As far as I can tell, they're only putting out 2 HD channels per QAM channel. So they were never compressing the HD signal since HDs max out at 19megs and a QAM channel handles something just under 40megs.

What's the point of having Comcast HD? It freezes half the time during Celtics games! What's the issue here?

My mother just got an HD television yesterday and she only got the digital gateway instead of the digital with the variety and sport pack like I have. I was a little surprised to see how few HD channels she received with just the gateway so I have the following question:

What HD channels should you receive with expanded basic and just the Digital Gateway? Right now, for HD, it is only the network channels being received, no ESPN, ESPN2, TLC, HGTV, Food, Animal Planet, etc.

I would have expected that if there was a SD channel you received and there was an equivalent HD channel that you should receive it; such as the ones mentioned above. Since Cox always advertises free HD that makes sense to me, if I am paying for the SD channel I should get the HD channel as well.

Thanks.

You only get all the HD channels if your using there HD convertor, using the TV's QAM tuner you'll get the locals and maybe a few others, like MHD was on the "free"list while back

Thanks Bud-man.

I should have mentioned that she is using the Cox DCT6416 DVR. From memory I believe she is getting the following:

NBC,CBS,ABC,PBS,Fox,CW,MyTV9

and not getting the likes of ESPN, ESPN2, TNT, A&E, NESN, TBS, Discovery, TLC, Food, HGTV and other channels that she gets through expanded basicin standard definition.

Not sure why (even with only the digital gateway) you would get a SD channel and not the equivalent HD channel....kind of goes against free HD service. I can see not getting National Geographic and NFL Net because those are part of the digital sport package (in standard definition).

I think there is something wrong and am going to have her call on Monday, was just looking for some reassurance in my thinking.

Thanks.

uconnfan, like bud-man said, she should get all the HD channels except the movie channels, NFL, and NHL with the DVR box. I only have the gateway here in Cheshire and get everything except those above. I suggest she call Cox and have them make sure her subscription to the gateway is in their system. Sounds like something they can fix in a few minutes.

thanks budman and apaulct, I suspected something was amiss but like to be sure before I (or tell somebody to) argue that things aren't as they should be.

If cox gets Sci Fi HD and USA HD and I think I'm all set for a while as far as HD content....anyone have any info on when they might be added....maybe FX-HD as well.

Sounds like the box isn't activated, if you got a self install kit in the booklet theres a number you call and it will automatically set it up, no need to talk to anyone.

Bud-man, I did call and activated the box on Friday when she got it....the box reset itself and appeared to be working except she was not getting all the HD channels as I indicated. However, I stopped over today and the channels all seem to tune in fine. Thanks for the help.

raoul5788, I think that's where I got that in my head from, I thought I saw USA and SciFi in HD on DirectTV, don't know about Fx. I think if they added those three, everything I watch could potentially be in HD.

With limited basic and gateway digital, you only get the local broadcast. If you don't get ESPN in standard def, you won't get it in HD. If you don't get National Geographic in standard def, you won't get in in HD.

Yeah, I was getting some fairly regular and annoying pixelation Sunday night during the Pat's game too... enough to get me off the recliner and check my splitter to see if anything was loose. Glad to hear I'm not the only one though, makes me feel better thinking it's something transmission related and not a problem with my setup.

There was a problem with the feed. The cable guy said that they reseated a card in the office at halftime, then replaced it over night.

Digital simulcast is here in Suffield - noticeable improvement on the analog channels, and signal shows QAM 256. Thank you Cox!

Pardon my ignorance, but how would I know if I have digital simulcast with a DCT6416III? Does it display on the existing channel or does the digital signal go to a higher number channel?

It displays on the existing channel. Tune to an analog station, then on the remote, you hit and then
