availability.

DON'T let them do it! Charter has horrendous picture quality. The only stations that are acceptable are the HD stations of which there are few. Have them go with either dish or directv.

Charter internet access is ok though...

Hello Umatter2Charter,

Can you tell me what kind of progress Charter is making for getting Hi Def here in Avery County (Newland in particular)? All of the other places that Charter services in this area are receiving several HD channels. We get ONE HD channel that we pick up via QAM tuner. I'd really like to see something finally get going in this area. Is there any hope for me in this lifetime?

Thanks,

Johnny
