Not to derail the thread but what do they say Comcast is better at? PQ/AQ?

Any news for Ledyard/Mystic ? Or are we stuck with the 8 HD channels besides locals and premium (1 HBO etc).

We dont even have discovery channel HD, never mind anything else...

Have fun with a boatload of pixelation. From what I gather, Comcast and DirecTV have similar PQ, Dish is worse, and AT&T is at the bottom of the barrel. AT&T's SD is supposed to be second to none, but who cares, as SD is dead...

You could switch to cable internet... that's a lot faster than 2.5mbps... it's 6 even in the slowest of un-upgraded areas on Comcast. The middle ones are 8, and the fully upgraded areas are 12.

WNET only goes up through Madison, AFAIK. The Branford system is on part with DirecTV as of Wednesday. They could also have basic cable with Comcast, and then DirecTV, the only issue is that they would have to be using some sort of Clear QAM DVR on the Comcast side, since they wouldn't be able to get a cablecard with basic.

My neighbor dumped DirectTV based on invoice creep, lack of internet, lack of solid support, went to Comcast and has 20 mps Internet and a decent package with phone, tv. I am dumping AT+T/Preferred Basic TV for a Comcast 3play package on sale for 12 months which includes the Internet, Voice and HD Preferred.

I don't understand, though. My parents have VERY few HD channels.

ALL U-verse is pixelated in all areas?

It depends on area. Branford is about on par with D* and E*, while some areas still have a single digit number of channels. The worst is for people on the Groton system who aren't in Groton, since Comcast has less incentive to upgrade that plant, since Thames Valley is overbuilt in Groton proper.

Yup. It's not that the system is malfunctioning, it's just a side effect of compressing the HD so heavily to go through a VDSL line, and still have between 2 and 4 HD streams simultaneously. U-Verse is a pretty good way of delivering fast and cheap internet, and would be good for phone if landlines were still useful, but a pretty horrendous way of delivering video.

Yeah, besides the pay channels, they have VERY few...at least to me: 34.

Thanks for letting me know about U-verse. I guess they'll stick with Comcast.

Anyone on the eastern shoreline (New Haven to Clinton) area noticing a monsterous PQ difference from HD on the NBC affiliate vs. that of CBS and ABC? I was viewing last night at about 10:30 with all three showing HD programming and the difference was night and day, with CBS/ABC looking like mush, numbers and letters with shadows, etc. but NBC looking just plain terrific. The ABC/CBS signals would not even qualify as HD lite! Anyone know what is going on there?

Not from your area, but my brother recently needed to get a CableCard on the Plainville system. The new mandate lets him pick it up at the local Comcast store, but here's the rub.

According to them, to activate it for more than basic channels - say HBO - you need to have a truck roll for them to do the pairing. Needless to say he complained that it is pointless to let him self-install something that only halfway works, and they waived the truck roll fee.

Also, this was right at the beginning of the self-install period for CableCards, so perhaps it has improved since then.

What about D* or E*? I'm going to be moving to that area (moving out of home) this summer, if I'm in the Groton area itself, I'll probably get D*.

I'm pretty sure that is encoded by the affiliates and Comcast just re-modulates it with subchannels and all...

I think the government requires them to do self installs now...

Anyone know how to get Comcast to stop sending Mailers to add products to my services ?

They keep on sending me letters to upgrade to digital cable and show channels that I will get that they dont even carry in my area. (ledyard/Mystic area) The cable TV here is so bad, if I watch QAM, 1/2 the time I get digtal breakup on the picture so bad that it's almost unwatchable. With my cable modem, I'll be lucky if I have seen 1/4 of the speeds they advertised.

But, they still keep sending me crap to upgrade, How do I stop this ?

Isn't that FCC law now? If they wont give it to you and your willing to install it yourself, they can't charge you for a service call. Call the 800 number and tell them that they have to.

If U-Verse or ADSL is available in your area, switch to that and satellite, and immediately place any remaining mail from Comcast in the recycling bin upon receiving it.

Ahhh...That I didn't know. Thank you for explaining.

To answer the original question, my mom refuses to put a satellite dish on the front of the house. Unforunately, that's the direction that the house faces and my mom won't go for that at all.

Ah ok, I've got parents like that too, who don't have any appreciation for the beautiful industrial design of the DirecTV Phase 5.

Yeah. That kinda doesn't go along with a colonial house.

Even *I* have to admit it would look damn ugly.

The P5 dishes, when mounted and cabled neatly, are quite attractive. DirecTV took quite a bit of care on the industrial design so that people wouldn't detest "ugly" dishes. E*, otoh, did take quite a bit of care, but not as much as D*.

Don't move to Clinton. That nice list drops to 16, plus the HBO types of stuff. Really lousy here....and for same $ I'm sure.

A letter posted on the DPUC site here indicates that the digital conversion is finally starting in Clinton, beginning with some channels going all digital on Feb 28. Quoting:

"Digital Network Enhancements

Comcast is expanding its initiative to enhance its network to deliver the world of all-digital entertainment to Comcast customers within the Comcast/Clinton system. Comcast will be enhancing its network in order to allow Comcast customers to enjoy the benefits of digital technology. When completed, customers will have access to these exciting new features depending on their level of service:

Access to thousands of hours of programming On Demand;
More HD Channels;
And more entertainment options than ever before.

In order to bring customers these new features, all Comcast video services will be transmitted exclusively in digital format on or after June 12, 2012. This means that customers will need to have a digital set-top box or digital adapter from Comcast, or a third party device with a CableCARDTM for each television on which they wish to continue receiving Comcast video services...."

No mention is made in the letter of when new HD channels may be added.

Well on our system, they did the first couple of rounds of HD upgrades before killing analog, and then they did another round afterwards, but maybe they're doing Clinton all in one shot since it's so late in the game? I can't believe that people hang on that long and don't just switch to D*.

Yeah, they are not promising the same huge HD expansion as we got here on the Branford system, at least not yet. Our letter, back in August, mentioned "...Over 100 HD channels and 3,000 HD choices..."

Clinton's letter only says "More HD Channels".

I don't know what to make of that difference. I hope Clinton will end up with the same lineup that the rest of the state has. But they don't normally announce channel additions until a month before they are added. So I guess time will tell.

Finally, after many years of waiting, Comcast New Haven (Hamden, West Haven) systems have a dramatic increase in HD channels. Total of 112 available (including premiums) I believe.
